    Since you are not always in the flat and you are paying for an extra room and bathroom you don’t even use. Paying over $6900 for 3 months and you aint even there is a lot. I think you should down size to a studio. Makes more sense. You will spend more time outside and use the library more like you said. Studio all the way.

Plus, I love the idea of spending more time outside and in the library! Your advice is super helpful, and I appreciate you taking the time to share it with me. Studio life might just be the way to go! 🏠✨

    Hey Vee,
    I think you should get a studio not only because it saves you a bit of money but also due to the fact that it will give peace of mind when you are traveling that you aren't "misusing or wasting" money on an apartment; which can take a lot of your headspace unnecessarily. On top of that, with the money that you do save by getting a studio you can look for a nice apartment that suits your needs in the uk for when you go back.

    • @Wati752
      @Wati752 10 дней назад

      May take a bit of adjusting, but I am confident you will make it work. All the best Vee❤️

      @veekativhu_  7 дней назад

      That’s such a great perspective! Saving money with a studio will definitely give me peace of mind while traveling. Plus, it’s true that not worrying about "wasting" money on an unused space can really free up mental headspace. Using the saved money to find a nice place in the UK when I go back is a brilliant idea too. Thanks so much for your advice! 😊✨

    The fact that you already toured a studio apartment & liked what u saw is a good enough reason to move into a studio. U can put yourself on the waitlist for a 1 bd if u want, and you’ll still get to save $800 during the summer whilst you’re in the UK.

    Hii Vee, here’s what I think would be kind of strategic:
    If you’re not going to be in the US for a while, sell what needs to be sold and put whatever is left in a storage unit for the 3 months. Then when you’re back, you can get a one bed room and not a studio (for your mental health I don’t think you should cook and sleep at the same place 😅). Hopefully you’ll be coming back with a family member who can help you move. Or have a moving party and invite friends to help you move to your new place.
    This is also all relative how much you'll spend on a storage unit vs rent, and how much you'll save between a studio vs one bedroom.
    Hope this helps ❤️

    • @veekativhu_
      @veekativhu_  7 дней назад +1

      Selling what I don't need and storing the rest sounds like a great plan. I totally get what you mean about not cooking and sleeping in the same space - definitely important for mental health. A moving party with friends sounds like so much fun! I'll definitely weigh the costs of storage vs. rent and see what makes the most sense. Thanks for your thoughtful input bestie! 💖

    Hi Vee, I watched your videos for sometime but never commented until now. I personally recommend you staying in the two bedroom apartment. The reasons being:
    1) Doing a PhD is very stressful. On top of that you are also working on other parts of your business at the same time. It’s worthwhile to come back to a place that’s spacious and homely. In a studio, you would be confined to a limited space and it would make you turn away from “home” to spend time in the library/outside in general
    2) Cost is a big factor to you as you mentioned in the video. But you work very hard to put yourself in the financial position to be able to afford the apartment in the first place. Your career and earning potential will only increase as you progress through life, so it could be worth spending more now to have a nice place to live especially if you’re financially capable of doing so.
    3) it’s also only for one more year so you should enjoy yourself in California with a homely place before moving back to the UK.

    • @veekativhu_
      @veekativhu_  7 дней назад +1

      Heyyy bestie!! Thank you for looking at it this way! I hadn’t fully considered how the extra space might help reduce stress and make it feel more like home, especially during my PhD journey. And you’re right, investing in a comfortable place now could be worth it. It’s a tough decision, but your perspective is super helpful. P.S thanks for the support and for watching my videos! 💖

    Hi! I personally think that, IF YOU CAN, and have the privilege/opportunity of choosing something more comfortable... why not? I understand your reasoning 100%, I love how real and relatable you are, so I see why you would think that. But slowly life showed me that choosing your comfort is okay. Also, idk how is it in the US, but in Sweden/Denmark the PhD "students" are WORKERS! So their lives are more comfortable, more mature, and more relatable to the age and time in their lives. As you say, you are 26, you do not have to keep sharing an apartment with random strangers, or cook and stink everything in a studio. I would choose to stay, you have a bunch on your shoulders to add a MOVE for ONLY one year. I understand it is a lot of money, and I would be questioning it myself... but if your lifestyle was affordable paying that rent.... maybe just FOR ONCE, treat yourself and stay. It is a waste to not use a toilet or a room, YES, but it is mental health for you. Of course, YOU know what is best for yourself, and you will make the best decision, think with your heart and not with your pocket. If this is a struggle financially, or you prefer using that money for something more needed, please go to the studio... wish you all the best! and can't wait to see more!

    My advice:
    1. Less rent (even for a year) can save you loads of money. Current 2300 (old rent)-1500 (approx. new rent)= 9000+ saved money a year.
    2. Before noticing the landowner, check out larger studios, go and make view-visits. Being there, try to imagine a dedicated spacious corner or area for filming and digital creation. Once you found something suitable (even if it costs more than 1500 or so, it’s still less than the current apartment) you can quit the current apartment. Don’t rush it in, just wait for a bigger/spacious studio to go sure you’ll be fine.
    3. If you get the feeling it overwhelms you, cancel plans and stay focused for the PhD.
    With love from Germany❤

    • @veekativhu_
      @veekativhu_  6 дней назад

      Those are some great points! Saving $9,000 a year is a huge bonus, and I love the idea of scouting for larger studios to ensure there's space for filming and creativity/my job. Taking the time to find the perfect spot sounds like a solid plan, and staying focused on my PhD is key. Thanks for the advice and support from Germany! 💖

    Hey Vee! I think you should stay in the 2 bedroom. That’s a tough situation, and it seems like you’re learning toward the studio…
    but as a PhD student having the extra space will be nice. And you kept mentioning cooking and knowing your bed is close to you. I think after awhile that’ll get old (me personally).
    Make that second bedroom your own personal library!
    I’m 25, turning 26 this fall and I loved I got a 2 bedroom. Yes I’m married and live with my husband, but we turned that extra bedroom into my own office because we almost got a one bedroom and I have no regrets!
    I’m getting my master’s and I too spend a lot of time on campus and at my apartment complex’s study rooms, but it’s so nice knowing I have the extra space if I need it, like if I’m sick and need to stay home etc, and still be separate from my bedroom, kitchen, etc because i do believe you need to have separate spaces when studying and relaxing.
    You mentioned money, but it sounds like that’s not the issue. You can afford your place and you work hard enough to stay there. I say stay in the two bedroom! I think in the longevity of things, and in your late 20s, 2 bedroom is the answer!
    You’ll make the right choice that comes to you though, regardless of what we all say : )

      Heyyy bestie, I really appreciate your perspective, especially since you're also a student. The idea of turning the second bedroom into a personal library sounds amazing!
      I do love the extra space and the separation it provides for different activities. Your experience with having an office space is super helpful. It's definitely something to think about for the long term.
      I'll definitely consider all these points before making a final decision. Thanks again for your advice! 😊

    Like so many have said, I think the studio sounds like it is the way to go! I get moving is a complete faff but really you will be 'moving' for 3 maybe 4 days and you could be sorted and settled in a new flat within a week. I know it can be truly hellish (especially on your own) but for the amount of money you will save (!!) a few days of faff is nothing. In a few months you will look back and it will all be done and you will be saving quite literally thousands of dollars. I would also think, what else could I/would I like to use that money for? It might add another dimension to consider.
    At the end of the day, you know what is right for you and you will make the best decision, there is no right or wrong! Good luck with you exams and trust your gut with whatever choice you make! Much love xo

    I agree with the comments saying you should definitely move. Also, I don’t think that you will feel trapped as you said, but rather feel even more free because less furniture and less stuff is easier to handle and your place will feel more spacious and free. I too live in a small 1 bd apartment and it’s more than enough for me while I’m in uni cause I’m spending all of my time in the library anyways. I lived in a studio for two years and didn’t mind it, it kind of went around the corner, so my bedroom felt separated for the kitchen, maybe you can find a similar layout? • @abbysmith7877
    @abbysmith7877 9 дней назад +2

    Not sure if this is something you'd be comfortable with or consider, but it's really common in a lot of college towns to sublet your apartment! Normally you see it if a person is going abroad for a semester/going home for an extended period of time for winter or summer breaks (like you are). It's nice because you don't have to shoulder the rent for those few months, and someone else is able to have transitional housing if they're waiting to move in for their own lease, will be only in a city for a given period, etc. The demand for subletting definitely differs city to city, but its an option if you're interested and can't otherwise find a one-bedroom/studio apt to move into (and even then, subletting for 2-3 months wouldn't be a bad idea to cover the rent for an otherwise empty apt).

    • @veekativhu_
      @veekativhu_  6 дней назад

      Hmmm this is not a bad bad idea at all! I do like it but I am not sure if I would do this. I would then need to consider making sure the home is empty or in a state that they can come and make it a home for themselves while I am away. At that point it would make sense for me to move out completely and downsize. But I do still think what you have suggested is a smart idea x

    You need to decide on your priorities to make the best choice and understand the realistic outcomes of each option.
    A studio could be a great choice if you want to save money. Think about how you’ll use those savings. Is it worth sacrificing a bit of space? Can you see yourself being comfortable enough in your new space?
    If you stay in the two-bedroom, consider if the higher cost is manageable. If it is, what benefits do you get from staying? Do you enjoy the extra space and comfort?
    Ultimately, how will each option impact your lifestyle and well-being? 😊

    You can either stay in the 2-bedroom apartment and try and find a roommate to help split the rent in half. Or if you really are leaning towards a studio apartment then go for it!
    If you aren't convinced of the separation of different spaces in a studio, you can also try looking for a studio that has a mezzanine (half second floor), so then you can have your like bedroom up there in the mezzanine and then your living space downstairs. Of course this depends on what is available near your location.

    You can put your stuff in storage for the 3 months you are in the UK, there are some that include packing, pick up and delivery to a new address! If the studio is big enough you can create little areas/sections so it doesn't feel like you are doing everything in one place! Start your new lease for when you get back or put yourself on the waiting list for a 1-bed 😊 you spend a lot of time traveling or studying elsewhere so I think in any case you'll be fine in a study. When you cook, put on the extraction fan, open a window down and get one of those odor absorbers, and a bed refresher spray type thing!

I can only speak for myself though. :) I don't know whether the next exists in the US, but there are sometimes classifieds published by people over here who want to move into e. g. a bigger appartment, and swap with another person who's living in their dream appt, and the other person basically moves into the smaller one. I don't know how to call it in English, as English is not my mothertongue. You of course would have to inform the landlord about the swap.

If you can find someone clean/trustworthy and it might give you time to wait until after summer/when you’re back to get a 1 bedroom. I am late on the comment train but I will say i moved after my first year in the PhD from a one bedroom to a spacious studio and I certainly felt the difference. It did, though, encourage me to study outside the apartment and to engage more with my cohort and just be out more which I think is a positive. If you know you're only going to be in America for one more year and then will have fellowship to do dissertative work in the UK I would say it is probably manageable. I would just really evaluate while you're at home how much stuff you have and what out of it all you're willing to part with. Also research storage solutions whilst you're preparing for a potential move so you know all your stuff fits. All that to say a studio sounds right but think through the implications of it !

    I’d say go for the studio, since you seem to be leaning towards that option. The alternative could be renting/subletting out the second bedroom in your apartment to another graduate student. That way you will have someone to consistently socialize with, and you’d still get that personal space separation from the main kitchen/living room area, + you’d pay less!

    I think the studio is a good option.. based on your use of your current apartment, the studio sounds like a better value, and could open up space for you in other ways such as financially, spending time outside etc. I know downsizing can be an emotional adjustment, but as you said you are drawn to this idea. Personally, I downsized to a smaller space so I could consistently attend dance classes and it's been totally worth it! If you did decide to move, it could be an opportunity to invest in something you want to experience more of and/or save :) Also: do you know the ventilation is like for cooking?

    Hey Vee,
    If you can’t move in July, sublet your apartment for the months you’re away or get a roommate to split the rent ($2.5K to ~$1.3K). Subletting is pretty common among students, especially in Germany, but check if this fits the US as well. This gives you more time to switch and perhaps find a student apartment that suits you better, without rushing or compromising.
    If moving to a studio, sell valuable items first to cover costs. Decide based on your capacity. Much love from Berlin Germany❤

    Sorry this is from my super random account but move into the studio!! Literally not even just saving over the summer, but over a full year you'll save around $10k and you're just not using all the space in the 2bd now anyway. It probably won't always be the most fun but with all the other spaces you have to study and work, with all the travelling, I think you'll be fine with the situation for just a year. Not worth it at all to stay in the 2bd and cooking mostly with an airfryer anyway makes it so much better because I do fully understanding just hating like the thought of cooking up whatever in a pan or oven and the oil splatter or oven steam is so close to your bed lol. but fr, maybe sometimes you'll miss living in a bigger space but its not even for a full year and makes 100x more financial sense.

    Someone mentioned getting a roommate and I think it’s a great idea! Having studied abroad, I enjoyed having roommates over the years to share my daily life with. And I am a shy introvert! So I think it’s mostly about finding someone that fits your vibe. Ideally close to your age and who has a similar lifestyle (like another grad student for example or a young professional). It would allow you to keep your space and have your own bathroom while also having a separate living room and kitchen, and to enjoy meal together once in a while. If I remember correctly the rooms are separated by the living space so that’s ideal to having your bubble in the evenings and at night. Anyway! I think you’d feel less crammed than in a studio, but a studio is a great option too. 😊

    If money wasn't an issue, I feel the extra space could be utilised well. I live in a studio apartment at 29 years old and due to there being no clear division between rest, work and relaxation, and my brain no longer being able to distinguish between night and day, I couldn't continue my education. I fall asleep at the worst of times, including when sipping coffee. I know I may be an exception due to health and disability but I do believe not having that clear division between rest, work and relaxation has implications for your health and productivity. However, in the current climate we have to consider the financial implications so I recommend looking at your finances. 1. Moving is a 1 week thing. So I'll suck for one week and youll be fine.
    2. If youre tryijg to integrate, then put yourself in a position that will allow you to integrate. Wither you move to a smaller apartment so that you go outside. Or stayvin the 2 bed and host more friends. But since you dont want people in your home and space, then option 1 is better.
    There's also an argument about what will happen when the time comes to leave America. Moving to a smaller apartment will help you jump start on getting rid of stuff that'll make the transatlantic move difficult.
    I love soft life personally, so i understand why its hard to leave a 2 bed apartment. But, now its upto you and your relationship with money and savings. Soft life is also in putting money aside if that's something you're interested in.

      @@veekativhu_that sucks :/ but find somewhere else. A studio can be claustrophobic especially with the kitchen next to the bedroom/living room.

    Get a 1 bedroom instead in a different location not a studio cos the point you raised for your clothes is important considering you travel a lot for speaking engagements

    Sounds like you really want the studio apartment, but ... I can't help but to think "roommate" especially when you mentioned the two bathrooms. Sounds like something that could work out. Unless your landlord wouldn't allow that or you prefer living alone. Just a thought. Otherwise sounds like you're gravitating more towards a studio apartment PLUS you've seen it so you know exactly what you're getting into.

      Hey bestie, I agree .. I like the idea of having a studio apartment and having a room mate wouldn't be a bad shout!! I have a lot to think about. Thank you!!
