    Hi Dave, I'm a former Vietnam Vet from the state of Connecticut, USA. I was a radar repairman and avionics tech, so i worked with vacuum tube and early transistors. I enjoy all your videos and love all the different types of radios. You have repaired some beautiful radios. Please keep up the fine work. Continued success, Paul McCarthy

    Really interesting set with the dial lights and capacitor bank. Bush always like to put the components in a row on phenolic tag strips which makes that aspect of servicing them easier. But they're always constructed in a way that makes rewiring or stripping down the chassis quite a challenge. Great camera work and editing Dave, makes watching far more enjoyable. Looking forward to the next episode.

    Great vid! As a valve radio collector and repairer for over 40 years the first radio I had was a Marconi set that had a notorious 'PITCH' wound power transformer (30s) that bellowed smoke when powered up... 😗 It also had about 10 taps off it! A complete NIGHTMARE to recreate !! Now has pride of place as I was 14 at the time! It also relied on a 20 metre run of aerial ! (back garden😗 - along the washing line 👀😀) It used light bulbs 👀😀🤣 PEN valves et that were HUGE! It also suffers from major drift on the tuning / reception of stations et 👀 It also has POWERED speaker system with high voltage to coils on the speaker assembly et😗 I'm surprised that your Bush radio is circa 1936?? The power with the separate rechargeable accumulator (motor garages et exchangeable) and the build et is more early 1950s ? 🤔Bush were notorious for using those notorious green dropper resistors turning the live chassis into death traps.. NOT that they were alone re that power option, Phillips / Philco et were also guilty of those cheap and nasty builds? 1940s were mostly the 'war limited resources valve radio sets.' many of which ended up on the fire or scrap heap. 👀 I worked with mates of mine who were in a band, servicing their Mullard valve amp units et A good wholesome SQUEAL from them re the talents of a decent lead guitarist.. 👀😀 Growing up on a farm in Cornwall (UK) I serviced the cow shed AMERICAN radio that had powered tuning with sub miniature valves et (Apparently the milk yield went up if the cows listened to music 😗🤣🤣) You mention the quality of sound et but we must remember that a loudspeaker (probably 3 ohm - not alternative 15 ohm ) would not sound that good out of the wood cabinet as the wood would help re resonance / depth / warmth of sound et 😗 The loudspeaker OUTPUT transformers on early sets were also prone to short circuits / blow outs et Anyways thanks for sharing a great vid and STAY safe!

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 года назад

      Hi Arthur, thank you. I have had pitch transformers too but found someone too rebuild them, saved a lot of dirty work. The radio is from 1936, there was a mains powered one with the same case, I think it had a transformer in it. I have a number of UK sets with the green dropper resistor and I also restored a cow shed radio used to serenade the cows. Thanks Arthur, stay safe 🙂

    Great episode-one of the most fascinating. Love it when you start with a radio that looks like death warmed over. I know the final result will be terrific, and wasn't disappointed with this one. Especially liked the PCB testing and your rebuilding the capacitor cans. Incidentally, did your wife approve the use of that nice frying pan for opening old electronic components? That lighted dial looks like it came out of one of my all-time favorite movies, Metropolis! It's interesting to see how radio designers solved their technical problems back then. When you video radio restore after restore you never know which one will strike a chord with the viewer. This one hit me. This is such excellent work, while it might seem to be a mundane restore, without any fanfare or drama, it displays all kinds of skill. I can't wait for the next part, your woodworking and case finishing are certainly on-par with your electronics skills. Beautiful job, you took all the right turns and did all the right things here.

    It always makes my day to see a video from you. Your adventure with the capacitor banks was personally very nostalgic. One of the first radios I tried to restore was a Bosch 5AC. It had a box with 5 capacitors in it. They were in a box filled with potting compound. I used a propane torch to melt the compound letting it drip into a jar. The smoke was horrendous but I had the foresight to do this in my driveway. Used a perforated board to mount the new capacitors. To bad it was wasted effort. The power transformer was burned out.

    First, the good news. A truly interesting radio! Hard to believe the alignment was so close after all the component changing. Back to factory spec maybe? The not so good news is I fear you've lost your amateur status, Dave! Far fewer are the "I think this ... ," "my guess is ..." and the "uh oh's" of your early videos! 😂

    In spite of the lemon freshness, this has got to be one of your most difficult restorations. I am so glad that the doctor cleared you for some things which you were not able to do before. I had a triple bi-pass about a year and a half ago and I couldn't do anything for three months until my sternum grew together again. No Hoover to vacuum. No cleaning the bathroom. No scrubbing the kitchen floor. ("David, we're having guests over tonight for dinner, so you don't have to cook sausages on the barbie. Have you seen one of my wine glasses? It better not be in your workshop." Hee, hee!)

    Your mention of crop circles reminds me of the time my double cousin and I made the first reported crop circles in North Dakota back in 1957. Being double cousins means mom and her mom were sisters dad and her dad brothers. At any rate our fathers liked the whiskey a bit too much and when they got together, both being farmers the neighbors were targets of their conversations. This day, they were angry at the neighbor who owned the land across the fence from my Uncles farmstead. After listening to their list of transgressions against the farmer, my cousin 8 and I 7 years of age went outdoors, we walked across the road and climbed the fence into the ripe wheat field which was on a slight rise in the prairie, we went to the top of the rise and lay down in the wheat then began rolling down the hill. WE rolled and maneuvered so we made circles and squares, all sort of patterns in the wheat knocking down the crop and getting even for the terrible things this man did to our fathers. Later we learned most of it was fueled by the drink and not by his actions, but we proudly watched from afar as the farmer checked his crop. Then, my cousin informed me other farmers in the area, including our dads examined the knocked down crop and tried to figure out what could have made the patterns. We never did tell our fathers, but I wrote of it once and my cousin, who I have not seen in perhaps 30 years now called me laughing at our youthful indecision.

    Really good to see you David . Hope you are feeling well and treatment not too bad .
    I really like battery sets . Not quite sure why but they seem to have a charm of their own . I have a few original PSUs that I have restored so no problem powering them . Here in the UK they bring less money than the mains sets . They tend to work surprisingly well when restored . Not keen on the 50s mains/battery models though . Often cheaply made with very underated power supplies with filament volts derived from the B+ via resistors .
    Keep well David and enjoy your hobby . Regards from Thomas

      @DavidTipton101  2 года назад

      Hi Thomas, I'm good thanks. I steer away from battery sets but I will build a universal battery eliminator soon and will do a few more, they don't sell well like you say. I have done at least one AC/battery set but didn't operate it with a battery but I remember the resistor for the filament supply. I'm glad I did this one. Thanks Thomas 🙂

    Hi DAVE! I was up late and just checked your feed. I was happy to see a new video! I am surprised you were able to hold back and not paint the chassis. Using the pan to cook sausages later... you sound like a blacksmith. Just throw the metal in the fire and Shell be right LOL It sure is nice to have a soldering iron big enough to do the job! :D 80+ year old pots are kind of hard to get, the replacement will be fine. Heck the rest of the resistors don't quite match what used to be installed, it will be fine! I do love the tuning dial. I can't wait until the follow up video. Stay well my friend :D
