For all those wondering.. the reason why he can pull this off so often isn’t just because he’s athletically capable but because he times his runs properly. I’m sure many players attempt it but don’t pull it off as often. Also he reads the space and occasionally pulls the defender in or out.

the defender moves to body check and close him out, but ronaldo goes a different way than the ball goes so by the time the defender is going to tackle the ball and not the man (going off ronaldo's body language), the ball is already past him and then the defender tries to go for the ball, not realising that ronaldo is passing him also. It essentially emphasises the issue with defending the man rather than the ball. When the ball goes a different way from the man, you are left with the hard decision of committing a foul, or being torn and just give up

It is not only effective but smart.
One of the reasons he does this is when you are a pacey player, defenders clip & foul you (often delibrately) as you touch it past them but go the same side of ball.
By going around the opposite side this reduces these foul injuries.
My dad was pacey & he did this & taught me this. I must have followed in his genetics and pace running work rate, being pretty quick, so I used this and thankfully it worked and reduced injuries, but as I found out the achilles aimers still get you!

I can’t believe someone finally made this video, I’ve always tried to explain this to people in the messi v ronaldo SHIT.
People always say messi is better because he dribbles through n past players with the ball at his feet, so it just looks amazing, but what’s the difference when ronaldo has the speed to just kick it around them then recollect the ball. He’s still beaten the same defenders, he just does it differently.
Oh also my other favourite is “messi has better vision/creative play”
Meanwhile he played in Barca with the literal Spanish WC midfield, n ronaldo was working off a normal club out together midfield (still world class of course)
But messi had one of the greatest international midfields ever in football history to work with. But people go MESSI HAS WAY BETTER VISION, like ffs, look who he’s playing on the end of appose to ronaldo. It’s a joke. Messi has every advantage, insecure men love him because he’s small n ugly, a lot of fans just don’t like ronaldo because he’s tall n handsome, Barca easily has the most bogus 💰 reltionship with fifa n reffs I’ve ever witnessed in the last 20 years of CL history, Real Madrid have the complete opposite. Literally.
Messi was at a club where they always had the best striker in the world and the best midfield in modern history. Meanwhile ronaldo is trying to set up benzema n higuian, n the best he got was when he had ozil setting him up. N still u can barely seperate them. But look at the dynamic n quality of shit going on around them. Prime Barca was still the best side in the world without messi, prime Real Madrid was severely handicapped when ronaldo was out.
Those r the key differences, not comparing there head to head skills

"MESSI HAS WAY BETTER VISION"... People(actually FOOTBALL PLAYERS) said that due to his passing ability and and how he's able to find and create spaces(unlike the self-passing, cliche "dribble")...you negate that with great midfielders around him....what kind of argument is that????
And you wanna talk about Messi's teammates??? Yeah, nice you have no idea of why Ronaldo was called a TAP-INs merchant even by the players...how he got feed by his teammates and how Man U were losing despite him scoring goals.

What’s different is that he doesn’t simply pass to himself. Firstly he always passes on one side and runs past on the other. The defender is on the ball, not Cristiano, so he’s focused on it while Ronaldo can use his superior pace and the advantage of not needing to turn to get ahead. He also does something risky which is approaching the defender with the ball. If he’s too far away he’ll never reach it in time without committing a foul. Additionally his passes are short because that’s what allows him to get to the ball before any other defenders who might make up for the other who got dribbled past. Finally his passes always go in a straight line facing him which means he just has to rush to the ball without changing angle. It’s truly masterful, what a player
