  • On October 25, 1956, one of Dover's largest retailers went up in flames. Siegel's Department Store was in the midst of a legal fight to stay open on Sundays when the building caught fire and was destroyed. It would be rebuilt and was a staple of Dover's north end until 1984, when it closed. In This Day in Dover History, we look back at the fire that razed Siegel's. This story was also included in the City of Dover's weekly podcast, Dover Download, this week. For more on the Dover Download podcast, see bit.ly/3zaMHEc.

I'll bet those big plate glass windows were replaced by Atlas Glass & Mirror Co. If not in 1958, I'm sure subsequent replacements were handled by Atlas.

I didn't know about the Siegel's fire of 1956 (or that the building was rebuilt and reopened in 1958).
Great job in bringing us more Dover history.
