my mother grew up in Stuttgart and Neckarsulm during these years. said many times they would hear the prototypes coming down the road as they had a unique sound. many times they would stop in the area for a meal . always had people interested in the vehicles.

Interesting movie, newer seen it before. I have a -58 convertible bought in the eighties as a daily driver. As i dont use it anymore i planned to rebuild it as a replica of a V2 convertible so these pictures are really valuable. Nice with swedish music too :-)

Zarah Leander sings „Das gibts nur einmal, das kommt nicht wieder“ Music from Werner Richard Heymann. The german Version is sung by Lilian Harvey in the Film „ der Kongress tanzt“from. 1932!

@@jerrygomezjr601 Thanks for your comment! In fact its not an all original -58. Back in the eighties i wanted a more modern car so i replaced the 30 hp engine and gearbox with a 34hp engine and all syncronized gearbox. Newer rear lights as the original semaphore turn indicators are rather dangerous in modern traffic. My regular car broke down in october so i have used it as a daily driver during the winter. Its cold ,noisy high gas consumtion -But- reliably. Only one day when it was minus 20 C the starter motor refused to kick in. But a friend who pulled a rusty 1950 model to the junk jard gave me the crank an corresponding nut from that car and with at little gas right down in the carburettor and with a few turns on the crank to fill up the cylinders and after that the ignition on it usually hits om first attempt :-)

@@bennyhannover9361 Thank you for your interesting answer! Zarah Leander was actually from my home town . She had a career i Germany before the war and sang in both Swedish and German. I saw her singing back in the seventies, she had an amazing voice.

The volkswagen has an engine quite different in layout and power/ displacement. Different enough to give each their due because you must accept how primitive driving conditions were. Germany had DKW also known for good engineering in the forward position in the vehicle. I'd like to learn more about the NSU that had some VW styling que's.

Actually, a lot of the Beetles technic was "inspired" by the Czech Tatra.
The Beetle was a very modern and spacious car for the money at this time.

@@krollpeterif that is true, and it's up for debate, there was a German designer working at Tatra so it wasn't Czech.

Ledwinka was a Sudetendeutschen as weil as Porsche both have been prosecuted after WW2 .The first one by the czech communists because he didnt cooperate. Porsche was arrested by the french allied forces because he was accused of being a nazi. Then he helped Fine tuning the Renault 4CV and his son paid to the legal authorities a Kaution of 1 Million Francs

I drove a friend's 1948 Tatra T87- It was like the Volkswagen from hell! You could sure feel the weight of that rear-engined V8 on curves pulling you in odd directions. My friend also owned a pre-war right hand drive T77 limousine that was difficult to drive as he could not turn corners on city streets easily as the turning radius was so large. He said it was one of 3 left in the world and maybe the only one on the road.

"Porsh eh" is probably more correct. It's a German surname and the E is pronounced. Having said that no English speaker pronounces Volkswagen as "folks vahgen" (people's car) which is the correct German pronounciation. It's a bit like the British pronounciation of Jaguar "jag yu ah" versus the American "jag wah"

@@michaelhalsall5684 It's interesting how the Brits pronounce certain words. A friend in the U.K, a train buff calls the Canadian train builder bom bar dear like a guy in an airplane. I told him it's bom bar dee ay because that was how the man who started the company pronounced his name. Armond Bombardier, a Quebecer. My friend didn't really want to hear it but he says it that way now.
