    I miss my Australian Shepherd Bar, he was very smart and loyal. I had him for 15 1/2 years. I’m not ready yet for another one but I’m getting there. He was a good friend.

      Can’t imagine losing mine, he’s only 8 months old and we already have so many memories together. I def want to get another when he eventually and sadly dies but I understand how getting a new puppy would be very hard. I’ll probably go through the same process. It feels weird getting a new dog after so much time with a loving, caring dog which you have such a strong connection with and love dearly. I wish you luck, sorry for your loss.

    Aussies are truly incredible dogs! I have a 16 month old pup that I trained to be a gluten detection service dog(yes it’s a real thing) to aid my celiac disease. She has been extremely successful with her training and I haven’t gotten sick for 10 months thanks to her accuracy. She has such a human-like personality and is VERY receptive of how I’m feeling! As a 20 year old woman, it’s definitely nice to have her if I need to go out at night! Training is a life long endeavor with these dogs as they need enough mental stimulation to keep their energy at a minimum. I wouldn’t recommend as a first time dog because they are a HUGE commitment training wise. Do your research and admit that you don’t know everything about training, because no one really does lol! If you raise an Aussie right and train them well, it will be a wonderful dog! If you don’t, they turn into little nightmares! The potential with Aussies is endless!

      My Aussie is my service dog. She started out as a diabetic alert dog and then I got hit by a car. My girl took what I had been able to teach her and run with it far and fast. She now helps with pain and alerting to oncoming dizziness and will make me sit or lie down where she will lie on me until it passes.

    Very good description of Aussie needs. They require engagement all the time. I like your use of the word "leadership" as a criteria we need to provide. They are a fantastic breed and should be treated like royalty, especially with our time and attention. Thanks

    4:15 is key. I raised my Aussie alone on a farm and he’s picked up on every single minute emotion of mine. I can look out the window a certain way and he will run laps around the house checking things. If I’m near him and say “what was that?” He will FREAK and jump to a window or door and bark/become protective.
    Needless to say if I bark curiously he will also prance around and check things out…
    When strangers show up at the farm he GUARD dog barks and runs at people, which I hate… but if they’re good with dogs he immediately wiggles and rolls over for belly scratches.
    It’s kinda a good balance, but I hate that he runs at people barking. Twice I’ve had Hispanic contractors arrive that HATE dogs and they pull away with their hands up, start jumping, etc. It’s “play” for about 5 seconds till he feeds off their energy and actually shows aggression (which freaks me out, again it’s only happened twice with really anti-dog people.)
    Away from the farm and on-leash he’s absolutely perfect and will jump into anyone’s arms and play with anything from a chihuahua to a Great Dane.
    I guess I shouldn’t complain, but they can be VERY good guard dogs depending on the environment they grow up in, as well as remaining great farm dogs and social pets around town.
    Best breed ever. 🐾

    The dogs the Basque shepherds brought to CA were not in fact Australian shepherds but their predecessors. They were Pyrenean Shepherds, a much smaller dog. This smaller dog was not built for the rigors or predators of America so herdsman crossed their dogs with the much larger English shepherd/farm collie and Bernese Mountain dog-as can be felt in the texture of the coat and guarding ability.

      I can see that. I occasionally see an Aussie Shepherd and it's EXTREMELY aggressive, and probably wasn't socialized well. The barking is bonkers and tries it's best to jump the 5' fence to get after me. Beautiful dog though

    My Aussie didn't have the greatest upbringing! Got him from my ex along with with his mix half mini Aussie half Sheltie! Tho he skipped the mini Aussie gene and took the full Aussie gene( something that can happen! My full Aussie (Loki) was kennel trained but had to deal with a bunch of kids with water and nerf guns he was the easy target 🎯! Even run to his kennel safe space and get shot in his kennel with these toys! I learned all this from the previous owner! After I got him I lived with my bro who was into airsoft at the time my Sheltie Aussie mix barks alot! Dumbass brother would shoot airsoft rounds like he thought it would stop the Aussie Sheltie to stop barking! And my Loki nearly went from outside to inside through the window for the airsoft gun!

      Then you have no idea what you’re doing-as most people who get aussies are.
      Look at your own behavior. Reach out to a trainer. Almost every single time the human has reinforced certain behavior’s unknowingly

      I'm hoping u got some training for the dog by now. my aussie is a chicken chit... he will notify you of weird noises and will wake up my big dog then hide behind her..lol. My mutt is trained in protection but im pretty sure he would loose his shit and run away if he ever saw her detain someone who shouldn't be in our home. If he wakes up me or my husband it is really rare but if any of our dogs go off in the middle of the night i put the aussie in his kennel and my husband and the mutt check the house. they dont sleep in kennels we have them for their beds but never shut the doors... free roam of the house.

    We have 2, and they are at the opposite ends of the spectrum from each other. One is very active, and notices everything, training him is difficult due to his wanting to know what is going on all around the area, and not wanting to pay attention to the training. The other, pretty laid back, for an Aussie, and not as observant, but trains easily since he will do anything for food. But they do let you know when someone is at the house.

    Only working bred Aussies will make a good guard dog. They represent only about 10% of the breed, the conformation bred dogs will not. The guarding instinct has been bred out of them, so as to not try and guard the owner from a show judge.The conformations dogs are bred to be happy go lucky, never met a stranger type dog. The working dogs still retain the strong guarding instinct and are always reserved with strangers. Truly they are two different breeds.

    Mine won't even bark when the door bell rings or someone comes to the door. Of someone comes in, like a repairman or something, he attacks them with kisses. Not a good guard dog, but just the way he was trained. I don't need a dog for security personally and would rather have a super friendly with anyone type of dog.

    • @mythirlmaiden
      @mythirlmaiden 3 года назад +2

      Some aussies are like that but most even if you train them are aloof with strangers. They just tolerate the pets and attention from strangers rather than crave it. And a lot do have a guarding instinct because they did protect the stock as well as herd them. Mine from the time he was about 3 months old started putting himself between me and any strangers and needed a lot of work to know that people are okay and we don't need to bark at them. Now he contents himself with an alert bark and settles when we ask but he still has no interest in getting attention from anyone but us and a few close friends.

    • @allaboutroofing2
      @allaboutroofing2 3 года назад

      @@mythirlmaiden I agree with that generally, but there are exceptions. I've had three and the first two were as you described, but my current Aussie loves everyone. He is by far the most loving and affectionate Aussie I have ever know or seen and I am told this often by other people familiar with the breed. My biggest fear now is that we would happily trot off with anyone and I need to keep a closer eye than normal on him. He gets so giddy and excited to meet a new person and loves to give hugs and tuck his head in the crook in your neck and gives kisses.

    • @mythirlmaiden
      @mythirlmaiden 3 года назад

      @@allaboutroofing2 Oh for sure some aussies are like that. Dogs aren't robots and even if the breed standard is aloof there are lots of friendly aussies. The ratio I tend to see is 2/5 are friendly and the rest are varying levels of aloof. Your dog walking off is a concern thats how dog thieves nap them they call and if they come they grab them. I actually knew someone whose aussie got stolen that way. Its made me paranoid.
