    The giant pandas are no longer an endangered species in china because the population had surpassed that & since it takes so long for the S'pore panda to breed, it would be a good idea to negotiate with china to extend to 4 yrs for the 'little one' to return to china.

    • @lumlee1
      @lumlee1 2 года назад +6

      I second about negotiating with China, but I beg to differ on returning to China. It's selfish of China to ask S'pore to take care of it and to return to them when it's Singapore effort to raise it up to an adult by then.

      The reasons are because panda is to the Chinese, a national treasure and the number is still very small in the wild. Therefore, Chinese conservation effort for panda has never stopped and continue in the hope that one day, wild panda population will one day expand to such a number that it will not need much conservation effort by human because the number is large enough whereby no more in danger of extinction.

      The status of Giant Panda is under "Vulnerable", therefore it is not out of the woods yet, the number has to increase further to reach "Near Threatened" and eventually reaching to "Least Concern".
      Next is Giant Panda does not breed as well as other animal in the wild, the mother usually only take care of one cub in every pregnancy and in her lifetime, she could go through about seven pregnancies, probably less. Lastly how many of the cubs will actually reach adulthood and start to breed for the next generation?
      Not many, based on the the numbers of the last two surveys. The third survey from 1999-2003, there were 1596 pandas excluding young cubs. The fourth survey from 2010-2013, Giant Panda increase to 1,864 excluding young cubs, an increase of only 268 in ten years.
      An increase of only 268 in ten years, even after the Chinese has given all the protection they could, for example Giant Panda has been given the highest status of protection, by setting up protected nature reserves and forest rangers to patrol those reserves to ensure that wildlife there are protected.
      2ndly, Giant Panda are susceptible due to their main food source, which is bamboo. In the 80s, there were many bamboo forests in Sichuan started to flower and die, causing a lot of hungry Giant pandas to die of starvation. From more than 2,000 to just above 1,000 wild Giant Pandas after that. And many of today captive pandas are actually the descendants of some of the rescued Giant Pandas.
