Nice job on the handle and sheath. I've had a Western bowie since I was a teenager. I used it a lot for a lot of years. It held up well. I always thought about thinning out the handle and cutting the back of the gard off. Never did. I don't use it much anymore. Too many other knives need using.

Not much of a fan of the strap across the guard that holds knives in place. I usually cut them off, put 2 holes about 1/2-3/4” above the guard, on both sides of handle. Put a 6-8” piece of paracord through holes, around handle & tie a square knot. Others may not approve but it works for me. To each their own 👍🏻. The sheath is awesome! Nice W49. Very quick in the hand. The W49 is indeed a superb classic design, and a more comfortable handle profile like yours can make a significant difference in its usability.
Beautiful work, brother. I too modified my 1970 W49 that I inherited from my grandfather. Simply reduced the guard to a more practical size and had a custom leather sheath made for it. Would love to see you running that Bowie through the paces down by the river, or up in the mountains.

Some of the 19th century fighting styles would have you hold the knife so the edge was facing upwards when it was extended; the idea was that you would stab forward and slash upwards, effectively disemboweling your opponent. Maybe the previous owner was into old-school knife-fighting manuals? Just a theory.
