    Ordered one of those gp30’s in the rio grande billboard scheme today. Excited for my first scale trains locomotive. Really need to sit down and detail out all my KATO and atlas units.

    The update, you sure got a lot done. Yes wiring can be a royal pain, I like to take my time doing it and marking so when I have an issue I can very quickly fix it. The helix, never saw anyone build one out of foam board, so a lesson learned. On doing scenery, I prefer to do one level at a time... finish it and move on to the other. Just a thought, I have 2 roll around carts to hold my scenery stuff, one has a power strip so I can plug in tools I need. Like a portable work bench for larger layouts. Saves a lot of steps.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  7 дней назад +1

      the roll around carts are a fantastic idea. i've had casters sitting in my tool box for months since the rebuild and i was going to make some mobile work carts from them. then i was sidetracked, the weather turned, and now it's a spring thing. i was going to use some nice paint-grade plywood for the top, and then build it to fit some plastic shelving units (because I'm entirely too uninterested to build drawers myself!). it's a solid idea and A LOT better than throwing everything on the layout like i'm doing - runs the risk of breakin' stuff.

    I do not have a problem with any of the 4 on your list. My worst locos are all from Bachmann. Either their decoders die (F-7) or their drives do not stay on the track (SD-45's and Sd-9)

    Hi C Mastracci , great update you have been busy. I know you have been busy with the lower level, but I didn’t know you were working on the upper level also. You’re right the helix does look like crap but it works. I’m not planning for an upper level at this time but who knows what the future holds. I’ve got my GP30’s and I’m working on getting them broken in. These units are going to fit right in. Planning on using them in yard work and on the branch line. Pulling my old Southern Rwy passenger train from Micro Trains. I went out on a limb and got all the Southern units. I had to cancel a locomotive order from another company. Just to much at one time. L O L . Be looking forward to your review on the GP30’s. One more thing , which micro trains couplers do you prefer short shanks or medium shanks. Thanks for the update. Have a good weekend. 😎😎 👍

      I laughed when I built it... like, who is going to take this seriously - i don't even take this seriously. BUT, it's stable and it's strong and the trains like it so... if it ain't broke, I'm sure not interested in fixing it. maybe some day i will, if my OCD wins. but as a proof of concept - foam board is an excellent helix material! My GP 30s just arrived - not even out of the box yet. They look awesome so I'm hoping for good things when they hit the layout!

    Nice update. I was wondering if you need to modify #4 Kato turnouts? I’m thinking of using Kato unitrak on the lower level of my layout.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  7 дней назад +1

      There are a lot of folks complaining online about the #4s. There is nothing wrong with them provided they're installed correctly - which is usually just making sure there's a small piece of straight track directly in front of the points. you can have them directly on a curve if you're doing slow speed operations. I don't modify them in any way - but be sure to keep scenery material out of the workings or it's a monster to fix.

      @@AlleghenyNorthern I agree. #4's have the exact same same geometry as Atlas #4s. My 6 axel diesels, T1 Duplex and Y6B all navigated them without issues

    Can you share where you got all the scale construction vehicles?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  4 дня назад

      Very common question actually. It's a mix of metal kits from GHQ and Showcase Miniatures as well. Most of them, however, are 3D printed from the former Shapeways website. The balance are Japanese imports from Tomia/Tomyytec.

  • @BlackMan614
    @BlackMan614 7 дней назад +1

    I personally don't see the desire/need for a helix. Considering in N scale you only need a few feet to get proper elevation for a cross over @2% grade.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  7 дней назад +1

      Might want to run that math again. a 2' rise over 10' run is a 20% grade. If you want to go double deck, you're going to need a very long run which you can do, provided you have the room. The helix gives you a compressed area for the additional run BUT it introduces curves which is a physics problem putting lateral forces on the train as it climbs. So it's the easiest way to get from deck 1 to 2 - but if you can fit it all in one deck, then that's all the better.

    • @BlackMan614
      @BlackMan614 7 дней назад +1

      @@AlleghenyNorthern 2 foot rise?? Why do you need that? I'm talking TWO INCHES.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  6 дней назад +1

      @@BlackMan614 you couldn't build a second deck at 2". a simple over/under like a basic figure 8 could go up 2". but to have a multi-level layout you need between 18-24" between decks.
