As an Englishman born in the early 1950’s, I was very sorry to hear about the death of Ronan earlier this year. Ronan was a champion of my generation in England and changed the face of British youth / pop broadcasting culture in Britain in the 60’s but alas he was yet another Irish rebel persecuted by the British Government via the BBC! His grandfather of course is a great hero of mine “The O’Rahilly” (Michael) who was, in my humble opinion, one of the bravest and most honourable of those involved in the Easter Rising and I had the privilege of meeting Romans brother at the 100 anniversary in Dublin. Thank you Roman for being a pioneer for the youth of Britain and for being a massive part of my teenage years. Keep on rocking in heaven!

Sounds like the UK radio was in the Dark Ages in the early 1960s.

@@johnt7630 Yep, the radio technology was crap, but the actual music of the 60’s itself in the UK...wow, now that’s a totally different story.

He made the 60s bands, bands the BBC said nobody wanted to listen to them. He should have been knighted.

This aired on the Game Show Network about 10 years ago. Likely at other times as well but that's the airing that I recorded.

Still, strange how he sounded so vague when asked about The O’Rahilly, who was, after all, his grandfather, and a legend in Irish revolutionary history. Did he do it on purpose to confuse them? Amazing to think of the contrast between The O’Rahilly being shot down on the streets of Dublin by the British in 1016, and his cool utterly 60’s grandson starting up a pop station off the coast of Britain in the swinging sixties.

"Sad'.......?.......nothing "sad" about it ,if it's because of naturally aging....age will get to us all.....

There *was* radio, just that it was the B.B.C. I think that competition from Radio Caroline &c. caused it to get more up to date.

And why should someone operating radio stations far away be expected to know what they did there?! That panellist always wants to show off her knowledge of Ireland first of all and secondarily Great Britain.

SPOILER: I knew it wasn't #1....Sid Bernstein was a concert promoter, who presented the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, among others, in New York.
