This is the first time I've heard someone speak positively of the remake, and it makes me excited to eventually play my copy....once I finish the original again on Collection of Mana.
Absolutely disgraceful bullshit. Not only that it destroys balancing and makes everything worse, no even IF it was better (which it obviously isn't) it is so many other flaws, just one thing that's better doesn't compensate the hundreds of issues!
I played the original and I personally loved Sword of Mana as a remake. It is one of my favourite RPGs of all time. The music, story and overall feel of the game for me hit the spot. I also don't entirely understand some of the complaints about adding to the story and elongating the game. Isn't that the point of a remake? The original was great, but Sword of Mana took advantage of many things the GBA could do and added as much as they could into the game so players could spend more time in it. I play JRPGs for the story, exploration, and the expected repetitive grind half the time. I went into Sword of Mana expecting that and got more of it. So I understand people not liking change, but I thought the changes were for the better because it was what I wanted in the game.

After the video i went to amazon to purchase a physical copy but before hitting the purchase button i remembered that i already own it and its unopened in my shelf, well time to play this amazing trilogy
I have very fond memories of emulating Secret of Mana & the fan-translated Seiken Densetsu 3 as a kid, so this was a joy to watch. Thanks for putting in the time and effort creating it!
Thank you for these kind of videos, they're always handy and informative. I only played Mana on DS. But I've always wanted to try the originals, so glad to see them officially released on the West.
Wow! You were extremely comprehensive and unbiased. I really appreciate that you broke down the pros and cons of each one. Especially pointing out the hitstun in secret of mana. Thank you so much !!
Actually, I believe the Trials of Mana developers were stating that they didn't realize until well into development that there was a fan translation, and were surprised at what they called an overwhelming overseas response.
My personal favorite in the Mana series is Legend of Mana, and I really hope that it will eventually be made available on modern platforms, or possibly remade in the same beautiful style as Trials of Mana was. The new Trials of Mana should serve as a shining example to all developers of how you do a good remake.

I’d rather have multiple new versions of Square Enix’s old games, as I want everyone to have multiple options to play the game, rather than just an emulated port or pixel remaster. A port or pixel remaster with an arranged soundtrack is fine. Final Fantasy I-VI got a pixel remaster, but at least it got an arranged soundtrack with live band and orchestra. I’d like to see a future version of Final Fantasy I-VI with voice acting, and with either hi-resolution (4K) 2D graphics, HD-2D (Octopath style) graphics, or preferably full 3D Unreal Engine 5 graphics (while retaining turn-based combat), or maybe two or all of the above.
The best Versions for the first three Mana-games are for me Sword of Mana (the gba-remake of Final Fantasy Adventure, Mystic Quest whatever), the Snes-original of Secret of Mana and the Remake of Trials of Mana. Sword of Mana is more like the 16-bit Games of the Series. We had more text yes, but more Story with some very good scenes. The Battlesystem is the update of Trials of Mana. It doesn´t allow you to spam like in Secret of Mana, but you are not so helpless by using of magic, like Trials of Mana. Oh and there some other Scenes if you play the Girl. Secret of Mana for snes is still the perfect version on the original console and the Switch. You have a good 16-bit graphic with charme and the Soundtrack is awesome. Yeah you can spam the magic and the bosses are with good Training at the end very easy, but hey the other points are good. This point is only for me: the german Translation is so funny with some good refenreces of the german modern culture of the second half of the 20th century, thanks Claude Moyse. Trials of Mana the remake has the better battlesystem than the original, so sorry. I want to like the original, but it is for me to slow and by the using of magic you are helpless and lose the HP which you healed. By the graphic is the snes-version better. The Soundtrack is by both great!
Having never played the original Secret of Mana, I played the remake on the Vita. It was one of my least favorite Platinum trophy runs because of the frame rate dips. And the Vita was prone to crashes.
"The Legend" is and always has been my fave song from the Snes Secret of Mana, also its interesting you posted this, a really cute neighbor just literally GAVE me her copy of Secret of mana for the Snes cuz i lost mine! what a babe eh :P
Sword of Mana happens to be one of my favorite games. It's such an amazing re-imagining this simple story into a more deep and emotional journey. I love the aesthetics, the colors, the gloominess, and even the soundtrack uses the limitations of the GBA soundchip for the atmosphere nicely. It's really on par with Metroid: Zero Mission as far as great GBA remakes go.
I have my same Sword of Mana cart from when I was a kid (it's the only __ of Mana game I've played) I have no idea it was a reimagining of Final Fantasy The Adventure. I learned something today!
If only Secret of Mana Remake added the missing Glove Orb and missing Axe Orb to keep pace with the rest of the weapons/forging, I would’ve bought it 🙁
Trials of Mana better support 3-player online coop now that Switch Lite is out... imagine partying with friends when everyone has their own screen!!! :3
I'm a year late but I just played Trials of Mana all the way through. I played the Seiken Densetsu 3 pc emulator when I was in elementary school, around 2000 I think. I LOVED that game and played it several times throughout my life, the last time being when I was 23. Now I'm 31 and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed Trials of Mana. I turned off the voice acting (thank God they gave me the option) and I switched between the original soundtrack and the remake. Both good, but the original gets nostalgia points. While I loved the pixel art style of the original, I felt the new art style is reminiscent of the old styles feeling, and they captured the experience well. They did improve the leveling mechanics, and the fighting is more dressed up. Class changes mean a little more too, and the UI is smoother. All in all, I'd say both the original (emulator version) and the remake are very fun.
I am just getting the SNES version and why I didn't get the Mana Collection for Switch, is because I got the other ones... Like the GBA remake called Sword of Mana, and got Trials of Mana on Nintendo Switch... So you can say I have a good Mana Trilogy of games to play...
Wow thans for making this video! I didn’t know that there was een 3D version of Trials of Mana coming out. I love secret of mana and trials of mana. Can’t wait and I hope its also coming out on Steam someday
Very informative and well made. I did not know about various versions of this game. I still have to buy Adventures of Mana for the Vita. I cant wait to get the collection physically at the end of the month.
Seiken Densetsu 3 was and still is probably my favorite ARPG ever for it's story gameplay and coop mechanics Really lookin forward to the remake though I'd love it if they'd add online co-op somehow
Can’t wait to play Seiken Densetsu remake, one of my facourite games. And really hope that Square continues doing other remakes. I’d love to see a FF vi remake.
Took me over two decades to revisit and beat secret of mana. I felt an undeniable satisfaction. The switch collection of mana is optimal bc of the insta-save feature.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the text width fan hack of the SNES version of Secret. Part of what made the original translation of Secret so bad was that the amount of text was incredibly truncated. The fan hack gives the game a better font and an "updated translation" with much more detail and nuance than the original. However it's since been admitted that the so-called translation was straight made-up and just a rewritten version of the SNES translation with no actual basis on the Japanese version. I think for 99% of people it's not a very viable alternative because of that, but if (like me) you just can't stand how simplistic the SNES translation is, but also prefer the SNES graphics to the point you wouldn't enjoy the remake, it's worth at least a consideration.
For Adventures of Mana and Secret of Mana, the remake’s English translation is more faithful to the Japanese text than the one seen in Collection of Mana. Hence, if you want to read the dialogue as you play, the remake is the way to go. The characters work up a conversation when using an inn in the Secret or Mana. If Randi is alone in the inn at Gaia’s Navel, Luka can talk to him from afar.
There was a Japan-only 16-bit remaster of Adventures of Mana on mobile phones in the 2000s. The Android version of Secret of Mana also differs from the SNES original. Those versions could’ve been included in Collection of Mana.
I actually am a big defender of the steam ports of the final fantasy snes games, as they actually have the superior monster spritework which i really like, and i think the character sprites are not as bad as everyone makes them out to be.
I do have Secret of Mana on PS4. I did have fun playing it and will try to get more trophies, but I do have some issues with it. Do want a Switch and that collection
Secret of Mana wasn't re-released on Wii U VC, only Wii (though it's backwards compatible, of course). Maybe things were different in the Us or Japan though? But We didn't get it in Europe and were stuck with the 50Hz, slower version on Wii VC sadly.
I played secret of Mana on an snes emulator back in the day, and it wasn't very appealing to me. The battle system was nice but the art style remembered Chrono trigger too much so I just passed. Now with the 3D remake it looks fantastic I'll definitely try it.
My favorite GB game was FF Adventure. I was really excited to hear it was being remade for the GBA and rushed out to get it. I couldn't even recognize it. It was a good game. But it wasnt FFA.
@11:05-.-What are the odds that you would use the songs that was used in Homestuck as an example? (Good song btw, didn’t know it wasn’t original to Homestuck.)
That is a cool video. I bought SECRET OF MANA on PS4 a few months ago and I love it. You tell me, soon there will bei TRAILS OF MANA on PS4? All right I will buy it :)
i'm a huge fan of original secret of mana and from looks i definitly prefer the original one, but still wanna give the 3d remake a try and coming from the future, i definitly recommend the 3D remake of trials of mana, very well made! and since i haven't tried the first ones listed in this vid, i probably know what to do next :)
Another issue with the PS4 version of Secret of Mana is in coop mode. You can't shortcut magic but you can in single player only, that didn't make much sense to me.
Play everyone! :D Except for the Smartphone version. :/ But every game is really awesome. And the Collection of Mana makes it even much more better. I even enjoyed the Secret of Mana Remake, even with these crashes, but still, I liked it. Everyone should buy the Collection of Mana. For me personally I bought the japanese version 2 years ago physically and now the Collection of Mana in German or the german Retail version. One thing I don't like that much at the Mana Collection: If you are saving a file on the german version for example, you cannot use THIS certain Save file in other languages. And that's not so cool. But I am okay with that, because I like to play these guys all over again. :D Thanks for your video. ^^
I hope the remastered soundtrack in Trials of Mana winds up being as good as the original - Seiken Densetsu III is in the running for best music of any SNES game, and it has to compete with greats like Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger.
The biggest issue in the SOM remake is that you don't have the option to drop out/drop in any time in multiplayer. I also ask myself why they didn't at least add a mini map to the flying sequences. The gameplay itself is zoomed in too much and can get really confusing with the new perspective.
I feel like I'm the only one that still enjoyed the ps4 SoM....probably cause of my love and appreciation for the original....I did notice some things here and there like the removal of the cannon travel animation....strange how it became a "loading" screen....
Maybe there should be “Re-Collection of Mana”, which would include the three versions of Adventures of Mana (original GB version, Japanese mobile phone version, and 3D version), three versions of Secret of Mana (original SNES version, mobile phone version, and 3D version), and two versions of Trials of Mana (1995 SNES version and 2020 3D version).
i can't wait the 27 aout 2019 for the Nintendo switch physical version of this collection !!! big thanks for square enix and Nintendo teams for the translation of this magnificent collection !!!
None of the games in the switch collection have any bug fixes. Trials has a few big ones that are still there as well. Crits don't work, so dex is useless minus one character that uses it for some spells, shields don't do anything, etc.
I wish they did no polygon version of Secret of Mana because it could get the Breath of the Wild treatment. All the same kingdoms. Have Flammie only able to land in very select spots but have a massive map size without bounding in how the player can move. Considering Link to the Past vs Secret of Mana was a debate SNES players had at their launch it would be wonderful to see a game in this series get really epic exploration I stead of Trial of Manas very rudimentary and fenced in tiny areas (in an otherwise fantastic game)
i actually really like some of the remade sprites on the mobile version, especially the character sprites which feel like they resemble the character designs a lot better, too bad they’re trapped on the obligatory botched phone version of the game
Well now that I have 60+ hours in trials I fear I cant go and play the first remake without noticing the difference in polish too hard. trials has its shortcomings sure, the worst being the lax difficulty on hard. But man they did it right this time!
i finished the android version of secret of mana. in your video it seems the flammie landing has a low framerate and on my galaxy s6+ it was perfectly smooth. also i noted you spoke of having a controller but the game works great with the thumb. the shortcut you can prepare on the top right of the screen make the battles smoother than in the original. i really don't see how I could prefer the super nes version which is less good graphically (unless i use some action replay code to break the game).
Well, I played Secret of mana on my android phone... The control is fine , but something party AI got stuck sometimes Boss fight is frustrating , you don't know about magic spell It takes me 24 hours to finish the game But, ending😢 got me
You disregarded the biggest change to secret of mana's remake. The magic system. It's actually worthwhile now to cast spells on non-boss enemies and level up your magic without inn grinding. It was inncredibly rewarding casting stat ups and downs during regular encounters to level your magic and then restoring your MP from leveling up.
This feature alone makes the remake better than the original. I grew up with the original, renting it every weekend from a game store until we got super lucky and found it for cheap at a pawn shop. A lot of childhood memories with it. But I'd still rather play the remake now, much as I prefer the aesthetics of the original. The gameplay improvements were just too huge to ignore.
Appreciate this feedback and the anecdote. I pinned this for now so people can see. This is def something I've overlooked & this kinda thing is why I wanna give Trials of Mana more focus in a future video; so these mechanic overhauls don't go over my head
Too bad it costs 40 dollars.💸
I have big problems with the voice acting and the art direction of the remake. It feels like they rushed through some critical design points.

I hope it does well, so they consider remaking Legend of Mana, & actually making a new game in the series
I dabbled with the Mana games, but I am pre-order excited for Trials of Mana. That's rare for me, especially for a moderately mid-to-low profile game!

Finally someone properly pronounces Mana
i love the opening music of your video brings back so much memory 😌😌😌😌
There was a Japan-only 16-bit remaster of Adventures of Mana on mobile phones in the 2000s. The Android version of Secret of Mana also differs from the SNES original. Those versions could’ve been included in Collection of Mana.
I played the fan translation of trials of mana. I really liked the game. It was fun.
Playing Adventure of Mana on my PC via Bluestacks is a great way to play it :)
I want Terranigma and Secret of Evermore on the Switch!
There was also a phone remake of Seiken Densetsu released in the mid 2000s that looked like a 16 bit game
Do want a Switch and that collection
i have secret of mana on ps4. i bought it because of legend of mana. i love that game!
Secret of Mana wasn't re-released on Wii U VC, only Wii (though it's backwards compatible, of course).
Maybe things were different in the Us or Japan though? But We didn't get it in Europe and were stuck with the 50Hz, slower version on Wii VC sadly.
Sword of Mana deserves so much more love.
All right I will buy it :)
i'm a huge fan of original secret of mana and from looks i definitly prefer the original one, but still wanna give the 3d remake a try
and coming from the future, i definitly recommend the 3D remake of trials of mana, very well made!
and since i haven't tried the first ones listed in this vid, i probably know what to do next :)
I know it's a minor point, but Seiken is pronounced "say ken," not "sigh ken."
awesome, super-detailed video. very much appreciated.
Another issue with the PS4 version of Secret of Mana is in coop mode. You can't shortcut magic but you can in single player only, that didn't make much sense to me.
everybody hyping over the FFVII remake while I'm hyping more over the trials of mana remake
Same here!
Both but FF7 Will over shadow Trials
@@RIELSG Maybe so, but I still prefer Trials anyway.
Thanks for your video. ^^
There's also a feature phone remake of Seiken Densetsu 1 only released in Japan
I hope the remastered soundtrack in Trials of Mana winds up being as good as the original - Seiken Densetsu III is in the running for best music of any SNES game, and it has to compete with greats like Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger.
I didn't know Trials of Mana was Seiken Densetsu 3, I think I still have a fan-translated Seiken Densetsu 3 rom somewhere in my PC or my backup disks
Fantastic video Austin, thank you!
I hope they'll do this for Final Fantasy 1-6 next as well as the Chrono Series.
Sword of Mana before the Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest or the remake Adventures of Mana.
I love these vids.Thank you so much for making these videos Ik they they are hard to do.
The biggest issue in the SOM remake is that you don't have the option to drop out/drop in any time in multiplayer. I also ask myself why they didn't at least add a mini map to the flying sequences. The gameplay itself is zoomed in too much and can get really confusing with the new perspective.
Collection of Mana switch ftw.
That new Trials of Mana is gonna set the gold standard for how old JRPGs should be remade. Can you imagine if Final Fantasy 1 to 6 got that treatment?
I feel like I'm the only one that still enjoyed the ps4 SoM....probably cause of my love and appreciation for the original....I did notice some things here and there like the removal of the cannon travel animation....strange how it became a "loading" screen....
Maybe there should be “Re-Collection of Mana”, which would include the three versions of Adventures of Mana (original GB version, Japanese mobile phone version, and 3D version), three versions of Secret of Mana (original SNES version, mobile phone version, and 3D version), and two versions of Trials of Mana (1995 SNES version and 2020 3D version).
I love these kind of videos :)
You metioned the main FF games weren't in Europe before FF7, but I remember seeing advertisements fot the FF snes games in the early 90's Netherlands.
I am surprised you never mentioned Legend of Mana for the PS1.
The English translation of the remakes of Adventures of Mana and Secret of Mana are more faithful to the Japanese text than the originals.
Thank you for the video!
I love secret of mana
i can't wait the 27 aout 2019 for the Nintendo switch physical version of this collection !!! big thanks for square enix and Nintendo teams for the translation of this magnificent collection !!!
Do you know if they fixed the defense to 0 bug in the Switch Mana collecion? thanks
Some sprites are also very TOM like the Rabites.
Well now that I have 60+ hours in trials I fear I cant go and play the first remake without noticing the difference in polish too hard. trials has its shortcomings sure, the worst being the lax difficulty on hard. But man they did it right this time!
Any news on the trials of mana comparison?
it's so sad, how they rushed the SoM Remake...
i finished the android version of secret of mana. in your video it seems the flammie landing has a low framerate and on my galaxy s6+ it was perfectly smooth. also i noted you spoke of having a controller but the game works great with the thumb. the shortcut you can prepare on the top right of the screen make the battles smoother than in the original. i really don't see how I could prefer the super nes version which is less good graphically (unless i use some action replay code to break the game).
Well, I played Secret of mana on my android phone...
The control is fine , but something party AI got stuck sometimes
Boss fight is frustrating , you don't know about magic spell
It takes me 24 hours to finish the game
But, ending😢 got me
I just got the collection of mana for switch
Helpful. Thank you.
It would be nice to have secret of mana remakes & adventures of mana remastered collection (ps vita versions) on the the Nintendo Switch
I bought the Secret of Mana remake and I regret it. I think I will pass on re-imaginings for a while.
I actually like the remake. Of course the original has its charm, but the SOM remake was good too. I dont understand the hate for it.
