Spiritfarer is a project that’s very close to the heart for me and the talented team at Thunder Lotus Games. It’s a positive, colourful and serene adventure about life, grief and compassion, where you guide spirit friends to the afterlife after caring for them in their last moments. It's not only about saying goodbye to characters but reflecting on what they leave after they've gone. It hopes to help us better address and openly discuss the subject of death, a common reality we’re all faced with.
The times we are living through have made the experience of writing music for this project all the more meaningful and I feel like Spiritfarer couldn’t have come at a better moment. The connections and relationships we develop with our friends and families stay with us, we have to treasure them, be more compassionate as individuals and a society, and better learn to say goodbye when the time comes.

as a nurse, i have accompanied patients in their dying moments, some without family. i always feel sad about the fact that they had to go in such a manner, with tubes and wires and IV lines just to keep their heart pumping. this game gave me solace that maybe their spirits are on a sea somewhere, munching on their favorite snack, just being at peace

Yesterday, I lost my husband, he was battling lung disease for a very long time.
In his own way to help me cope and before his passing, he suggested me to play this game as he had played it before.
And as I progress through, I'd imagine that he would also undergo this process, this game gave me a new perspective on how death is portrayed and how souls would pass on to the afterlife.
It hurts until now, to see he's no longer among the living.. but I have to move on, I have to stay strong not only for him but for my friends and loved ones, I don't regret playing this game.. it did help me cope with the loss.
Rest in Peace my beloved Ryan, you're no longer in pain and I hope... wherever you are right now, you're finally free from your burdens and enjoy your time among the stars. 💖🌸

Do you think my mom will be disappointed in me? Disappointed I had to go? I tried! I really tried! But I don't think I did it. I like it when I win! But I couldn't this time. I think it's ok. It's ok to lose sometimes. I really think it is. I am really trying to be brave. But... I'm... I'm really scared. I wish I could be a super hero. And never be afraid. Atul was the truest representation of somebody who wants nothing more than to be with his family. He didn’t worry about how they could cope without him, he didn’t see them as property he’d lost. He just missed them, he wanted to talk about them, and he wanted to feel like he had them back even if only vicariously and for a brief time (last meal). Finally, he spares his niece the pain of having to deliver him to the Everdoor. One of my favourite characters in the whole game.

Spiritfarer gives people Death's perspective. It's funny.. in most games and movies Death is portrayed as this evil and inescapable monster who arrives to kill you, when in actual fact you're already dead when he arrives. He's just there to help you over to the otherside as shown in this game.. He's really a nice guy who takes you into the beyond for rest or to begin your next life.

Out of all the characters, Elana hit me the most. She hated hugs while I loved them and she was cold and bitter while most everyone else was warm and affectionate. She brought the best out of me and pushed me to my limits. I had to try her challenges multiple times because I just couldn't get them done right the first time. Every time I completed them she barely said anything, said I almost made it or something similar, but never straight approval.
When it was her time I took her to the everdoor and she didnt say much the entire time. She preferred the simple silence instead of a strewn out goodbye speech, except, at the end, some of her final words to me.
"I'll just say it. Truly. From teacher to student, I am proud."
Out of everyone I met and went with for their final moments, I straight up bawled and cried at this. Everyone else was always so supportive and happy for me and others, but those words just echoed in my head and heart and I felt so relieved when I read them. Even though she was strict and hated hugs, she was proud of me and I needed that.
She was the last one to go for me, so the first thing I did before leaving and hugging everyone else was to give her spirit a hundred hugs to make up for lost times.
This game is so absolutely stunningly beautiful.

The same happened to me. I felt a greater connection and respect with Elena than with Buck, who has been someone whose mistakes are forgiven on the fandom despite being terribly rude. It is true that he was a distant spirit and that his tasks were demanding; however, she was respectful and did not demand any kind of luxury or request for herself. I put a lot of effort into testing just to see her tone change and even though she didn't throw a party by completing each task, she certainly acknowledged that you did well.
The test of the ring or the coins left me thoughtful for a long time, since I thought that it would unlock some type of conversation depending on your choice; however, you don't get anything special in return and it tells you that despite all that it is worthless or meaningless. Personally, I came to the reflection that it is one who gives meaning to objects and our decisions.
However, I had a very ugly cry when I took her to the bridge, that is because few people in my life have said that they are proud of me... and... well... that a character as distant as she was tells you that and also asks you for a hug, This made me feel really sad about his parting...

Elena was an absolute bitch (both literally and metaphorically), but I've got mad respect for her. She wouldn't have pushed Stella so hard, wouldn't have broken her rule on hugging right before the end, if she didn't care deeply for her. Stella probably reminded her of her old student, Celeste, who worked the hardest out of everyone she had ever met, even if it was all in vain.
So yeah, Elena might've been an emotionally-constipated pain in the rear, but I'll be damned if she wasn't an incredible teacher.
(I also have to respect her gameplay-wise, as she entirely subverts the way most players have been playing up until that point in the game. Even her short "I'm proud of you" subverts how each Spirit usually has a much longer speech to give.)

Alice was the character I felt regret most, I came up to the scene when she stood at the top of the boat but I still didn't find out her favorite food and fully decorate her room yet. So I left her there so I could do that, but when I saw her stand there in the middle of the night or during a rainstorm, I couldn't handle that, I knew I had to let her go. When Stella hug her at the Everdoor and this song was playing, I cried so hard. Thank you so much for making this song TT

Ones that end on a good note, ones that end on a bad note, people you like, people maybe you don’t as much, ones where you don’t even get to say goodbye, and it was overall just a magical experience seeing how each one effects me differently

Strangely, I am the most upset about Buck.
Mostly because I had a friend I admired, though we shared a circle of friends and interests and could have been the best of friends I never got to know him well. Circumstances, life and time; For years we always meant to do stuff, made promises, but we never got to it. Then he passed away suddenly and the chances were gone.
But he left behind all these tracks of what he'd done, said and enjoyed around the internet. Screenshots, comments, discussions, and reviews. I got to know him better after he was gone, when I suddenly made the time. It made the grief of losing a friend I never got the chance to know all the harder.
We get to know Buck and what he loves and he sends us on adventures. But we never get to say goodbye or truly connect, because he was already gone.

As someone who never lost anyone of major significance in my life, besides my grandparents (All but one of them are now deceased,) this game still hits hard.
I think it's because I imagine myself in the positions of the characters, or more so, it reminds me that one day I will have to say good bye to my own loved ones, be it my parents, my sister, my cousins, either at their deathbed or on my own.
Oh, how I fear those days. For me its not death itself that I fear; in my case, I'm terrified of leaving those who need me behind.

Each of us can make an action to impact another's future.
Each of us can help and care for those around us no matter the quality of the person.

A game that can reliably make me cry is a game that is to be celebrated in my eyes because it is clearly doing something right to get me that emotionally engaged with it.

Why Astrid. Hardest goodbye of my ENTIRE LIFE. i cried my eyeballs out. Listening to this just made me remember of the times with Astrid. why'd she have to leave so suddenly. Why... See this is why you dont get attached to game characters...

Spiritfarer has accomplished what I thought was going to be impossible, and made me genuinely attached to a fictional character. I have never experienced tragedy in my life, not once, and I'm grateful for that, but I also feel like I am lacking in a part of what makes a lot of people human, and that's probably loss. This game has surprisingly, allowed me to feel loss.

All these comments of joy and loss and healing and pain are so beautiful. I had to put down my dog a few weeks ago. She was the best friend i ever had and im still hurting in a way i have never experienced before. But you creating this piece makes it a tiny bit easier to let go. Thank you for doing what you do thank you.

This score really hits it right in the feels. It's so beautiful, yet I don't want to hear it as often in the game, cause it means you have to let someone go. But when the time comes, the soothing tunes of this piece really makes the moment worth it, even tho it's sad to say goodbye.

Tbh i was fine over the first 4 departures including alice even though it was the saddest one. But when i had to send gustav off i wasnt expecting to be crying BUCKETS of tears. Tears couldnt stop flowing down.
    And then it hit me.
The only reason i was fine at the start was bc i know there would be more guests along the way, but when i had to say goodbye to him it hit me that im reahing the end. I have no more people to fetch. And im beginning to feel the loneliness everytime a guest leaves. Since then everytime i had to send someone off i’d be floored, drowning in my own tears bc the loneliness i felt on the boat felt surreal. Spiritfarer really messes with my feelings more than i thought jt would.

The Everdoor scene always makes me hopeful that their not just letting go of their former lives. Their embracing the possibility of a new one somewhere else The Ever World is a place where Lost Spirits learn to accept their passing and live on a little longer until the end finally happens. When Stella sees the Ghostly images of her family and friends on the ship one last time, it always makes me think their telling her. "It's your turn, take your time, but know we can't wait to see you soon." It's like their spirit form is their next body in the next life they'll have and they'll be reborn as that creature like Buck was.

when it was Alice's time to go that hit hard and did make me cry which can be difficult especially for a game thats why i think this game is such a great one because of how it makes you realise nothing stays forever and that it could go when you least expect it especially with alice and that you had to walk her to the small boat was what made me get to the tipping point then her last dialogue that was the last push and i cried it truly shows us that you will have to say goodbye to someone at some point even if you dont want to

The last words of every Spirit (I forgot Atul's and it's not on the wiki, and Lily doesn't have any)
Gwen: Thank you, Stella. Thank you for bringing me here, even if you didn't want to. Thank you for kicking my butt, and shaking my ego. Don't forget that I've loved you as much as I could. Goodbye, my friend. See you there.
Summer: I'm so proud of you, Stella. And I know Rose would be, too. Thank you for everything.
Alice: Maybe Eugene will... .... When you see your father, tell him about the trees, won't you? I'm sure he'll be excited to come with us next year.
Astrid: Is it all gone already? I don't see much anymore... You're still here with me, aren't you? You're still here, Stella? Don't you forget about me, please. I don't care about anyone else! But you, you don't forget about me, I'm telling you! I'll come back and haunt you if you do! I can feel it coming. Goodbye, Stella. Just follow your heart and keep smiling.
Giovanni: I know I shouldn't leave so soon. Believe me, I wish I could've stayed longer. Right here with you, Peanut. Promise me you'll take care of Astrid when I'm gone, ok? And don't miss me too much, will you? I've never deserved you anyway... But I've loved you, and that won't stop even if I'm not around anymore. The ones who really love you never really leave you, you know. Life is amazing, isn't it? A whirlwind, a tremor, a flickering flame! I've tried so much to live to the fullest. I regret nothing. Nothing but leaving Astrid. Nothing but leaving you, Stella. I wish I could've seen you grow up even more, but here we are. Alright, pour yourself one for me, will you? Ciao, bella.
Gustav: Oh, we're here! Well, well, now, Stella. Ozymandias beckons. Let's go.
Bruce & Mickey: Let's go see what everyone has been raving about. I'll send you a postcard, Kid.
Beverly: You were... Always there... There... There for me... Stella. Goodbye... sweet pea.
Stanley: I feel strange. I feel cold. I wish Mom was here. And Dad. But you are here, big hat. I really like you. I hope it's like falling asleep.
Buck: Stella! Look... I... I have something to tell you. Now that there are only the two of us in here. You might've guessed already, but... Yeah, I can't really go through the Everdoor. It's really hard to explain. My guess would be that... I've already been through it? In a weird, strange way? See what I mean? Sorry to break it to you, but... I don't think there is more to it. You. Me. Us. This world. Listen, I really don't want to push you towards it! Frack, no! But, you know, I think you... Should try accepting your fate? I'm really not one to give you advice, far from it... Funny thing, I don't even know if I accepted it myself. My presence here might give us a clue. ... That being said, if you say, I'll try to entertain you to the best of my abilities! But there is not much I can do, you know. As if... as if I were somehow limited. As if an invisible barrier existed in me, too. I kinda feel it, you know. Sorry, Commander. I'm really sorry.
Elena: I've been thinking. When we get there. Maybe, just maybe. We can hug. We'll see how I feel. This is the only time I will let you. Come on.
Jackie: Yeah, okay. We're there. I, huh... Just... Yeah, just bring it in." ... "See ya on the other side, Stellers. Or not.
Daria: You see it now, do you not? My transparency. My lack of substance. I am not getting better. Since the storm... Every day, ribbons of me falling into oblivion. I have lost too much. I am incomplete beyond repair. Below the critical mass required for a continued existence. Echoes of echoes can only last so long. ... Goodbye, Stella.
