I think Rob is really holding onto the whole "mentally unwell" identity. It becomes a crutch.
if you watch in the conversation.. the difference between what howie deals with and what rob deals with is one is a DISORDER that is seen across ALL aspects of howies life.... rob has a neurotic trait that revolves around a cellphone in a bed. howie can and will have that obsession surrounding EVERYTHING in his environment - it will impact his ability to function, hold a job, do regular daily tasks, etc - THIS is what makes something a disorder. howie is on medication to help prevent and stop these thoughts combined with the therapy he's done. having a quirky trait is not an illness.
I know! There is so much context here and people just gloss over it and say Howie is being hostile and Rob is getting offended. It’s like yeah? If you had a REAL kink in your brain and then talk to someone that thinks they do and they put a microphone in your face and say “yeah tell me how to fix myself. I’m scared of a cellphone in a bed” when Howie probably at one point couldn’t even sleep for days because he ate something that he thinks gave him a parasite and he’s about to die any second. Howie could basically be Howard Hughes level phobic/OCD but he worked so hard to not let it consume him.
Nah, I’m ocd af and have solved the phone issue by using a bedroom only ipad. Phones are soooo dirty bc they are hot and often carried close to your body so they’re warm and moist and a perfect breeding ground for germs. And it does impair him, he never goes anywhere other than work and he breaks up with girls bc of it. What medicine does Howie take? I’m always looking ways to improve lol

the social cue was that howie had no interest in being there but unfortunately you cant leave the guest alone on a podcast. The host was just trying to relate and make conversation.

8:30 - In my opinion, they had a chance to save it when I feel Jamie could clearly tell how uncomfortable Howie was talking about Mental Health (More-so his own), and changed the subject. Why Rob would then pivot BACK to more talk about OCD and germs is beyond me, lol. Not blaming him. Love these guys. They just didn't click with Mandel.

I agree completely. First time I have ever had to struggle to finish an episode of Not Today Pal. I love this show, but Howie was such a negative vibe and his attempts to be funny were just annoying.

Because howie has actual OCD that ruled his life and would ruin his life if he let it. He's not a new age influencer who wears their mental illness like it's a trophy. It's known that howie doesn't love talking about his OCD. He had a genuinely terrified reaction when he had to ask this awful host to please stop telling him facts about germs on cell phones because he was about to make it a thing for him. If Rob has OCD he'd know talking about it is triggering and sharing facts about germs even more so...

Sorry guys, as a fan of this whole podcast- this was a horrible episode. He seemed like he didn’t want to be there. He kept lecturing and berating you both. Not to mention (like Rob said) - he thought you were kids, as if this was some podcast his agent forced him to do.

People don’t understand that Howie came from a generation where mental health was stigmatized. You were considered weak if you spoke out about it and were told to just deal with it and move on, unlike today, where mental health is taken seriously and you were considered brave to talk about it.
He said two times that he didn't like to talk about his phobia because he uses his work as a distraction and a way to cope with it.

An Episode full of mental patients 😅 We've all had cell phones for 15 - 20 yrs. It's never contributed to my Ill health. I take care of myself and my wife & I get sick once every 3 - 4 years because of our own educated actions. The dirty screen on our phones we touch 24/7 has never done anything. It's in your heads causing these optional problems for yourselves.

@@zeroa69 I can walk around and lick every person's phone i know and not get sick. I hold money in my mouth if i don't have a free hand. I pick food up off the floor and if i can't see hair or large dirt particles on it guess what i do? I eat it. I get sick just like this guy, every 3-4 years (and it's a total 2 or 3 day non-issue with sniffles, the OG coof strain made my back sore for a few days, that's it).
If you sterilize everything your immune system gets no practice and you get was more sick way more often (i know cuz i have leftwing extremist family members who've been drinking that kool-aid since 2020 who are sick all the time, many of which have had strokes, heart attacks and random serious Afib and arrhythmias from the clot shots smh)

There are certain old timers from that time in Hollywood who can get away with bad behavior even if they are no longer relevant. Because no matter how they are as people that makes you disappointed, you can't deny that their body work at one time was incredible. Mandel is just one of those guys who in a town that takes no prisoners has been able to make a really nice life for himself. But I've never met a single person that would really talk about any of his work. You ask most people today they'll know him as the one of the judges who is there to be nice on talent shows to balance out the mean judge. How he manages to get away with being like this on multiple podcasts and people still invite him on is beyond me.

I didn’t think this was that bad honestly. Mostly playful and funny at times. Howie’s a little aggressive in certain parts but always laughs at the end and I actually enjoyed the mutual antagonism with him and Robert.
