I'm going to make a habit of watching this video every 6 months or so to remember what pure unadulterated creativity looks like. What an incredible performance.
RIP Chick! It's such a bitter sweet time listening to all of the beautiful music and performances he left us! This collaboration, with Bobby McFerrin was one that went on for a while with beautiful results. Bobby's take here on 'Straight, No Chaser' is totally unique, and surely the fastest tempo ever! Every time here is amazing, and clearly everyone playing is in a peak performance and total enjoyment mode. Just amazing!
Thank you for mentionih him, I was searching for it in the comments! He's unfortunately the only from this concert I've personally seen live and an amazing bass player. I'm devastated by the loss of Chick like everyone in the music community but this abundance of concert material on here has been a great solace and I've discovered so many amazing videos I had not seen before. Thanks for helping keep his music alive, he may have returned to forever, but we're never giving up his music as long as we are here.
Awesome concert! I saw them couple of years ago. Bobby is probably the greatest genius alive on earth! What a musician!!! This wonderful man is a pure genius. Simply pure genius.
Best performance of Footprints, I have ever heard. But you have to know Footprints, to recognise everything they do. All four are top-musicians, and know exactly what they do. Hundreds of variations and tricks of Latin-rhythms pass by, perfectly performed by players, who really love it. AND they listen to each other all the time, and with so much fun. This really is, what music is all about..
so anyway, bassists...? !!!.....that bit at 4:22....that groove is exactly what Chick and we pianists want just like that. thanks in advance for your diligence. You can even lip read Chick..at 6:28 "that BASS!! You should have played the BASS!!" and Bobby says "THANK you Chick".. and then he's showing Avishai how to set himself free whilst busting a blues solo at warp speed. Amazing.
f u!!! it is really hard to comprehand. not like some 4 chord progression bullshit. there amazing prog rock and classic rock musicians but dont you disrespect the musicality of jazz
+ערן קרן As a trumpet player, I can tell you that even some of the "greats" in jazz like Louis Armstrong used to play the wrong notes, sometimes. That's just the nature of jazz, where you don't have to be a good musician. That's not to say there aren't good musicians who play jazz. Bobby McFerrin is a fantastic musician. When he throws the rules out while playing jazz, though, it sounds terrible. It's unavoidable.
Im not talking about the notes only, sure u van mess up there but a true and experienced musician, will not mess up a lot, mabye he will change the melody a bit cause as a Jazz man myself some of the standards have a pretty boring melody, but a harmony that u can do what ever u want on.
That is incorrect. The human ear is predisposed to calling things like a perfect fourth, consonant, and an augmented fourth, dissonant. If you study music theory and you couple that with an understanding of the human ear, you begin to see why it is rightly said that jazz musicians do many things incorrectly. Play it all you like, of course, but the only reason you say it sounds good is because of your deliberated opinion, and your views in politics may even come into play there. Factually, however, (most) jazz does not sound good. You are *not* supposed to do "whatever you want" on a harmony. Dissonance has its purpose, of course, like for orchestrated pieces with plays or movies where you want the audience to feel tension, but that precisely illustrates how we know that humans do not naturally like dissonance.
Caleb, why play the semi-educated idiot? Perhaps you should stick with 18th century music. Nothing more troublesome there than an occasional dim 7th chord to give all those retroactively historically sheltered audiences the horrors. Context - explore it.
