  • If you are like me you have given some consideration to the infamous "Baby Head Hill" when mentally and perhaps practically preparing for the WABDR.
Don't fret, it's not very long, and not that bad...
At least if you aren't riding a GS1200, in which case if you fall with that elephant on top of you and then have to put it upright, then it's probably that bad. If you are on a 1200 because you are so good that falling is rare, I won't bust you up. Yes I will... :) ...just because you can, does that mean you are actually enjoying yourself as much as if you rode something smaller?
I rode an xt250 which made it relatively easy though certainly still fairly intense. I'm a 5'4" lady, so when I advise riding a small bike I mean why would you want to ride this or any other dedicated unpaved adventure on something larger than a 650? Even the guys with me on 650's fell once or more on the sections in this video, one fella longing for his dr400.
So, that's my two cents... ride small if you have the option and have a great time!

Glad to see you got baby head hill right have seen a few videos of baby head hill that were not the right section but showing the first section you showed! Definitely need some more momentum should be in second gear! I just did the whole wabdr on my xr650l no bypasses. Was so much fun!

Derp... I had wished the first section was the right section!... having thought, "hey, that wasn't so bad"... my friend thusly responding, "nah, it's down the road a ways". I had decent momentum up the baby head section after my slowmentum debacle earlier, with the pickle of a higher gear making me go faster than I wanted or otherwise lurching, but the lower gear being too punchy. I've got a solution worked out for next time... no next time. 🤪 Actually the DR's gearing would have been perfect... it glugs along perfectly in such situations.

My saying for off-road motorcycling is "Lite is Right!". My little WR250R is great for this sort of thing. Did the CDT a couple years ago on it in 9 days and had a blast! There was only one hill I couldn't make the climb....Fleecer Ridge (I made two attempts and tumbled down it twice just to make sure it was a bad idea!). I was solo so a third time was not in the cards. Minor route around and away we go! Nice video. Looking forward to doing the WABDR and ORBDR over the next year or two. Beautiful country.
