The Genie GK-BX garage door wireless keypad was not working half the time. As I was troubleshooting I noticed some of the numbers did not light up when pressing them.
I didn't see anything making the control board not work, but I cleaned it anyway with isopropyl alcohol, put it back together and easily factory reset, put in my code and it worked great!! Thank!!
@@JohnCRV Won’t know until next week. It’s at our kids house. After my wife has terrorized the grandkids for the day she’ll remove it & bring it back home so I can perform your repairs: I’ll report back when I’ve finished. 👍
@@JohnCRV Tried it today, didn’t work. The keypad is only a year old, everything was clean & tidy when I took it apart. I cleaned everything anyway. Had the same issue with the Genie keypad. Disassembled and wiped all contacts with Isopropyl Alcohol, cleaned battery contacts with a Dremel and coated it with WD-40. Works like new now. Thank you John!
I’m going to try this tomorrow. I’ve never done this and thought I’d have to turn off the power…. Doesn’t look like I’ll need to do that. I’ll certainly let you know how it goes

Perfect! WORKS again...! Mine looked reasonably clean inside compared to yours but was still very finicky. I had some medium steel wool in the garage so I took my chances, made no damage to the board, used some contact cleaner and light film of dielectric grease over circuit board, button pads and a bit on battery terminals. Thanks!!! So easy, why didn't I try it long ago???
Update.... Don't use dialectic grease on circuit board. I tried it to hopefully help with possible future corrosion reoccurring, but the buttons stopped responding reliably. Reopened and wiped clean with some lacquer thinner and good to go!
Great idea to take it apart and check out for any obvious issues. This made for a quick repair. Thanks for the tip of adding cooking oil to the terminals.
I have to see if we can even have a wireless keypad for these door openers! We have the huge remote, and the openers work extremely well... but they are old technology, and I need to research how to make them work with newer remotes... Dropping another LIKE on your video, Watching and Supporting!
Wow a great tip here John. Just by removing the oxidation and putting cooking oil you can repair the wireless keypad garage door. Thanks for sharing your video.
Glad you posted this John. I have a very similar, if not identical, Genie keypad and I have noticed that one number requires extra pressure to get it to work. Thank you for sharing this solution. I will be taking my keypad apart now and trying the same thing. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
If it’s not too oxidated and only some powder you can use some rubbing alcohol. Mine was too much, I waited to long so I had to use the 0000 steel wool. Let me know how it works out. Have a great weekend.
Use an eraser to clean the contact surface on the circuit board. Then wipe down with some iisopropyl alcohol to clean up the eraser and residue. The board has a conformal coating that protects the solder runs. You run the risk of scrapping it off if you use steel wool, once exposed the board will easily corrode over. Also clean the keypad with isopropyl alcohol only. There is a thin layer of graphite on the back of the buttons. When the buttons are pressed this is what closes the circuit for the number or function. If the material gets scrapped off or wears off the affected button(s) will not work.
Fixed mine with this video. The only thing I did different was, I cleaned the contacts with electronic cleaner and I coated the contacts with dielectric grease to prevent moisture on them.
That's a cool quick fix John. Seeing how the newer things I buy aren't as good quality as the older ones it's always great when you can extend the life of older devices
Wow, that worked out super well! I had the same thing happened to a tv remote, but I ended up just installing an app on my phone which controlled it. Basically the volume buttons didn't work often, but everything else was fine!
