  • Wuji stance is the foundation of Tai Chi and Qi Gong in all styles, including the Wudang Pai style. This short video provides a clear introduction for beginners, and explains some common mistakes that can be found with this stance, sometimes years down the line. The clip is taken from my Wudang Pai Tai Chi Basics Series, which provides 6 hours of expert tuition online and can be found here wudang-pai.thi...

Good point about the hips. In the days when I used to teach, I would say "You're not Michael Jackson!"

Good choice - a classic thruster. Personally I'm with the Timewarp. Thinking a Rocky Horror Remix of this vid would work ;)

@@WudangLucia "Put your hands on your hips and draw your knees in tight" is more Wing Chun, I guess.

Thank you for posting this. I am now correcting my hip thrusting forward. . Are you bending your knees sitting down like you are sitting down on a stool?

Hi Sean, I'm glad you have found the video useful. I do bend my knees as if at the very start of sitting down - the main purpose of this is to help relax the hips. There is a connection between front and back here; you only bend at the front (knees) as much as you can sit down at the back (hips). When you do this, it means your knees never extend past your toes (a crucial rule) no matter how low you sit. It takes time to get there though, so most people need to start with a high stance until they learn how to release the hips. I hope that helps!

Thanks for this. I'm definitely having issues with this posture ! I feel like I'm putting way too much pressure on my knees

You're welcome! You might be bending the knees too much, leaning forward can also give that feeling. If you take a photo of yourself from the side and email it to me I'm happy to give you my opinion.

What's with the Taoist clothing? Extra credibility? The Tao does't call for any particular clothing. I hope it gets you a decent living.
