The guy in the Gucci shirt said it perfectly, younger people associate their tattoos with their sense of fashion. With social media being so prominent, it allows more and more young people to see the types of clothing that are worn outside of their small town or city. No one dresses like I do in my small town in alabama because I get my sense of style from a mix or creators here on RUclips. This translates to tattoos because we want people to see our tattoos as a part of our outfit. That can’t happen if they are all covered, which is why the trend has transitioned to getting tattoos that are considered “jobstoppers.” They are more visible and nowadays people care less about tattoos so it’s not as taboo to get one on your hand, forearm, neck, etc. face tattoos are still a little eh for me but to each their own.

Bless my boomer grandfather, he was in the US navy as a young man in the 60's, and along with several other guys went to get a tattoo. The needle when down, and he went "NOPE, can't do this" and called his single dot of ink a gnat. After his passing I got a full tattoo in his honor.
as a gen z, I plan on sticking to strictly line work because shading tends to turn what could have been a perfectly passable tattoo into either a great one or a shit one and I am not going to take that risk. But there is also genuine charm in minimalist tattoos, maybe tattoo artists aren't as into them because then it gets harder to justify making a profit or whatever but it's a really nice aesthetic.
Thank you! As a gen z, I agree. I rarely see shaded tattoos that I like (but if the person likes it then that's what matters, of course). I feel like linework tattoos can match whatever you wear better too.
I guess Gen X just doesn't exist anymore, lol. For us, it was new school, tribal, Looney Tunes (Tweety, Tasmanian Devil), fairies, tramp stamps, yin yangs, barbed wire armbands.
I kinda feel like when they were talking about Boomer tatts they actually meant Gen X. Tribal, dolphins and lower back tattoos were definitely a Gen X thing.
as a gen z i think my generation goes big and bold or very minimalistic with a lot of tattoos. gen z respects the art of tattooing and we are willing to pay the artist for their work. not all of us have tiny tattoos. i mostly have big ones and so do my friends but a lot of people also have mimalistic tattoos. some people just tattoo themselves or let their friends tattoo them like someone said because we don't really care about the quality per say it can be more about the memories. we just have fun with our tattoos and don't always have a deeper meaning. at this point its art for arts sake and i think thats beautiful.
@@decodeddiesel exactly, our parents are boomers. Us 70s babies are Gen X, with rubbish tramp stamps and tribal tats! Someone also said we started the trend of mis-spelt Chinese character tattoos which I think we have to admit
I'll add to the, "you skipped Gen X" but I get it, everyone does. As an old Millenial I remember seeing the Gen Xer's who got a lot of Traditional and Tribal Tattoos. Heavy lines, deep colors. Stuff you could read from a mile away. I think a lot of you were also mixing together Gen X and Boomer. Again, makes sense, everyone does it. Gen X is the forgotten Gen for a reason.
@@whitedarkness11756 so what you're saying is you hate your parents? Funny, that's what a lot of us Gen Xers said about, and continue to say, about our boomer parents. Must be a every generation. Your kids will say that about you, too

Millennial here, just got my first tattoo at 32 of a butterfly after having a total thyroidectomy (the butterfly gland) and being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Also suffered a permanent disability from the surgery. The butterfly means a lot, something that was broken and replaced symbolically. Sad to see them knocked in several videos since they're very popular in the thyroid cancer community. They're beautiful and classic even if someone doesn't have the same meaning for them too.
@@amyg8176 It' was more so in the multiple other videos where some of them roll their eyes and sigh about "basic" tattoos and butterflies being one of them in a very negative way for it being "on trend". I was going off the generalizations made about it since it contained some of the same artists in this video and those videos, like there's a weird disdain for it. In general, it feels weird to see artists scoff at certain ideas that can have deep meaning to people. I felt the same thing from the artist that did mine (the only regret of mine) which meant holding back on telling him what I was doing it for. **should admit that I should have put my original comment on one of the others videos but I heard butterflies and felt like "here we go again" :/ Since butterflies have a significance in the thyca community it seems like it should be stated on at least one of these videos.
I’d like to see Inked to a video on tattoos that have been adopted by different communities. I know of the semicolon tattoo and there’s one for those who have struggled with eating disorders. It makes sense there would be a number of tattoos related to the fight shading cancer. Also, I really like the idea that butterflies are classic. I get why people view them as cliché, but aren’t roses cliché too? Or any traditional Americana tattoos? The butterfly should be considered a traditional/classic tattoo. Imo, the only reason it’s not in that pantheon is because it’s popular among young women.
They aren’t knocked because of that they’re mostly knocked because they’re popular to represent freedom but there’s a lot of way that you could do that without just doing the exact same butterfly tattoo from Pinterest every time. Nobody’s knocking on having tattoos with meaning word when they represent cancer you’re taking this too seriously
My grandfather-in-law had a tattoo on his hand that was his biggest regret because he got it as a young man to "look cool" like the gangsters in the area; it was a simple line cross. He constantly warned all the youngins how it had held him back from jobs and how he had been worried while courting his wife that her parents wouldn't let them marry because of the tattoo. Then my husband got his first tattoo (we had already been living together for a year) and his grandpa thought I was going to leave him and actually sat me down to remind me of all the positives of my husband and how at the end of the day being a good man was all that should matter in a marriage...etc. I don't know how I kept a straight face through it all, but when he was done talking I pulled my shirt down and showed him the tattoo I have on my shoulder and explained that tattoos nowadays (early 00s) weren't life ruiners like before, so long as you didn't have job stopper tattoos.
My mom just got her first tattoo at 74 a cross with flowers twisted around it on her ankle she loves it now she wants more. And yes all her church friends said it’s pretty lol
Gen z here, got a pretty bad first tattoo. Then I went to Jimmy Snaz for my next one and I couldn't be happier. I’m a bit miffed that Gen X weren’t included in this! In my opinion, we were the ones that made tattoos socially acceptable. I know a lot of us got tribal/celtic stuff (and I have both of those!), but we’ve also got some amazing art on us too!
i 100 percent agree. tats were still rare/hidden until the 90s. we went hard first. now every kid has one... its bats! gen x makes showing ink an acceptable thing and we get forgotten for our trouble. boomers, real boomers, have american traditional and military flash etc... often were done around time of korea or vietnam (well at least those i remember on uncles and older relatives.) fairly unseen on women until gen x...

@@fridayjonesusa Nope, Gen X is ~1965-1980. Millennials are ~1980-1995. I'm 1986 as well, and ain't no way I'm Gen X. 30 years is too long to define a generation these days; a single generation has cultural commonalities they were raised with, and people who grew up in the 70s (born 1965) have virtually zero in common with kids who grew up in the 2000s (born 1995).

As a gen Z with a with a big leg tattoo I found it funny when they kept talking about gen z getting smaller tattoos. I feel like that's what they're doing now but, as they get older and more comfortable they'll start getting the bigger pieces. Especially when the smaller ones start aging so they get them covered. (My leg tat is a also a cover up of a tat I got on my ankle) Also, I'm glad that that paying was also mentioned. For my leg tat, if I remember, was 800 dollars total but after tips I ended up paying 1,200 for it. I will always tip at least a $100 per. session. Do I need to? Probably not, but I want to because it's something that's on my body forever and I want the person doing the work to be happy as well. 2022 I'm going to get my other leg done and I'm so excited. 🤩
I’m gen z and I honestly don’t like the tattoo trends! It’s a lot of spontaneous random shitty tatts and it seems like it’s a goal to get covered as fast as you can and cheap as possible. I’ve only seen a handful of gen z with good tattoos. I knew as soon as I started getting tattoos, I wanted all neo or American traditional and good quality done at proper places and I’m taking my time, I have 6 tattoos and I slowly wanna work into full sleeves.
Same here, I used to want to rush it but now I'm giving it time to save up and get the best pieces possible, as well as to experience more life and get new inspiration for tats. What a cute story thanks for sharing xxx
What tattoo did you get?
as a gen z, I plan on sticking to strictly line work because shading tends to turn what could have been a perfectly passable tattoo into either a great one or a shit one and I am not going to take that risk.
No it’s just a really ugly aesthetic, they look unfinished and look like they were drew on with a permanent pen

I guess Gen X just doesn't exist anymore, lol. For us, it was new school, tribal, Looney Tunes (Tweety, Tasmanian Devil), fairies, tramp stamps, yin yangs, barbed wire armbands.
👍
love that!!!!
👏👏👏
Yes, lots of black and lots of cartoonist styles.
i do
I kinda feel like when they were talking about Boomer tatts they actually meant Gen X. Tribal, dolphins and lower back tattoos were definitely a Gen X thing.
as a gen z i think my generation goes big and bold or very minimalistic with a lot of tattoos. gen z respects the art of tattooing and we are willing to pay the artist for their work. not all of us have tiny tattoos. i mostly have big ones and so do my friends but a lot of people also have mimalistic tattoos. some people just tattoo themselves or let their friends tattoo them like someone said because we don't really care about the quality per say it can be more about the memories. we just have fun with our tattoos and don't always have a deeper meaning. at this point its art for arts sake and i think thats beautiful.
gen z: minimalistic
Millennials: trap stamp, tribal
baby boomers: american traditional, pin ups
8:52 she was spot on with her answer
I think tramp stamp and tribal is more gen x and millennial is more stuff like geometric, realism, watercolors, white ink, etc
Ah - Gen-X, still the forgotten generation ;b
Yeah apparently we are now post-war baby boomers even if we were born in 1979
@@Vonononie Born in 70s. Parents born in late 40s. Not a boomer. Not a millennial.
Again!!!!! 😖😖😖😖😖😖
My parents were Boomers. I'm not. I was born in the 70s.
@@decodeddiesel my grandparents were Boomers, my parents were Gen X.
@@whitedarkness11756 so what you're saying is you hate your parents? Funny, that's what a lot of us Gen Xers said about, and continue to say, about our boomer parents. Must be a every generation. Your kids will say that about you, too

Also, I can't have kids. Genetics are a bitch and my uterus is broken. But cool story about how my nonexistent kids are going to hate me. Love it.
9:09 is the best advice. I spent years wanting to get something with meaning and it’s the worst/dumbest tattoo I have. Picking out flash that you think looks cool is the way to go.
That's a very beautiful meaning
No one knocked butterflies, they just said it’s a tattoo trend, which it is. You can have a trendy tattoo and still find meaning in it.
Thank you, I finally got to see the tattoo that is blurred on his leg.
Born in 94. I have the tree silhouette tattoo. Granted I'm a certified arborist and trees are actually my job and livelihood.
That's cool
Feather tattoos on the ribs were really popular in the early 2010s among younger millennials
Gen z here, got a pretty bad first tattoo. Then I went to Jimmy Snaz for my next one and I couldn't be happier. After watching Inked's videos I knew with a little research I could find an artist who I really wanted to work with, rather than getting a tattoo that I really wanted to get (best formula to get better tattoos). Thank you to channels like Inked for teaching the world about tattoos and tattoo culture
I got a piece from his apprentice Rite Hook! Dude KILLED it. I’m actually booked to get one from his brother Kyle in May. Jimmy is on my bucket list for sure. (Not trying to sound cool, just making conversation)

You're Gen X 1965-1995. Millennials are the thirty year spread from 1995-2015. Fifteen years before and after the Millennium 2000.
@@Meilums42 You were tagged as Gen Y back when Boomer ad men realized how lucrative generational targeting can be. 1995 is the dawn of Gen Mill so that just serves my argument. @@fridayjonesusa Yes, we were initially tagged as “Gen Y”, but shed that moniker so that we wouldn’t be in the shadow of Gen X. From your provided link:
“Millennials, also known as Generation Y[45] (or Gen Y for short), are the generation following Generation X who grew up around the turn of the 3rd millennium. Researchers and popular media use the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s to early 2000s as ending birth years.”
We’re not called Millennials because we were born around the new millennium, but because we came of age around that time.
@@Meilums42 I was a twenty-five year old working in media in 1995 and I recall the huge marketing push around us potential breeders to about bring about the "Millennial Generation," those born within 15 years before and after the turn-of-the-century. It's natural that advertisers want to unite younger spenders with a calculated identity, but Millennial numbers have been fluffed and its even more of a grab-ass the further we get away from 2K. Conflicting generational debates like this are just click bait. In reality sperm levels around the world are dropping 1% a year since 1970 so it's likely generational divisions will be less and less of an issue as the decades ensue.
