I am from New York City, My Dad has a tenant and she stop paying rent since the covid started in March 2020. The whole time she is working. She works in the airport. My Dad is still in the eviction process in court! There are a lot of people using the system!
NYC civil courts are not working for landlords. This has to change, I can afford a non paying tenant for a few months but not for years. I am in the similar situation and courts are no help. Waiting for Gods help.
@@jacobnapkins1155 That's actually not statistically true. Most are upper middle class. Upper class doesn't typically deal with renters; more the buying and selling.
You can either own or rent a place, but either way you're paying. A landlord collects the rents, so they can in turn pay the mortgage, taxes and insurance on the property. Amazing the number of people that don't realize the cost associated in owning a property.
@Bignick Tha'Godfather No I’m not wrong. A bank owned property means the landlord couldn’t pay his mortgage. So it’s the banks now. Taxes, the city owns it. They typically do not continue renting it though. If you want a place, get something small, fix it up and sell it. Keep doing that a few times.
And repaint, fix drywall, replace roof, fix/repair replace plumbing/toilets, replace refrigerator every 15 years, replace furnace, water heater, AC every 10-30 years. It adds up. I'd say all the cap ex/repairs is about 400 a month on average (300-500). Add in the cost of problem tenants - evictions/vandalism/theft of appliances and many landlords are not making much money. The profit margin on real estate is usually about 5-10% - very slim. The best landlords are not the mom and pops usually but the larger multi unit ones or the ones that are already tradesmen/construction guys.

I’m glad she also covered the landlord’s obligations. Landlords have mortgages in which the pay property taxes (if not already included in the mortgage) and other things to include HOA or condo association dues. I’ve seen many landlords get taken advantage by tenants.
I love how the media did a story on this womans situation. Profited off of it, they can find anything but cant help to find resources for her. We just need your story ma'am. Disgusting.
The reporter said that she couldn't get in touch with her (the woman who was being evicted) because her phone was off, but she had her address and had been to her apartment before. It doesn't sound like she tried too hard to get in touch with her. It is like you said....just use her for the story and then conveniently discard her.
I have able-bodied renters who still owe more than 12 months of rent ( after the 14 months assistance from the city of Chula Vista) and still not paying their water bill for 8 months now (billed in the landlord's name ) . They are gaming the system and ruining the finances of the landlord. A very grievous situation is happening too on the other side of the equation.

@@marietta1335 So my parents were together for 20 years and I grew up in a good house. Mom owned her own business doing daycare and my dad worked for the railroad. Everything was great until about 13 when my parents divorced. Nasty divorce and it just continued to get worse from there. My dad ended up in prison for something that shocked me and made my heart fall out of my ass when I found out what he had done. Haven't talked to him since and feels like a death. Lost my grandparents right before that. parents lost everything they worked hard for. I have been in the struggle since. Always ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Learned many hard lessons but it has made me realize what's really important. That I still have my loved ones I'm willing to fight for and if I make it through this I feel very confident that I can handle most of what this life will throw at me.
As a person who just might be asking a hotel for a monthly rent…did you get a better deal on the price since it’s a long term stay? I’m considering how to approach this idea to a local motel. Hope you’re moms ok! 🫶
I am a landlord, I have bills too, I am sorry for folks problems, but if you can't pay the rent I still have to pay my bills on that property. I am far more likely to let you out of a lease at no cost if you can't afford to pay. There are a number of options to help, but honestly, it isn't the landlords responsibility to shoulder the burden, because the bank will foreclose if I don't pay. Besides, every landlord it living in fear of another eviction moratorium and so we are all trying to get the best possible tenants, and a tenant with problems paying now will probably just get worse over time. I as a human feel sorry for them, but no one is going to bail me out as a small landlord with only a few properties trying to house the working folks in my town. Almost two months of my average rent goes into insurance for a single property, plus taxes, management fees, maintenance, vacancy costs, rehab after a move out. If a tenant works with me I will help, but at a certain point my BS meter goes off when I see they are actually just stiffing me and not trying. Then the system takes too long, costs the landlord too much and totally benefits the tenant in my state.
2:50 She set her own rules- if I can pay it this week I will. Or I’ll do next week. So her rental management probably nodded just to pacify her and they did what they normally do. The flip side with rental management alone in an office face to face with a resident. They are concerned about their safety if they tell someone they are kicking her out in 3 days. So they don’t.
And then she says "I didn't have to do that". Well yes she did, because you have an obligation to pay the rent. She makes it seem like she was doing the rental management company a favor. And if her "own rules' happen over and over again, then she cant make it seem like they just gave her one warning and she was out.
If you are a good paying tentant who falls on hard times, speak w/ your LL beforehand. Attempt to make arrangements. Dont just not pay and expect a roof to remain over your head.
I had a landlord just go crazy with greed once his rental property was at capacity with stable people who all got along. No maintenance was covered as it was from the beginning, and the outside went downhill fast. Then once our leases expired, he added 30% on each of our rents, which was way above cost of living. Four out of the five left, and ads were up for a month or more to fill the vacated room/s. I've now spent ~10 months living in my small hatchback car, with no worries at all. Saved $10K of unobligated money.
I think during the eviction moratorium people have so many option to pay their rent without penalties. But where the money went? People on unemployment has extra $200 and make more than people had job.
Yes, the moratorium taught so many to be renting for free tenants. Families with low income tend to be the family with the most children adding to their personal crisis. I work in a busy hospital ER. We see SO MANY single moms with multiple children, no father involved, in crisis for rent, food etc. Maybe more family planning until a stable home environment before having children. My husband and I waited for years to finish our degrees, get a good job, savings, buy a home before we started our family. So many have kids THEN wonder what to do.

And unfortunately, THIS is the attitude of many renters who have trouble paying their rent. I get life happens and times are indeed tough. That said, people are well aware in advance they're not going to be able to pay their rent, so why not advise your landlord well before the first of the month?? It's not only irresponsible and disrespectful when renters don't give advance notice they're having a difficult time, but they only decide to "make promises" to pay well AFTER rent is due or when the landlord says something/gives them notice. The entitlement of deadbeat renters is appalling!

Your conditions don't pay the bills. Everyone has to pay their bills or group up so they can. Landlords have accounts too. Rents must rise due to the risk and cost of possible deadbeat tenants.
Talking to your landlord will get you nowhere if the landlord is experiencing the same financial difficulties you're having. Remember, your landlord is also a person, a citizen subject to the same ("unfair") laws you're subject to. The proper person to ask for help in your situation is the father of your child. Wow! This is a first actually having a landlord telling it how it is instead of just a sad story about a tenant. Taxes and insurance are rising faster then rents and there’s a delay in when rents are able to be raised.
Totally agree. NY is a tenant backed state. They couldn't care any less about us small private landlords. I have a mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance, and other operating costs. Yes we have reserve funds, but they get depleted when tenants don't pay.
@@Eager2BFit and you are just blaming tenants as just not paying. You ever think corporate greed buying up cheap properties forcing you to raise your rents.
@@hellooutthere8956 Who's blaming tenants. I said NY doesn't care about private landlords! The courts would offer tenants 3-12 months extensions of non-payment ( whether they are hardworking good tenants or crappy ones ). They will offer tenants various programs as they should. Meanwhile, I have to hope my mortgage company would provided me with the same. There aren't enough programs ( generally) that help landlords. The exception this time is due to the pandemic! Otherwise...nada!
Shelter should not be a business. Basic shelter is a necessity and every single person requires it to survive. Minimum levels of nutritious food and health care are also requirements for survival. Making money out of food, health care and shelter should be prohibited and should be provided by everyone for everyone on a basic level. No please shut up about laziness. People who don't have the basics necessary for life cannot work. They are harassed, dirty and depressed. Homelessness and hunger does that to people. If you want more than the basics, more space, air conditioning, dish washer, your own purchased private home then you are going to have to work. If you want steak, not beans you have to work. If you need health care, you need it and that's enough. People will work to make their lives more comfortable. When folks absolutely cannot work they should be able to survive anyhow. That's my take on our lousy, greedy system that isn't working. That's what taxes are for, not constant wars and huge military budgets.
I hope she is getting child support. For women out there stop dealing with deadbeats, get married first and build a life with a man you trust before having a child together.
Or maybe they should wait until they can afford to have a child. A coworker of mine said that he and his wife waited eleven years before they had children. Why? Because they didn't want to have children and have no money. That would be stupid.
I had my landlord give me a Pay it or Quit, when my rent check was deposited by them days earlier. Turns out when it was deposited they'd not put down a receipt and they'd put a mark on my record. It was easy to deal with, but then they made the same mistake the month after. Never had this happened and even while unemployed for months I never took help to pay rent and always paid on-time and in full. After the eviction protections lifted, they were quick to try and tell me that I didn't pay when I had proof that I did.
I know is difficult, but there are also people who buy drinks and cigarettes and stuff that don't really need, stimulus money spend in stuff. If the landlord doesn't pay they will be kicked out also and the landlord will loose the property.
Property tax is around 2k a year. They’re not that stressed unless they dont own the house and got a tenant in it to pay off the loan by using their rent money
The real question is why is she making babies when she can’t afford to financially support them. People should own a home, have a plan for a college savings plan in place, savings in the bank, etc. before even THINKING of having a child. Secondly, sorry property owners don’t care about your personal situations. You signed a contract to pay rent on time. You don’t get to live in someone else’s property without paying for it. That’s called stealing. “It’s not fair” she says - sorry hunny you don’t get to steal housing. Grow up, put on your big girl pants and pay your bills on time like every other responsible human on the planet 🙄
This is not really a landlord tenant issue the way some people are trying to make it seem. If you have a job and can’t afford to live any decent place that is a COUNTRY problem. This country is literally failing so many of us both renters and owners… I wonder when we will all stand up together and demand change…? 🤔
Everywhere! Makes me sad 😔 my landlord just told me last week that he wasn't renewing the lease a week before my lease up I pray for people like him as well as people like me ! It has to be better than this
Because women MUST control the narrative. Nobody talks to the men who are homeless destitute and lost everything because of no fault divorce or baby trapper women leeching child support or government benefits.
There should be a law that the landlord cannot increase rental prices more than 25% per year because it is no way cost of living raises (which most people do not receive) can keep up with the drastic market increases.
In other words, let the city tell a business owner how much money they can make because you don’t like it. If you so t like it it, move or buy your own house, then let some families move in and not pay you a dime because they don’t like it. See how that goes
It's all about the money. The government has full control over this situation. But they choose to focus on the money instead of the people. Landlords and tenants are going through hell. But it's the government who takes pleasure and profit in their hell. 🤷♂️
I live in Tampa and I know people who are facing $600 a month rent increases. I know people who have moved back home with their kids. Requirement of making three times the rent puts a modest 1800 one bedroom with a required income of nearly $5,500 a month.
Yes taxes are rising ridiculous and insurance so rents have to keep up, politicians keep complaining about rents but want taxes to be higher so they can put in new trees along the road
@@TheCatholicGirl you mean DEMONCRATS. The dems are DESTROYING this country, but BILLIONS and BILLIONS for the Ukraine. Thanks Uncle Joe and "Dr." Jill.🙄🤮 "LET'S GO BRANDON!"
Blame the government for all the evictions. Banning eviction hurts both landlords and tenants. Instead giving out stimulus checks, government should just pay rent. There will be less eviction now.
If the government starts paying everyone's rent that asks for it, you will have a multitude of freeloaders with their hands out. That's how Welfare got so enormous.
The situation is sad, but where is the sympathy for the landlord that has not received the rent due? The tenant's sickness and poor health are not the fault of the landlord. Landlords shoulder the burden of rent that has not been paid for much longer than 3 days of the notice. The landlord suffers very expensive fees for evictions. Landords would much prefer to have the rent and keep the tenant.
Im 27, I don’t have unprotected sex. I live with my parents in Chicago saving money for my own house.. I don’t have a job currently and im lucky to have a roof above my head but where is the self accountability? Landlords have their own families to feed. . Dont rent if you can’t afford it. There’s alot of government support
I'm not defending anyone, I am well aware of the challenges faced by landlords, but for anyone to say there's a lot of government help shows they know nothing about government help. I've been on both sides, as a landlord, and as a homeless person seeking help and being homeless is a hell of a lot harder and has far fewer avenues for help. Government assistance, assistance from any organization in fact, geared toward people in need basically requires one to be in need for an extended amount of time and then remain in need. Climbing out of a hole is very hard when the people you need to help are handing you a shovel. Both sides of this issue have very unrealistic ideas of each other. Walk in someone else's shoes for a year and you'll come to realize no one is who you think they are or that they have it as easy as you thought. No one.
Not defending this woman and her life decisions. However, no offense but you are a 27 year old adult with no job, living with your parents who support you. *I was living in Texas in a one bedroom. My job had shorted my hours on my paycheck. I went to the leasing office and notified them I would be a few days late on the rent. The leasing manager said ok. Next thing I knew within two days she had filed an eviction. I was shocked. I went to the office and asked her why when she said it was OK for me to pay late. She said it was just policy. In Texas the courts do not charge landlords for filing evictions or pulling them out of court. So there are no repercussions for filing and yanking evictions. I fought the eviction and during the fight I moved out. The courts in Texas are full of republican conservative anti minority judges and they are very pro landlord. The white conservative judge ignored me in court and put all his attention on the landlord who had a lawyer. The case was thrown out when they found out I had moved and the landlord had the keys. This was a dirty thing to do because evictions stay on your record even if they are pulled out of court or you win. Rental companies now check for filed evictions. Not just those upheld by the courts. This is what makes what they did to me particularly evil. They did not care about the longterm ramifications an eviction would have on my rental ability. All they had to do was tell me no and have the money right away and I would have borrowed **it.My** parents would have wired the money. However the leasing office assured me all was fine and thanked me for speaking to them. They knew all along they would file for an eviction. Again all they had to do was tell me. They did not. sorry you have to go through this but your landlord did nothing wrong because it takes time to schedule court date and in case you do not end up paying your rent late, they have to face monetary losses during all these extra time you stayed. that's why always save 3 months of an emergency fund to avoid putting yourself into situations like this!

It happened all the time. I called the Texas workforce and was informed that companies can legally pay TWO WEEKS after payday in Texas. I only make about $2000 a month after taxes and $800 goes to rent. I'm trying really hard to save for a car as all I have right now is a moped. I don't know how long the moped will last but I need to get another year worth out of it before I can upgrade to a car. I want to become a caregiver as we have a big retirement community where I live but most of the caregiver positions out there require you to have a car in order for the elderly to run errands and go to Dr. appointments.
You should be able to find a similar place (private room, shared bath) for a similar price that you’re paying now off of Craigslist (depending on the area of CA).
Dumb question I know, but in other parts of the USA there are so many vacant houses, like Detroit for example. Could these people temporarily move into those houses until the situation improves? I know it will involve a move, but at least they would have a roof over their heads.
What the Detroit City Government won't tell you that if you move into these vacant houses, they will charge you all the past property tax that was not paid on that property. And there are no good paying jobs in Detroit unless in service sector or in government. Their situation won't improve for a very long time.
We feel sorry for both parties. The remnants of the pandemic is still visible. Especially today wherein we here news of job layoffs almost every day. There are those who were laid off during pandemic that haven't got the chance to start over again and still struggling to make a living. Tenants' feelings are absolutely valid, and I think that landlords are doing their best to work it out with them. However, landlords can just do much without compromising the business. People are moving in and out, and if landlords get to meet potential tenants, they should enforce a thorough background check just to make sure that they're not dealing with hard-to-deal-with people. Multiple evictions? Something is not quite right. An action that is made repeatedly is a behavior.
No worth the headaches or cost for repairs and constant removal of personal belongings. To many have ruined section 8 for years!!!!! Now people are demanding section 8 housing. Back in the day, we didn't have an epidemic of single moms in an eviction crisis. Why? We didn't have the feminists espousing and promoting the "I don't need a man culture' and we didn't have the government moving men out of the household with section 8, Wic, and Snap beenies. After the government stepped in, women went wild, foregoing God and the institution of marriage, and expected the consequences of their reckless actions to be taken care of by society. You can either own or rent a place, but either way you're paying. A landlord collects the rents, so they can in turn pay the mortgage, taxes and insurance on the property. Amazing the number of people that don't realize the cost associated in owning a property.
@Bignick Tha'Godfather What a stupid comment. All landlords own the property they are renting. They can hire a management company.

Why do you have spooky music in the background???
I know is difficult, but there are also people who buy drinks and cigarettes and stuff that don't really need, stimulus money spend in stuff. If the landlord doesn't pay they will be kicked out also and the landlord will loose the property.

This is not really a landlord tenant issue the way some people are trying to make it seem. If you have a job and can’t afford to live any decent place that is a COUNTRY problem. This country is literally failing so many of us both renters and owners… I wonder when we will all stand up together and demand change…? 🤔
Better paying jobs, child care, someone has to pay mortgages,so renters should understand that, bottom line it’s not yours
There’s no humanity in our rental system. It seems most Landlords don’t give a crap about people.
And landlords are probably saying the same thing about the tenants.

There should be a law that the landlord cannot increase rental prices more than 25% per year because it is no way cost of living raises (which most people do not receive) can keep up with the drastic market increases.
The max in California is 5% + CPI (up to 10% maximum). I feel like this is fair for landlords and tenants.

Stop passing levies and increasing taxes!!
I live in Tampa and I know people who are facing $600 a month rent increases. I know people who have moved back home with their kids. Requirement of making three times the rent puts a modest 1800 one bedroom with a required income of nearly $5,500 a month.

Why did this lady decide to have a child if she could barely take care of herself
She Probably Gonna Have a Few More Uncle Sam Gonna Get Stuck Supporting Them.
Thank you for showing the landlords perspective
Of course, all these tenants vote "yes" on every sales tax and property tax increase referendums.

You are last one that should talk about self-accountability and give a lecture to people “Don’t rent if you can’t afford it” when your parents protect you from facing the consequences of your own life decisions.

I was blindsided.*
And that why I don’t live in Texas and never will
sorry you have to go through this but your landlord did nothing wrong because it takes time to schedule court date and in case you do not end up paying your rent late, they have to face monetary losses during all these extra time you stayed. that's why always save 3 months of an emergency fund to avoid putting yourself into situations like this!
Had you been late before?
@@constancekang9914 *Texas rushes evictions. And the landlord was wrong for telling me it was ok to pay late and had me thinking it was OK. My parents would have wired the money overnight. But when the landlord told me I had a few extra days I believed them. Never once did they say they would file an eviction. There have been news reports about how easy Texas makes it for landlords to put evictions in court and yank them. They do this by the thousands. It's wrong that they don't even mention to the tenant they will file anyway. It's misleading. It's harsh.*
@@SignedOff402 *No. I had never been late before. This was my first time. In Texas companies are allowed to pay people up to two weeks late before the state will take action. So some companies routinely short paychecks in certain industries and never tell the employee it's on purpose because they are running low on funds. I was working for a staffing agency. It happened all the time. I called the Texas workforce and was informed that companies can legally pay TWO WEEKS after payday in Texas. However under Texas law if you are ONE DAY late on rent they allow landlords the ability to evict and do not charge them to file and rush the evictions when they do file.*

Dumb question I know, but in other parts of the USA there are so many vacant houses, like Detroit for example. Could these people temporarily move into those houses until the situation improves? I know it will involve a move, but at least they would have a roof over their heads.
Drive 2000 miles to where work is on the coasts? Plenty of empty homes in the dead center of the hollowed out nation.
What the Detroit City Government won't tell you that if you move into these vacant houses, they will charge you all the past property tax that was not paid on that property. And there are no good paying jobs in Detroit unless in service sector or in government. Their situation won't improve for a very long time.
Bad tenants don’t want downgrade, roommates, Good ones thinking about them.
Thank you for really and I mean really asking and landlords perspective when tenants are late or fail to pay their rent.
