I like fixing all the little easy things first. It keeps me from getting overwhelmed. It's looking great.
Truth right there. So cool to bang out a little project in about 15 minutes that results in a noticeable difference. I replaced my reverse / neutral safety switch last night. Took about 10 minutes, but I can now see behind me! Awesome!
I like all the little projects that don’t break the bank. Something as simple as LED is a great project that I’m definitely going to do
dude, for reals! I replaced the speakers and all the LEDS for like $100!! ha ha
your videos are awesome sir, it remindes me with my suburban i used to have, keep up the good work, and i wish chevrolet look back at their roots and make real simple trucks again .
One can hope but with the new direction of the “blazer” I kinda doubt it.
Love my 90 suburban but there isn't many videos like this on people's actual builds. I really hope this becomes another series on your Facebook and RUclips channel.
As soon as budget and space allow it!! Trust me I can’t wait.
I'm so glad you picked up a shoe box chevy burban... I talked my wife into giving me one for my birthday a few years ago... And then we got a donor dodge ram with a 12 valve and an nv5600.... I'm still collecting bits that are needed to do the swap in the driveway... I've designed my suspension based on your k5 before the links. Can't beat these for a family limo. Lol kids dogs and gear, all in one tank that can plow through a prius and still keep driving. Love your channel, keep it rolling.
Oh and I have a set of axles if you want a set... Dana70 rear, dana 60 balljoint front with the CAD. I decided to use the axles from our donor instead.
you just described exactly why I am building this lol. Everything in one truck, with AC, and a dog. Prius watch out!
Lol. I’m working on my dash right now. I am swapping to a dash with a tach because I have the sm465, and 80 mph speedo. My old dash was cut by the PO to put in a cheapo tach in the blank spot in the cluster.
These trucks are great in the junkyards too. Reasonably good amount of them. Seatbelts are a good buy as well if you need them (I did). Cool stuff. Will stay tuned!
yea, unfortunately the pickings are getting slimmer and slimmer. I have a bad habit of cruising junkyards when I drive by one ha ha
Not a Chevy Owner...But I'm a Subarban Fan....Nice info....thanks for saving these Dinosaurs....
Damn, I can’t wait for the Burb transformation. I know nothing is ever done, but I want to see this diesel and towing!
me too, but I am loving driving it right now. The motor and trans are so smooth. The guy who owned it for its lifetime took really good care of it.
I would like to see what modifications you make to the factory headlights, if you are planning any. Also, the cross over steering but I assume that you would video that. Thanks!
they are on my list, but they are pretty great already. The relay mod is a pretty standard and simple modification that just makes sense. It is the one area on these trucks (relays for power windows and headlights) that I am not sure what GM was thinking.
Just kidding, they were trying to save $$ lol
Man no matter what route you take with the Suburban you gotta keep that perfect red interior! My '77 I pieced back together turned out great but your factory one doesn't need a thing.
you know if you had asked me a year ago I would have looked at you funny, but after spending some time in the lush interior it has grown on me a ton. The kids dig it, it is super clean, and it has this awesome vintagey, time machine, throwback feel to it. I am keeping it. Plus I just couldn't live with myself if I pulled it out and it didnt get used somewhere. It is just too clean to not use
Those LED's are impressive.
Don’t feel like giving burb vids detracts from the channel. Square Body nation will continue to watch and support Merrick’s Garage. All these trucks share parts so one video on any of them carries over to the others.
yea, my thoughts exactly. There are so many little things that can be done to mildly improve, or modernize the squarebodies that it would be a crime not to share them! I think I am gonna start trying to release videos more frequently will shorter segments on lock cylinder replacement, alignments, lighting etc. All the little stuff.....
Glad you dig it!
Merricks Garage the beauty of these older trucks is there is always plenty of little things to deal with. But the big stuff tends to just do its job.
Great Energy! I have a 91 gmc G Van I’m cleaning up with ! Looking to replace dash bulbs now !!
Such a killer upgrade!
dude thank you for this video i have a 1983 chevy 1 ton Squarebody Suburban that me my brother customized its old school now alot has been done to her and still not done we took out the AC put in a regular heater box then took out the computer ook out the power locks power windows put in Old School window cranks and manual locks no fuel injection its got a chevy 350 small block with 400 turbo transmission i have videos on my channel of my Suburban oh and put a 82 chevy pickup front end on it.
Great afternoon project for older truck
I’m a new subscriber. Great video man I can’t wait to see more on the suburban.. now I have a new channel to set my bell icon for👍🏾
Thanks man! Appreciate the sub!!
You said you might go with a vintage air system. Do you think there better than old air systems for aftermarket ac/heater units.
Yea they are a lot smaller and more efficient. I am sticking with my stock unit on the burb though. I mean it works….
@@MerricksGarage thx for your input
What kind of LED lights you have and where you get them from
I know Im behind on this one but Im about to tackle dash lights myself. I read this other build for "Project Mule" (you should check that one. really nice build and documentation on build...in any case, he suggested that the LEDs match the color of the filter it goes through. Did you just use the white LEDs for everything? if so, did you notice the color lights not being as colorful? if that makes sense. thank you !
I just used white. Looks killer!
@@MerricksGarage Sweet! and keeps it simple. thanks again!
The speakers on the dash will they fit a 88 squarebody crew cab truck? I’m assuming it’s the same style set up as the suburban I need all 3 of those speakers tia was a great video for me to find out you CS. Out a Third speaker in the middle of the dash
I cant see why they wouldn't These trucks didn't vary much or at all
Ok cool thanks I’ll get right in ordering them!
I love your videos man! I have a 1990 chevy suburban half ton that I'm slowly working on. The speakers have gone out and I just went and bought all the speakers on your Amazon store. Did you have to do anything special for the 4x10 in the front center, run an amp or new wires?
Nothing. The space was perfectly cut from the dash already and the speaker 🔊 dropped right in.
how did you connect the 5th speaker to your stereo head unit if it is only a 4 channel?
Did you have to do something special for the turn signal bulbs (when replacing them with LEDS) in order for them to work correctly?
I didn’t do anything
@@MerricksGarage @ dash from were???
Ordered these light for 2 separate burbs
Just got my LEDs installed (most of them)!! And they look great!! Thanks for the idea!! I have a question and an observation though. The 4x4 light and the gear light are both hard wired, how did you get those two swapped out? Looks like the heater/ac control light is also wired in. The one observation it seems these LEDs are not dimable, a bummer but not a deal breaker. I'm going to see if I can find a dimable option. Thanks for all your ideas!!
You may be able to buy a led dimmer you can add into the wiring. Had to do it for aftermarket gauges on my old dodge
@@MvpBouck that's a brilliant idea, I'll look into it and report back I'd I find a solution
@@TheDataJake Hey man, any update on the LED dimmer idea?
Awesome video what sunglasses are you wearing?
On with it already.
Excellent video, I need your help as my “wood trim” is all faded and scratched, would you happen to know where can I buy just the wood trim covers for my doors and dashboard (passenger side)?
Man if I could find a source on those panels I would be stoked!
@@MerricksGarage well…. Guess what?…. Be Stoked ‘cause I found them: eBay Dash Trim Kit for CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 82 83 84 85 86 87 88 89 90 91 carbon fibers
I bought some adhesive wood veneer on Amazon and recovered my dash bezel on my K10. It took a couple tries and some hours. But for about $30 it turned out beautiful.
when you went led lights did you have to change the flashers to electronic instead of the old canister style?
good question, but no. I was surprised but it seems that LED technology has come so far that the resistors and temperamental lighting they used to provide with these older trucks seems to have been taken care of. Unless I got extremely lucky during the dash light install none of the LEDs were pole sensitive either.
did you do turn signal bulbs yet?
Do you have a link go gauge needles?
What kind of mirrors did you put are those for a blazer? Been looking online and saw some similar that are shaped to sit over the lip
Looks good!! What Oakley's are thoose?
Double edge
Which one are they on your store theres a lot of led on there
Bitchin....hey thinking of installing a cool air intake on my 89 K5 Blazer , any preference ? Thanks a lot.
if you have the intake like I have, you already have a cold air intake. If you have an open element filter, then look for a factory one. IMO they are the best you can find....
@@MerricksGarage thanks Bro...
Are the outside mirrors factory to that 'Burb?
Yea, they are power too! Nothing but top class!
I started with a 91 v2500... It had those mirrors, I hated them so I put the manual big beautiful chrome 5x7s on... Then we caught a hail storm here in Colorado about a month ago and trashed one.... Now I can't seem to find another one that doesn't have the r rivets in the bucket... They all have rivets!!! So i have 1 with and 1 without rivets...
I tried swapping my lock switch from my passenger side door before an the pins are different. So it wouldn't work
I think it will work if you remove and flip over the lever. They are oriented differently for right and left doors.
Ok I will try that an let you know. Thanks man. Also how is the Burban going? Anymore videos coming on it?
yea, I got new shoes!
Nice. I really like that rig.
Just followed you on Instagram
What's up with thoes mirrors!
Those a factory man! Power!!
How many bulbs total do you need to replace all the dash lights including the ac control bulb and all that? I just need to know how many to order thanks!
Just order them in bulk. Not worth getting less as you will most likely have a couple duds.
Merricks Garage cool man I appreciate it. I ordered them a couple of days ago so I’m super excited!
Make the burban even better!!!!!!
That’s the plan!
Is a good first car
As soon as you mentioned the hot 12 volt wire grounding out and blowing fuses, my mind was made up. This is a job for my mechanic not me😬
Ha ha. Come on. It’s not that bad!
Are your power windows slow to go up and down?
Joshua Brown the power window relay kit is a great mod to do. LMC sells a very simple kit for 2-door and 4-door trucks. Or if you’re electrical savvy, you can google and find a schematic and how to make the kit. LMC also has an install video. Mine on my K5 go up and down in 3 seconds as opposed to the previous 3 months it used to take. Also lube up the channels, regulators, etc while you’re in there and it’s a major improvement.
Ty
I know this was 5 years ago....I just ordered these light based on the video. Anyone else in here use them?
Beware of cheap LEDs (got them from Amazon and they looked exactly like the ones you used). I did this to my 88 K5 last year and after a few of the LEDs failed I went back to incandescent, just decided I didn't want to keep having to replace the faulty LEDs. Who knows, maybe I just got a bad batch or something. Also, the LEDs in the turn signal positions and 4WD indicator are way too bright and will just about blind you at night: if I'd kept in the LEDs I was going to put some dark filter material in to dim them down some. Really love the work you do on your Blazer, and I think the more "regular" work you're starting on the Suburban will resonate with a lot of people too (me included). My 88 K5 is my daily driver. www.ChevyK5.com
I am 14 do u think a Suburban or Blazer
Jonathan Riley First car wise, I would try to stick with a OBS Chevy and not a squarebody if you need reliability. 94ish-98 chevies are fuel injected and have more hp than previous models. They keep you busy usually fixing them on weekends.
If you’re looking for a project though, a squarebody is cool. You would probably have to double the expected amount of upkeep efforts over an OBS though
@@BenLeBlanc1 here the thing love. Square body Chevys my dad has a K5 Blazer in the Suburban and I grew up working on them with him and I'll kind of want the cucv m1009 blazer everybody says they have good gas mileage
Jonathan Riley! Absolutely! Especially a Blazer (my preference). When I was a teen my parents had 3 suburbans and I got their 88 K5. After I got rid of my 85 S-15 Jimmy (Small Blazer). I still have my K5 twenty years later and I’ll never get rid of it. These things are so big and open that they’re easy to work on. Get a Chilton’s manual and seek help on RUclips. Also, go to the forums on coloradok5.com and read through. Find someone to help you when you’re able to buy to find a good starter truck. Something where you’re not fixing a ton of nasty rusted out body, or someone’s crappy rewiring work. Don’t be afraid to ask a mechanic if they’d help you with some things. Or stop and ask some guys at a car show or out cruising. Also if you want to learn more, try to get into an auto mechanics class at your local trade school. A very rewarding career is out there for sharp mechanics who have a willingness to learn and do good work. Just don’t do drugs. Ever. That’s a one way road with very little chance of success. Good luck and drive safe. Private message me if I can help in your journey.
yes! Great input guys. I too think that these trucks can make great first time cars. But....don't go out and get one that has been hacked. The wiring is usually the first victim of the hack mechanic and chasing electrical gremlins can be very frustrating.
The M1009 are great as they are diesel and incredibly easy to work on. Plus they are slow so a lot safer for a new driver.
Stoked to see the younger generation picking up the torch! Get after it @jonathanriley!
@@MerricksGarage thanks for the info I am a big fan my dad is going to fix up his 1986 blazer and Suburban I love them both like they are a part of my life so I will keep my eyes open for m1009 thanks agian
Junk doors are usually as beat up as the one you're trying to fix. Makes no sense to buy a door you have to store somewhere that's a pile of junk also 🙄🙄🙄
Not sure if serious. Some pretty clean doors where I live
Lol now Tony, why would anybody buy a body panel that's beat up if they needed it to be nice and straight? 😆🙄 Anyone with half a brain would know to obviously buy a part that's in better condition if they needed to replace one of theirs LMAO.
But Merrick was talking about buying a complete door assembly from a junkyard mainly to have all the extra internal/door panel parts and pieces on-hand instead of paying the outrageous prices "they" charge for the nickel-n-dime pieces inside of the doors and other similar parts like that... not the actual door skin itself. Lol
@@MerricksGarage Oh and btw, you got yourself a new subscriber here. Thanks for the good videos, buddy. Hope y'all have a Merry Christmas!
Really showed nothing.
If you simply replace the old lights with leds, the dimming function would no longer work.
this is true, but I can live with it. So much brighter and clearer
