Strange really, to see Thompson without a cigarette in his mouth.
Probably why he looks as nervous as he does
Or with hair.
I will smoke one for him
It’s weird to see HST be still for longer than one second.
HST came to my college on a speaking tour in 1979. He appeared to be sober but was virtually unintelligible for the entire hour. He tried to tell a joke in his mumbling monotone but it was impossible to understand him. Still, a fkn legend in print!
Dude that's insane. What was life like in the 70s? Also was it really that unintelligible or maybe his microphone did him injustice
If you watch video clips of HST, especially as he got older, e.g., his Letterman appearances, he progressively becomes more difficult to understand. He drank whiskey and smoked some weed with us later that night but his behavior and speaking cadence didn’t change. He just mumbles a lot.
@@fennis26 I know the answer should be obvious but did you ever take your time to watch the movie Fear and loathing in las vegas?
Oh yes, Johnny Depp did a spot-on job of channeling HST.
@@fennis26 That's awesome. I wish I could've met HST. Do you remember what his speech was about?
Another one of those things where you can't believe it ever really happened...
Books don’t sell themselves.
What I thought
But it did.
I remember watching this at the time. We heard of some guy "joining" the Angels so he could write a book (he was an instant legend) and I was suprised that he popped up on this show. "Hey, this is the guy!"
Feb 20 1967...I get chills....38 years to the day...Thompson killed himself...RIP Gonzo
He was 67 years of age when he did it. This aired in '67. Peculiar observation, that.
My birthday was 30 years after this :'/
Sandy Howell So you knew the real HST and spent time with him in Woody Creek? You saw this degenerate behavior? Did you? Or are you just projecting?More likely envious of his legacy. As flawed as he was, you’ll never aspire to his worst day. But you can try.
Feb 20 1967. The day Kurt Cobain was born...
That was back when I could understand what he was saying😉
That's before the drugs began to take hold.
wow ..my sons middle name is hunter because of Hunter..long live Gonzo!!!!!
@Anthony Cooney Right, THANK YOU!!!!These people in this comment section are pathetic! They worship this scumbag when they have no clue what he truly was! On top of that, when they have access to the true information they're all to dumbed down and brainwashed to beleive it. Sorry, I'm just ranting because I'm so sick of ignorant people. Truly ignorant and they've all been fooled, unbelievable!! Thank you for your comment , it's nice to know there are people out there that know the actual truth!!
in a rare sober moment.
He wanted to be referred to as Dr.Hunter Thompson.
Hunter looks so awkward and shy, it makes me wanna go back in time and hug him lmao
Pretty sure he would of lightened up if number1. Someone bitch slapped anyone on that arrogant panel. (Except, what's his face.. the comedian)
Number 2. any female under 30 would of flashed him.
Number 3. He got the wiff of something wrapped in a zigzag waiting for him off stage.
- Buy the ticket, take the ride!"
♡.♡
Notice how careful they are not to disrespect or insults the Hells Angels in their answers. Very neutral.
Always wanted to catch this clip, thanks for uploading!
Recognized him straight away.
Martin Fuller Kinda tough to mistake him for any other person, especially when the others are shorter, look nothing like him and he isn’t wearing biker attire...
@@drbreeden4093 Well, this is 1967, before he became as well-known as he became in the '70's. Moreover, the entire panel was made up of showbiz types who all knew World War II as adults, and for whom "beatniks" or "hippies" were just a punchline.
The panel killed it.
He's the only one who didn't come off as an actor. It was pretty obvious, I'm sure.
No way, that woman has the most annoying voice ever.
The two other guys dressed like bikers, but not him. Lol.
I reckoned to show society the illusion of a motorcycle club member (or ex) that its not just a stereotype
@@blazingbleezy668 I doubt that’s why lol.
My new line "They're laughing at all the wrong things!"
5:31 when he says three listen to how low his voice trails down wow
MK trigger?
Barry Nelson was in the Shining...woah... THE INTERVIEW
Rare shit, Hunter Thompson is my spirit animal.
im so thankful to you for uploading it this was unbelievable
Imagine Kitty reading Tom Wolfe...
I so wish I could have met Hunter Thompson.
Saammee here.
Yea, in the 60s maybe. Before he turned into a child killer.
Google RUSTY NELSON, and the Franklin Cover up if you care to educate yourself.
It would have been way above her head.
Watched this show as a kid , seems so long ago.
I watched it today and it seemed like I watched it today!
American accents have changed a lot in 50 years. Obviously they vary from state to state but when I watch the Twilight Zone, old films or even this I find the accents far more pleasant. What the hell happened
It's a TV voice and bad sound. If you find a clip with good sound and casual conversations, it's a pretty normal sound. Check out Hunter's tapes from that era!
+Keith Bellew Too much inbreeding
+Burkley Reed Also don't forget the whiskey!
Burkley Reed Your parents being a fine example.
Keith Bellew laziness
This is such a beautiful video. I miss Hunter's writings so much and I have dreamed of visiting Woody Creek. I hope that The Mutineer finally gets published soon just to fill this void.
The counterculture was call beatnix until 1967 when the word hippie came into existence that year ! Beatnix's were totally different than hippys !
i think its spelled Beatniks
Alrighty then!!
Thanks very much.
#1 was Janice Pennington's
(longtime Price is Right model) husband, and she was one half of The Models.
Shear madness. Hunter must have lost a bet with his publisher or some drunk in a bar....gotta love when Tom Posten talks tough and says he'd rather beat up number two vs. the others....he would pee his pants in a fight with any of those guys....
"talks tough"? lol
Well, "Hell's Angels" was his second novel, and his first "Rum Diary" he didn't publish at that time yet, so if I was a young and starving for money and wrote my 1st published piece of work - i'd likely go on a dumbass gameshow to promote my book too.
Agreed....
Of course, this coming from a guy who lived in the High Cassel...
Julius Gonzo 60’s niggas were different tho
Tom Poston is the man!!!
This is so surreal . Of course making it totally appropriate.
Priceless, compared this to the mindless game shows we have now.
+GuyCybershy what are you on about this is horrible its demeaning to persons participating
@@svenlittlecross i found it incredibly boring
WOW THE DAY HE DIED YEARS EARLIER...CHILLING!
wow, glad to see this on youtube. always enjoyed that show and still watch it on gsn. i knew who it was cause i read the bookand had seen him before. i'm sure his answers or any comments were a bit guarded and i don't blame him.
He threw himself on the ground and missed. Boy, that Tom Poston is a laugh riot.
Yep, I remember when Robin Williams used that joke in the early 80's.
LOL
i actually found it kinda true though. lsd is a plain old mindfuck. love the old offhand talk about psychedelics on mainstream TV. coming back in recent times
Not Tom Poston’s joke. He’s quoting Leonard Lyons.
@@euckb It's very interesting how today's media is in many ways a lot more sanitized than it used to be. For example, most videos released on RUclips are heavily censored. Every video is automatically screened and if they're found to contain anything at all that RUclips's robots don't consider "family friendly", they are instantly demonetized (i.e. the uploader won't receive any money). It could be words like "fuck" or "shit", sensitive topics (like sex or drugs), etc. It's actually quite disturbing and dystopic in my opinion.
6:37 "will the real slim shady please stand up"
I can't fucking believe this......that his lyrics are from Hunter
the lyrics aren't from Hunter, they are from this Game Show they say it in every episode and Hunter was only in 1 episode lol
@@SirCorneliusBlack yeah man
😆
First man talking seemed like someone who really knew how to ask questions.
damn, i guessed number 3
It’s weird to see him so still and nervous. He must be sober
Love 60s television
This show made it obvious who the real Hunter was by having him casually dressed while the other 2 guys had leather etc on.
Especially after the first quote they use from his book is shitting on their leather jackets
i didn't think they were going to get it because hunter was so quiet and and a bit guarded with his answers but then again he had reason to be. the merry pranksters indeed.
I don’t get your comment about the Merry Pranksters. They weren’t violent at all. Probably broke laws about petty theft and definitely broke drug laws but otherwise they were peaceful hippies, nothing like the Hell’s Angels.
@@michaeldebellis4202 yes, you're correct on all counts.
This took place one week before my 13th birthday.
Kitty Carlisle is one hip chick!
Stoned.. ripped. Good people.
And had some hair on top.
Amazing. I never knew this existed.
RIP - HST ~
I think Glenn Jacobson (panelist #1) was married to Janice Pennington, a model who was one-half of the group, The Models. The Models recorded a psychedelicized version of "Bend Me, Shape Me," which was later a hit for the American Breed. Janice Pennington later posed in Playboy in the 1970s, but she had a much longer career as one of "Barker's Beauties" on the Price Is Right.
in 1967 , $150 was a still worth something.
Da Man...
wow hunter's pretty tall
Yeah, Johnny Depp was too small looking to play him, I thought.
This is just bizarre but I'm guessing it was part of a publicity tour to promote his book. He got the plug on TV and it only took 10 minutes. Hunter's either sober or he's so high he just appears sober. I say it's the latter.
😅😂🤣 Hunter on that! Hilarious, but why? Oh, paycheck. 😉 ~ Must be serendipitous. I'm reading Hell's Angels right now! 😹
theyd usually talk with the guest of honor afterwards... shame really, though they could see his nervousness to be on public media
Was the point for the real person to throw them off, I feel like Hunter was playing it down to try and fool them.
Yes, and the show tries to confuse the guessers by dressing the three of them oddly too. See how 1 was dressed like a biker and hunter like an average joe?
it's not the same without David Mitchell and Lee Mack
What a merry prankster.
Read tom wolfes book, the' electric kool aid acid test.then you will know.
Now we know
that's funny. good publicist hunter had.
Three looks like Kerouac.
"HOLY JESUS, WHAT ARE THESE GOD DAMNED ANIMALS!?"
Where do they get their income? Oh, some of them work, some of them 2:39( bleep!)
Regarding the third group of contestants: (spoiler alert!) I definitely thought number three was the truth teller. She provided the best answers even if she didn't always present the information with the utmost confidence. I wanted to vote for her but couldn't understand why she was so nervous. She was constantly playing with her beads and covering her face with her fingers. Did it strike anyone else as odd that a woman in a position of authority, who also happens to have a bold personal style, would be so anxious to be appearing on television?
She WTF?????
HST, Paul Bonacci, bohemian Grove.
Why Hunter Thompson always looks at the ground?
Nervous? Drugs?
yegenek Because honest people often look down and left when they're recalling things. Liars look up and right.
No coke
Didn't want to be there, shy maybe
Hunter was extremely awkward.
What is the word missing @2:41 ?
Wondering the same. I think he may have said "drift around"?
not trying to brag but i knew which one was hunter from the beginning
Hey is #3 Tony Hawk's Father? Same name, Sure is a Pretty Trippy small world.
Just did a quick search, his first name is the same as Tony Hawk's father's middle name, so maybe?
Peggy Cass is a babe!
hunter s thompson, thorn in the side of society and we have the hells angels as well.
Sounds as if the beatnik’s were the first hipsters.
Only hunter spoke correctly 🤣🤣
The odd thing was that Hunter could not fool them. These incurably irritating celebrities on the panel actually picked the right person- Hunter! Must be the blotter acid.
hahahah, *LSD PROPAGANDA*. hahahaa
'Tried to throw himself on the ground, but missed' bwaaa..
Who is Gut?
Gut Terk of course!
BOHICA sent me
#3 looks a lot like the first man to not walk on the moon
i get the impressionthe two opther guys are actually two of the Angels that ''stomped'' him after the phase he spent with them... seems to be an ''uncomfortable'' easiness between them... maybe he got them the job on the show as they (especially Skip Workman) complained about him not giving them a keg of beer for letting him spend time with them.
What’s going on here??
Hunter is tall af
The day of Kurt Cobain's birth. Also the date Thompson died, years later.
My birthday too :'/
Zero significance
@@drbreeden4093 I disagree
That was......strange
why
@@uyuyuy99 plausibly at the very least because we know who Thompson is & they clearly don't, which just seems, as is said, strange. too, is this not the most laconic version of Thompson available? besides which, this is just an absolutely bizarre cultureclash, sticking him in such an environment (though Carlisle comes across here as uniquely determined in what otherwise rates as pretty lowrent questioning; the dynamic shifts briefly with her). great to see this: thanks rrgomes!
Will the real Dr of Gonzo journolism please stand up
Stop I laughed
Its number 1 ffs
I think the whole dressing the two squares in biker gear really gave it away. They both look soo silly, like the school nerd with a drawn on mustache and a visible frown
Up next on Whats my Crime

Let me see: Is it one of the two guys who look like they were sent by Central Casting, or is it the scruffy looking tall guy who looks like he just jacked a motorcycle?
this is twilight zone, Thompson almost had it worse than Nietzsche
Hunter, why did you choose to leave on a day that people now connect with grunge boy??!! Please dont put the 2 together in any serious conversation, people!
Really! Thank you! Thompson was much more refined and interesting of a person and certainly more accomplished overall! Who would be most entertaining to hang with? Either Thompson or Dave Grohl imho...

How the fuck do they not know who he is?
I’ll make Depp the happiest man ever. Dam hes so sexy but so unique and it’s people such as him who actually understand my uniqueness and aren’t intimidated by my physical appearance. Feel like he’s down to earth neo granola hippie hipster who’s content with himself and was very little from the material world and western culture as a whole.
This was the day Kurt Cobain was born.
LSD
Well what the fuck? Hunter was the only one not dressed like a biker...
What in the fuck
I searched this date up because it was the day Kurt Cobain was born...
