- Israel latest news: Egypt's president announced his country proposed a two-day cease-fire between Israel and Hamas where four hostages would be freed. President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi said the proposal includes the release of some Palestinian prisoners.
Israel's Mossad chief is traveling to Doha for talks with the prime minister of Qatar and the CIA chief in the attempt to end the fighting.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said, "not every goal can be achieved through military operations....painful compromises will be required to return the hostages."
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel's strikes against Iran 'severely harmed Iran's defense capabilities.'
Fox News reporter Trey Yingst said in a statement on X, "Regarding the ceasefire talks in Qatar:
'The main aim of the meeting is to discuss plans for a short-term ceasefire in Gaza that would last less than a month,' I'm told by an official with knowledge of the talks."
The parameters of such a deal are being ironed out."

How many Palestinian prisoners? Four hostages for how many? Is this just an effort by Hamas to replenish their fighters as it has been in the past. REMEMBER, Sinwar was a convicted terrorist that was released in one of these deals! The original Israeli policy of not making deals with terrorist worked as a deterrent to hostages taking and as soon as certain factions pressured the Israeli government into making the first deal for a hostage this cycle was encouraged and progressed. Individuals repeat behavior that is successful in getting the results they want. Hostage taking has been very successful for Hamas and they have advanced into taking hundreds of hostages in attacks designed for that purpose. Why not, they are successful in exchanging a single hostage for hundreds of convicted terrorists!

Many of the hostages being held by Israel pre-dates 7 October. These are people who have been held without trial for years some as young as 7 years old.
When they are prisoners from Palestine, you consider all of them as terrorists. Reality is- Israel has been holding children under age 17 as most of their prisoners, without trial, without any concrete crimes. Their only crime was standing up against IDF and security forces atrocities

There have been times when Israel did know where the hostages were but they have to consider the feasibility of getting the hostages out alive without possibly killing too many Gazan civilians. This is especially tricky since the latest orders Hamas gave were to kill the hostages when the IDF gets close to reaching them.

Some Israeli context/analysis:
- A deal is to be agreed to by both Israel and Hamas. A proposal by any 3rd party such as the US or Egypt is arbitrary. It could spark a round of discussion, but by being from neither of the two relevant parties, neither has agreed to it.
- According to international law, civilians shouldn't have been taken hostage in the first place. Every country in the world should put pressure on Hamas to release the civilians unconditionally, and only negotiate for the soldiers taken as prisoners of war.
- Egypt's proposal is very vague. Details matter for any deal. Who are the hostages? Soldiers or civilians? Alive or dead? How many convicted terrorists are to be released in exchange? I would argue that anyone in any comment section commenting in Hebrew or as an Israeli in favor of accepting this proposal is either criminally clueless or is a foreign psyop (We've recently had people caught in Israel working as agents for Iran, and one of their paid tasks is to graffiti "deal now" or something along that line) to create fake pressure on the decision makers.
- In one source's wording I read, which could have been a translation quirk, it seemed that Egypt doesn't see the temporary ceasefire as chip Israel brings to the negotiation table, but instead as something both parties bring to the table. If that is the case, it shows Egypt's loyalty, if it wasn't obvious already. A ceasefire is not something Hamas can offer, seeing how it broke it on Oct 7. Hamas started this war, and it's Israel that is battering Hamas. If someone needs a ceasefire, it's Hamas. Hamas started the war, and only Israel can decide to end it. Ceasefires are a bargaining chip that Israel has. This deal is not hostages-for-prisoners, but hostages for temporary ceasefire AND prisoners. By downplaying the one-sided value of the ceasefire, Egypt is giving Hamas more leverage in the negotiations. Theoretically, this deal could have been hostages for just individual ceasefire days.
- Hamas is incredibly unlikely to accept this proposal. Hamas officials have stated around May (I think) and many MANY times since that it will not accept any offer that doesn't include a full cessation of the war, full retreat of the IDF, bla bla bla. In essence, Hamas wants to survive, and it will not accept any deal that at the bottom line doesn't say "Hamas wins this war for its survival" and "Israel is forced to fail its goals". Israel is willing to - and already did - offer an end for the war if Hamas surrenders and returns all the hostages. Israel will not offer an end for less, which is why it's only willing to offer temporary ceasefires, like in November 2023, and why Hamas hasn't even been to the negotiations table in the past MONTHS (the entire negotiations charade since July was farcical, considering Hamas wasn't even present in the negotiations).
Personally, I think Israel should agree to this proposal, with the following caveats:
1. All hostages must be alive.
2. Only low-level prisoners (mild crimes, short sentences) may be exchanged.
3. Only a single-digit number of prisoners may be exchanged per hostage. The November deal had a ration of 3 low-level prisoners per hostage, and that is acceptable.
I would repeat once more that all civilian hostages should be released unconditionally without an exchange, regardless. But we're dealing with the bloodthirsty terrorists responsible for the October 7 massacre here, so my expectations aren't high.
