We are very excited about your partnership with the open Rick but let's be honest your golf bidder challenge with Pete is the content we're all looking forward to the most !!
With the new boom of RUclipsrs challenging each other to scrambles, they should get their team together and go after big RUclips channels and collab 🤙🏼
Re-socks rule. I can remember whilst paying green fee in pro shop….guy at till declared ‘’ we’re long socks’’…my buddy and I both had a pair in the car. (Navy blue for both of us) .Changed into our long socks. Guy then declared ..”we’re white long socks only “!!!. Ironically, they had the largest stock of white long socks for sale ever witnessed! , at just £10 a pair!!! …. My thinned seven iron into the 18th green , landing on the terrace, causing havoc amongst the folk enjoying their larger shandy’s, was slightly more palatable!!
Since you are going to Augusta I hope that you can film a collaboration with the Bryan bros at their course. It’s only about an hour drive east of Augusta
a lot of my friends have recently just got into golf, I think there should be a 'starter package' membership as standard at every golf club if you don't have a handicap. people who are thinking about playing golf or just started playing golf don't want to pay upwards of £900 on something they might not want to keep doing. golf needs to be more accessible to everyone.
Our golf club has just extended out the ‘intermediate bracket’ further to as you say, encourage younger people to join. The argument is a 28 year old for example might earn the same if not more than a member who is mid 50s however it isn’t as black and white as that. The likelihood is they have bigger outgoings / priorities at that stage of their lives with young families, mortgages etc. So trying to still entice them to be a member is difficult but they are the future of the club..
Rick just on the Golf Club membership question you asked near the end. My club in Aust is junior membership until 18 then it’s full membership until 60, then they have Veteran membership. The issue we see is that people who work struggle to get a tee time some times because the veterans who pay half or less of the full membership fee are playing 3-4 days a week meaning people who work can sometimes struggle to get weekend tee times…
I listened to the club house pod and enjoyed it, Sophie is awesome. I tried listening to this pod audio only. I always watched the main pod on YT. Just listening I missed you guys. I feel like I sit at the table next to Matt. I think that’s a compliment to the main pod. Can’t wait for Golf Bidder challenge
A lot of our country golf clubs in North Quenslland, Australia the club fees are a quarter of the price to be a member and then you get a discount on green fees. So you get to keep your handicap but only pay when you play. Keep the awesome golf world chat exciting and escalating🍻👍🏻🙃
I always watch your podcast on the TV and then like and comment via my IPad, firstly I will listen to the new Friday Podcast on my iPad. The thumbnail descriptions in Apple podcast and you tube are appear to be slightly different which is confusing. Lastly the way I am watching and commenting and likeing etc are these still valid in you analytics don’t want you missing out 👍
I didn’t join a golf club until I retired because I would not play enough to get the value from the fees. I now do get more than enough value but purposely avoid weekends to allow working members to play. I do not mind guests playing with members but personally do not like societies. Too many people leading to slow play, several tee times taken up, rules often not followed etc. My feeling is that societies often want the advantages of club golf without paying for membership. Controversial I know, expecting flack coming in but my opinion nevertheless.
Woodhall Spa is such a gem, Home of English Golf you didnt mention... I think the Hotchkin is very similar to Ganton in North Yorkshire. Both those courses don't tend to get much easier with sensible pins! Some extremely reasonably priced overnight stay golf trips for Woodhall Spa as well.
A 21 year old whos either still a university student or first / second year into their career having to pay the same amount as someone who’s close to retirement, at the top of their pay scale, and could very easily have paid off their house already is WILD and might be the single dumbest thing I’ve heard either of you say. On a more positive note big fan of the pod and the other channel, the only podcast I listen to every episode of 👌 cheers from Canada
I'd love to see Rick play a one man scramble to see what he could score. Play 2 balls, pick the best one, hit another 2 shots .....etc, finishing with 2 chances to put out.
It's incredibly hard to play golf as a parent. Add in the fact that the local course has "leagues" four nights a week. You can't squeeze in 9 after work. Then between weekend tournaments, kids activities and family activities on the weekend, there's just no chance for golf. THIS is the reason driving ranges and simulators are so popular.
There is a senior price at our place, we're members of Fife golf trust in Scotland who get a chance to play 7 courses. Senior price is back to being same as under 30s
Loving the podcast this week. Is there any plans for more colabs with the bob does sports guys? The series last year was up there with the favourite youtube golf videos I’ve seen
The hotckins pins where like that to protect the greens I was there 3 weeks ago. The ground staff told us the pins are tucked against the edge to protect them.
May I make a suggestion. You could approach a golf club, where they could present you with an easy pin and a difficult pin, once you are within 100 yards you can nominate the pin you are going for. Target score. Level par to 5 over. My course would be ideal.
The thing about the guest though is that 3 of the 4 people are members so its not even preventing a member from golfing unless a random old guy wants to join these other 3 for some reason.
So I'm a member of a golf course as well. My thoughts on the members-only times: I feel like those should be tee times that require a member, not just members-only. I say that because, like my club, I can only bring one guest. I am taking that tee time slot, whether it is just me or me and my guest. That’s how I feel like the rule was initially set up. Because, like the guy said, they have to go to another course to play with the one person who isn’t a member. So now three members don’t get to play in their course because another member.
Regarding the questions 1 - the members would be going out as a 3 ball so what’s the big deal of signing in a guest filling up the tee time 🤷🏻♂️ 2 - I work so won’t go full membership until I retire. I’ve been with Playmore but courses nearby have come out of the scheme so currently I’m on a clubs flexi scheme. But the Playmore model of home and away points is a very good one for the golfer. Not sure how beneficial it is for the club though (I’m not privy to that info)
For the most part, in America, almost all golf courses lower the price for Senior membership. At my home course it's $500 a year for Junior 21 and under. $1300 a year for age 22 to 54 and $1000 for 55 and over. This is for a 36 hole facility in Washington state.
Like the talk about memberships, in my opinion memberships are all wrong in this country as working age people have to pay a lot for a membership but may only have time to play once a week, or weekends only, whilst seniors are cheaper and can play any time and day. I have now gone to having an iGolf membership and playing where ever I can book a tee time to save the costs. Plus, playing the same course week in week out gets a bit boring.
I get what you guys are saying about membership prices, but a lot of people in their late 20s and early 30s are only just getting on the housing ladder and it's not realistic to be able to expect them to be able to pay a mortgage and a full-price golf club membership. Someone in their 50s has had an extra 20+ years of earnings and has probably paid off a decent chunk of their mortgage, so it's fair to assume they might have a bit more disposable income. I know you could say that's tough luck and maybe the answer for younger people is just to pay-and-play, but if clubs want to attract younger members they probably have to offer a sliding scale based on age.
I played as a guest at a club in the monthly medal and despite having a handicap and winning the comp, I got nothing because I was a member of another club. It was essentially just a handicap round despite paying comp fees. Lots of clubs are folding under financial pressure in Australia and I think they need to be more broad minded.
The “kids, how do we find the time” is why colt fees often creep up to the 30-35 mark as they know they will only see members of the 25-35 age bracket once a month if they have kids.
On the member costs, they finally got to what I was thinking. Seniors get to play WAAAAY more golf than a younger person that has smaller kids and work. So the playing "value" is probably similar.
Thoughts on a Ryder cup style competition put on between best of the PGA and LIV every 2 years?! Drives the division in golf even further but would surely be one hell of a few days
Clubs near me have increasingly graded fees throughout adult life. I agree with the junior prices of course, but I'm not sure why I should pay far more as a 50 year old than a 35 year old for the same service. Players in their twenties pay 500. 30s, 800 and me.... would be 1050. I have a mortgage and children. The 30 year old may have neither. I dont want to subsidise them....
Fair play to you doing the photo with Donald Trump. As you said, you didn't want to be rude, which is the most important thing. Can't wait for the GolfBidder Challenge with Pete!
Rules should be followed but they can also easily be changed. My club allows members to book tee times 10 days in advance. Non-members can only book tee times 7 days in advance. This gives members preferential treatment and access to the best tee times while still bringing in revenue from the non-members. The bottom line is: the more money a club brings in from non-members the lower they can make the member fees. Operating a golf course has a minimum cost. The expense not covered by non-members must be passed on to members or the course closes. Some local clubs have lower fees but pack in as many tee times as possible and you pay extra for snacks. Other clubs space out the tee times and have "free" snacks but charge twice as much for green fees. We also have member-only, no-guest clubs. Nothing is free. Fortunately, we have many clubs with many different approaches. Everybody can choose the type of club they like. If you don't like a club, then join a different one (or go skinny boating).
Older members play more golf because most of them are retired. Plus our club has extra comps for seniors. That’s why they should pay more. Plus the points you guys made.
My goodness, it's ok to get a picture with a past president of the U.S. Does it have to mean more than just you got in a picture with a past president? That's cool, regardless of what your political stance is. People need to relax and get along.
I guess different pricing by age is a UK thing. Here in the states its the same price no matter your age, don't like it? Then go away. Really turns a lot of younger people off from the game.
Intermediate members (ie those with reduced fees) is up to age 35 at our course which i think is roo late. At rhe other end of the acale members over 80 get a reduction which i dont agree with as they play more golf than any other members

Full price for a 21 year old is ridiculous Rick 😂 There’s a lready not enough younger players joining golf clubs. Increasing the price to full price will mean there’s even less. The main demographic of any golf course is males who are near retirement or retired, so of course their membership should be higher (because they will 100% be more willing to pay it)

I think things will be fine at the Masters between the Tour pros and the defectors. The story is getting old. I think most Tour players have accepted what is going on. Life is different now. I think once Rory breaks this major barrier down and gets a 5th title he will go onto win many more surpassing the likes of Faldo, Palmer etc.
I’d love to see it, stiff competition out there, he’s carding too many birdies and can’t rely on the putter.
