  • Just as vehicles have roads and rules that dictate the way they travel overland, the flow of boat traffic is also directed by 'roads' and rules, both federal and local. As paddlers using multi-use waterways, we need to be aware of these rules, so in this video, we're taking a quick look at how we as paddlers should interact with larger vessels on the water.

2:46 - "Notice how much easier it is to see this paddler in the bright gear..." ...ya, the guy who is literally less than half the distance closer is easier to see...

The right side of the river in "red right returning" is what most people call the left side of the river. In the most common convention, the left and right side of a river are from the perspective of a person who is facing downstream.
For example, if you were using the facing downstream convention, you would say Tennessee is on the left side of the Mississippi River, but a person using the "returning" convention would say Tennessee is on the right side of the river.
If you are on a river and facing downstream, the red channel markers will be on the left side of the channel and the green channel markers will be on the right side of the channel. A good way to remember this is that red and left have fewer letters than green and right.

So true... Red, right, returning shouldn't be confused with river right, which is the exact opposite on a river...

I love getting waked I move in a safe distance from the boats as they go out to sea just outside the no wake zone an signal to the boats to peg it an many do! 🤙

Very interesting theme. I am planning another trip and will have to cross some very intensively used lanes. When you have to cross the main shipping channel, are there more ways to avoid the real big cargo ships other than just "by sight" and paddling like hell when there is a gap between them?

We paddle the ICW with coal barges always running up and down to the power plant. The best advice I can give is pick the narrowest part of the channel to cross so you're in the channel the least amount of time, and don't forget about the enormous wake a large ship will throw up after it passes.
