Perfect!!! I had the same error about the elements that cannot be used in a pattern brush, even after expand them. So I used the "merge" function in the heads and it worked. I created my pattern brush. Thank you so much for this tutorial! It was very helpful!!
Lovely :D the error could potentially come from the opacities within the gradient. If one the colors in the gradient has less than 100% opacity, then there could be an error when expanding the phosphate head.
dude... i have been looking for AI training for months and you taught me more than what people use to teach in webinar. Thank you. All the best for the channel... one more subscriber here!
Hi Jonathan, glad I can help! Which organ would you like to learn. Many researchers have requested advance medical illustration, so I am planning to develop these tutorials.
This was immensely helpful. I've used PPt in the past to make figures but now that I have illustrator, there is no going back. Thank you so much for this!
Hi Paul. It is my pleasure knowing the tutorial has helped you! Thank you for your feedback. Is there more you'd like to learn about Illustrator for graphical abstracts? I am developing a crash course for researchers during the COVID-19 lockdown.
@@DrawBioMed Thank you for the quick response and am absolutely loving the above brush technique. Would you be able to provide instruction on how to draw an epithelial membrane using this same brush technique? Been playing around with it myself by making individual epithelial cells but having trouble figuring out the best way to go about making an actual new brush. I work with the gut and trying to draw intestinal villi. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Hello!! Great video! I'm very interested in your master of scientific illustration. How important is blender? Is it more important to draw by hand or would we learn more inormatics design? I would be more interested in videos like this one, thank you!!
Hello Valero! My program Master of Scientific Illustration in Maastricht, Netherlands focuses more on drawing by hand and traditional techniques. They also teaches digital media and a lot of our thesis was done digitally. Than you for your kind feedback, I will upload the tutorials for graphic abstracts in the fallowing week. Stay tuned!
Hi, thank you, it is a very good tutorial and inspiring video. I started to use Adobe Illustrator for creating models. I did the same for the lipid bilayer creation, but at the end when I apply as a brush, space appear between each of the phospholipid molecules, but in your video there are no space between them, they look like totally adjacent to each other. Do you have an idea about my issue?
Hi Elek, thank you for reaching out to me! Most likely the tip of your lipid chain is out of the boundary of the phosphate head. An example for the fix is in the link below. Let me know if this solution works :) drive.google.com/file/d/1qTvJ2_Ac2K3HXspOCju_A-82kHYjLIBz/view?usp=sharing
hi,Doctor Jon ,thank you for your tutorial i want to know:why do we have to expand the gradient before pattern brush, I try find the answer, but failed.
Because pattern brush does not support any special effects in their unit. You can only use paths and objects in the unit. Gradient is a special effect so it is not compatible with pattern brush. PS. I am not a Doctor ;) just call me Jon is fine.
I am getting the same error when I try to apply the pattern brush ("The selected artwork contains an element that cannot be used in a pattern brush"), even though I have in fact expanded the lipid heads like you said. Furthermore, when I group the objects together, it seems that the lipid heads and tails don't indicate the blue boxes like in your figure at 6:50, does this play a role in my issue? Can you help me in any other way?
I have fixed it in a different way. However, I found that the gradient of the membrane did not show up in my exported file (I think it is because the color profile is set to RGB), how can I fix this?
I have googled the issue (often called gradient bends) and I cannot wrap my head around it. Have you had issues exporting a file (eg PNG or JPEG) that contained gradients, i.e. the gradients were not there or shown as bends?
@@BloodDiamonddd Hi, without screenshot I can only make assumptions. It could be that when you expend the phospholipid you chose to expand it to "mesh" instead of "steps". To really take a look at it I have to have the screenshot. You can send it to my email jon@sciencevisionary.com

If you wanted to animate this lipid bilayer would you use Adobe Character Animator (Ch) or Adobe Animate An?
I would suggest After Effect
