I'm an extremely hypervigilant individual. Most of my adult life was spent either in the military, in correctional institutions, working in law enforcement, or as a bouncer at bars and other venues, and I've been in way more violent altercations than I can count, most where I've prevailed, and some where I've taken some fairly good and permanent lumps. That has made me borderline agoraphobic under certain circumstances. I understand violence and those whom are apt to engage in it as well as anyone, I'd say. I typically don't go out late at night to places where people are intoxicated and likely to behave irrationally, and I avoid places that are known to be more crime prone like certain establishments, neighborhoods, or parts of town that are a bit more shady. On the rare occasions that I do go out on the town, I'm usually with comrades whom I know aren't ones to start trouble, but whom I also know can handle themselves very well, and I usually only frequent establishments that are more clean and socially sophisticated rather than trashy, ghetto, and full of less than savory crowds.
I'm pretty much armed with a firearm or two, an extra source of ammunition, and a decent knife everytime I walk out the door of my house. The only time I don't carry my pistol(s) is when I'm at an establishment where alcohol makes up the majority of the business's profits, so instead of a firearm, I bring a friend or friends whom I know will have my back if the shit hits the fan. I typically order a bottle of beer initially rather than a glass and keep it handy in case I need to use it for something other than a receptacle to hold my beer. Then I will order a bourbon or draft beer. I still carry at least one knife, and I'm constantly aware of my surroundings. I never allow myself to get so inebriated that my motor skills will be hindered or dysfunctional in any way. The only time I allow myself to become that intoxicated is when I'm home or among trusted friends at someone's home. There's just too many nefarious folks among us, in my experience, to live any other way. I've been a victim. It's a real shitty feeling, and getting beat down really sucks. Thank God I've never been stabbed or shot yet. If I can, I will avoid ever becoming a victim again.

You could have simply excluded everything before “I have looked at…” and your point would be so much clearer. We have no idea how intensive or consistent your training since 1973 has been, how qualified your instructors have been over those years, nor whether anything you say about your Rex-kwando is true. No one will read your comment and think “this master of 49 years’ training only disagrees with only a small amount of what this guy says, so it must be worth listening to… to some extent” If you enjoy the content, cool! It's amusing to me listening to this advice. Being South African, we do all of these things instinctively. But most interesting is that we have adapted to avoid these situations altogether. You NEVER walk around at night unless you're armed and/or have no other choice, in which case anyone else out at night is a potential threat as this is not normal behaviour. You can pretty much assume anyone you encounter is a threat and be ready to defend yourself.
Also, in stead of wondering about walking in certain places, just take a cab. If that's not an option, turn around and take another route. Whenever you make a dangerous choice, you know you're doing it and aware of the consequences and therefore prepared to either flee or fight.
We also assume EVERYONE that is unknown to you is a threat until proven otherwise. Even if proven otherwise (say at a bar) you still maintain healthy scepticism and keep your guard up and look for cues.
We also have come to the tragic understanding that, although you have the right to freedom and to go anywhere at any time and do anything (within legal limits) in a perfect world. This ain't it. We still exercise our freedoms, but the need for self preservation always prevails over the right to freedom. After all, you can't exercise your freedom if you're dead.
People need to forego the notion that they will do whatever they want or go wherever they want because it is their right to do so. We all get it! We all want that! But it's not reality.
You need to make a choice about whether you want to be free and smart or free and stupid, just like we do. For us it's just a built-in habit and understanding that the world is a dangerous place and you're never safe unless you're inside your house and you've taken the proper measures to fortify it like Fort Knox.
What my actual point is learn to avoid dodgy alleys and people standing around in strange places or acting abnormally. Also, when you get that feeling something's not right, get the hell out of dodge. Don't wait to find out.

  • @gordmacdonald9711

Always look like you're going somewhere specific. The "I don't have time for you/impatient look." Hands in pockets. Don't saunter unless you know the surroundings.
Never obey, "Hey, come here for a second."
Over politeness is a sign for mischief or worse.
Brand new sneakers on someone over forty is a sign that says, " Come and punch me in the face and take my wallet."
Criminals on the street (mostly) don't wear glasses. If YOU do....
Connect with a crowd, on a subway or moving around.
If an event gets out that has some adrenaline attached, the first people out the door are the most aggressive and maybe the most angry. Stay back for a few minutes.
Beware of the first person you meet in a given social situation. They may be thinking, "Ahhh, they don't know me yet...".
Don't carry a weapon. Carry a pen. A good solid pen with a metal tip.
Learn a few phases of a language nobody speaks and respond confused by people you don't want to engage. Scottish Gaelic works well.
If you do get a gun stuck in the back of your head(a 9mm Beretta for instance), hold your hands out from, tell him to relax and that you won't make a sudden move , tell him you're getting the money with one hand hand it to him and wait til he's gone.

This is something that isn't talked about or practiced enough. Our 6th sense. Everyone has it. And like anything else if you don't use it or focus on it, it aptrophes. We've all heard the term trust your gut. It's no joke, if you tune yourself and pay attention to those little messages you get in your head all the time. It gets heightened, to where you can read people and feel their intentions. Animals are better than us at this because they weren't taught to ignore it like we were. Horses get spooked, dogs feel uneasy. We should be having those same internal feelings of danger. Wich many of us do, but we're taught to ignore it instead of heighten it.

Years ago my mom had a suspicious man beeline to follow her down the escalators of a busy London metro station. She put her purse in front of her and kept an eye on him through her peripheral vision. The guy stepping off the escalator crouched down to tie his shoelace as a lady behind my mom shoved her over him. She had to release her purse to soften her landing and there it went with the suspicious man. The London police weren’t surprised. This setup would have been hard to anticipate for most but this goes to show how criminals can spend a lot of time getting creative to make things easy for them. The least we can do is make it harder for them by being aware of our environment as much as possible for example.

I've had 2 encounters where people tried to rob me and in both times I got away unharmed and with all my things. They had no weapons in both times and it was always late at night with very few people around. All it took for them to leave me was show confidence and lack of fear, not even acknowledging that I was being turned into a victim. This worked well because, again, they had no weapons and it may be worth losing your phone and wallet if there is a risk of getting stabed or shot, also in both times I could see them comming and just by the way they behaved I could tell from far away that they were looking for trouble with me and in that sense it would most likely be wiser to just leave the area and avoid it alltogether

Bad guys rarely telegraph their intentions. They will either approach you from behind, or from in front looking like they will just pass you by. They key is striking distance. They want to enter this space and attack while you're busy looking at your phone or distracted. It is all about the sucker punch delivered immediately after the smile, look of disinterest or the question about what time it is or how do I get to the train station

    • @sparrowflying864
      @sparrowflying864 Год назад +1

Yeah had a guy try to attack me when I left the train to go to the bathroom. I first saw this guy on the train. He was about 28-30 5'9 white male thin build with an avalanche jersey on. He's a young guy with brown semi curly hair with a avalanche jersey and matching hat. He didn't look like anyone to be concerned about he was an average looking guy. But you can't go by looks. Looks can be decieving. I didn't notice he had followed me at first because I was focused on getting to the bathroom which was a distance out about a hundred plus feet up on the platform. It was dark out but dimly lit due to being far out away from the main platform at DUS. When I come out of the bathroom I was walking back to the train and I spotted this guy leaned up against one of the concrete columns behind it purposely hiding in the shadows. I started walking a little fast as I was coming up parallel where he was and I knew he wasn't there for the bathroom because he didn't have clearance to use it and there would have been no reason for him to have been that far up there because nothing is up there but the amtrack train. I got imeadiately creeped out! My gut reaction was this guy is casing me! As soon as he saw me he imeadiately made a bee line right strait towards me and got a few steps behind me. I got pissed and stopped and turned around and shouted at him like wtf dude! And he split off to my right and went to the END of the train and walked midway up and sat down all non chalanletly. I had gotten on the first door and was watching him walk up from the back of the train. I don't know if his intention was to push me off the platform or something else. But I got pissed and turned around and confronted him when he was coming up behind me that close in a dimly lit area. Get pepper spray or your conceal carry folks. I see him on the train now and I'm ready for the freak this time..

Although this is a widely covered subject, I'll try to explain it in a few sentences.
First of all, you want to be vigilant. You don't want to walk around with your head down and hunch over. Walk straight up like if you're wearing a cape.
Second, be aware of your surroundings. Glance around, look like you're enjoying the sites. LOOK AT PEOPLE. Apply what Dr. Phillips say. If someone you think is giving you the "interview," acknowledge them by knotting your head at them. Don't have to smile just let them know them know they're there.
Third, LOOK AT PEOPLE. Apply what Dr. Phillips say. If someone you think is giving you the "interview," acknowledge them by knotting your head at them. Don't have to smile, but don't have to give them a dirty look neither. Just let them know they're there.
There are more, but these are the jist.
A good example is if you watch the secret service agents guarding the president, or a protection detail for someone like a celebrity or something. Don't have to look like them, but how they look around for anything.
      Stay safe.

Environmental awareness is something we should be taught in schools. I can usually feel if something is off, that then causes me to react.
Its subtle at times, I also believe it has saved my life on more than one occasion.
Society has so many distractions these days whether it be people on their phones or with earphones in or just caught up in their own dramas in their minds.
I was walking through a busy park area at night with my dog near takeaways + shops + I watched weird lights in the sky, followed by a helicopter.
When I looked around not one other person had even noticed 😂
Can you do a video on being in public in an enclosed area examples being a shopping centre or train station please?
In todays climate I make an effort to avoid high traffic public areas but sometimes its not avoidable.
Im literally working out where exits are as I'm walking through somewhere if I had to bail out quickly if there was a terrorist threat or whatever.

Very interesting video. I would like to add my point of view: A possible threatning person with a criminal background is most likely observing you in order to wait for the best moment for his attack. In that case I would make a robber who is observing people around him, understand that I took notice of him simply by lookiing at him- in many situation he is gonna look for an easier vctim because that way I am forcing him into action.
A person under drugs or alcohol I would avoid to look at and tray to get by as quick as possible.
Being a good abserver yourself, as mentioned in the video, is probably the best self protection tool because as sooner as you notice things around you the more time you have to react.

I trained in Krav Maga (KMA) for several years and our instructor was actually attacked and shot during an attempted robbery while he was taking his girlfriend home in one of the ‘top 5 most dangerous cities’ in America. At the time he was competitive in traditional martial arts and had not discovered Krav Maga yet. He realized while recovering that all his years of training and learning scripted moves did not prepare him at all for a real world attack and he decided to switch disciplines and actually went to Israel to train with IDF instructors that trained with Imi Lictenfeld. He began to understand urban combat and much of his lessons were based in real world situations that he had been in or heard about in the news. We did many real world scenarios outside of the gym and he used to have students from other location that were unfamiliar to our classes come in as unknown aggressors just to teach us how to think on our feet and recognize and neutralize threats and not become complacent. We did drills in cars, walking down the street, in a crowded bar, in closed quarters such as a restroom or ATM vestibule and we discussed strategy and how we needed to make constant adjustments to keep up with changing conditions. We had several high school and college aged females that trained there and the female instructors would hold free ‘workshops’ to teach women how to be more aware of their surroundings and how not to be an easy victim which isn’t always beating up an attacker but just making their actions more costly in time or attention or in worst case pain and suffering, at least long enough for them to get away. We had a few very brave volunteers (myself included) that would ‘simulate’ a real attack and we all took some very real and very painful shots in the name of hopefully giving someone the skills to get home alive. At the end of the day, we didn’t train to fight, we trained to survive.

I was mugged at knife point at age 18. I was next to my car and a guy ran up out of what seems like nowhere. He had a tiny knife, like a Swiss Army knife, held it in my eyesight and told me to give me all my money. I was completely caught off guard and I started laughing. I sincerely thought it was a joke or prank. I was a broke 18 year old girl getting into a beat up old car. He started shuffling his feet loudly at me saying come on give me the money. I just said i dont have any and he demsnded a few more times then ran off.
Im guessing he was very new to armed robbery and i was probably his first ever. I went up to the gas attendant and had them call the police. He was caught that night about 10 minute later.
I always thought i would know how to handle any situation, but it can really hit you from left field.

Curb to my left. 4 thugs were walking directly in front. There eyes told me they were assessing prey. I was wearing a sport coat. The friend on my left. I gently took her arm moved her closer. The 4 thugs got wider. I moved my right hand to hem of sport coat. Flipped it back. The thugs gave us a very wide berth. She said what happened? I said they chose a wiser path.
