Woodturning and Carving a Dragon Bowl

- Woodturning a Dragon Bowl from the same wood used in the Celtic Knot Bowl. Turning, using resin in the bowl bottom, and carving the scales, all in this video. It’s rough and refined, rugged and full of character. Worthy of a battle tested dragon.

I love listening to you talk. Your speech brings to mind Bob Ross- not because of the words you say, but because of the tone behind them. Bob had a rare kind of peace in his voice. It was the peace born of chaos, love born of hate, happiness born of misery. Thanks so much for sharing what you do and who you are with us.
I've though about this comment, and how to respond, Jonathan...maybe I shouldn't...but let me just say this: Thank you for hearing me, and I'm truly humbled by your insight.
I agree wholeheartedly
Very relaxing to listen too wholeheartedly agree x
yeah, without looking at any comments I was going to say; he's got a golden voice! The beginning of this video sounds like the beginning of a movie, like the Big Lebowski or one of that nature. I was almost expecting him to go on with something like "it all started nine years ago, in a small town in Indiana.. back then life was simple... we had it good, we took things for granted... that was until the flood of '89 came..." Really sent me to another place! lol (before I realized he was sort of doing that on purpose) :P
Dragnet intro was amusing. Your hand carving work is exceptional - I always marvel at how easy you make that look. Finished product looks good - rough & refined as advertised.
Thank you very much!😊
Hey Rod, absolutely love what you did with this bowl. Love the fact that you went with the wood and didn’t fight it. Such a BEAUTIFUL Piece.
Can’t wait to see more. Such a fan. (Make sure to spend more time with your wife, us wive’s deserve our hubby’s time too) (haha) 💜📐💜
Thanks very much! haha! I think she might be glad to have me out of the house! (not really...she's so supportive though! 😊)
Hi Rod,
It is always a pleasure to see the notification of a new video from you, it starts my weekends off so wonderfully! Listening to you, and seeing you work and your work, it just makes my happy!
This bowl is wonderful, because of it`s flaws. The world is flawed and we are all flawed as well. Too many people strive for perfection, but as you say, flaws add character, we should all embrace our flaws a bit more.
Take care and keep turning! And thanks for those nice words about my work :)
Best regards
Lars
Thank you Lars, I appreciate your thoughts! It was my pleasure to show your work 😊
President R Humphrey, let the campaign begin. Best wishes from the land of the Welsh dragon. I salute you.
😊Thank you very much! Salute returned!
I'm a retired disabled woman who watches a lot of wood turning videos. I don't know why I just do. They relax me I guess. I am only subscribed to two channels and yours is one. I love your work and your sense of humor. Beautiful art. Know that someone in St Louis appreciates you. And yes you sound Dashiell Hammett-y.
Thank you, I appreciate that, and I'm honored to be one of the two! You are appreciated as well, Theresa.
The intro killed me! Ha! Reminded me of William Conrad opening "Gunsmoke" on the radio... "I'm that man, Matt Dillon, United States Marshall - - the first man they look for and the last they want to meed. It's a chancy job, and it makes a man watchful...and a little lonely."
hahaha! Too funny! I like your idea too though.... 😝
I thought it was his first video and was doing an intro or trailer for the channel........
Well done. My ancestry is Celtic (Scotland), so I very much appreciate seeing this type of design. I've incorporated Celtic symbolism in my own woodworking. Your patience and focus are exceptional in an age of instant gratification and self-entitlement. Work safe.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Your work always amazes me. I wondered how you were going to come to grips with the tear out but I never expected you to work with it by recognising the wood's stubbornness and highlighting it by giving it that "I've experienced life" look on the outside. To me, it seems you are making a tribute to the wood itself--as if it were still alive. You totally blew my mind. As I've said before I respect you as a master craftsman, but this takes you to a whole new level of respect for me.
Andrew, that really means a lot to me! Thank you so much!!
The dulcet tones of Mr Humphrey are always part of the charm that make your videos great! 52k and counting.
Thanks very much! 😊
I am older, so I say you sound like a RADIO star who had a mystery show. The Shadow. Why this is so good, is because he began each program with. “ the shadow knows” and do you ever! You were the first one I subscribed to, and I enjoy every minute. I don’t do wood, I do beads and fiber. The concept of bringing forth something where nothing like it was. I have to work at it, sometimes, often, change direction and see how to
Went back in your video history & found this. Very nice. Carving all those scales took true patience and dedication. Great job.
One solution I've found for porous wood and tear out is to use a curved scraper. This allows you to work with the grain. It's a lot of extra work, but the results are more reliable and satisfying.
Love the dragon design. The scales are awesome! Thanks for posting.
This is gorgeous
Thanks very much! 😊
And I like the way you've embraced the tear-outs and used them in the scales to get that rough look. This and your Celtic Knotwork bowl are really cool!!
Thank you Katherine, I appreciate that!
I think that is a beautiful bowl. I love the carving of the scales. The wood is so pretty.
Love this one as much as your Celtic knot and all your stuff. You really know how to listen to what the wood is saying. Thank you for your service bless you.
Thank you very much, Theresa!
I love how you did this bowl. It doesn't have to be perfectly smooth and shiny to be beautiful and this is a beautiful piece of art. Love it. Take care and God Bless.
Beautifully highlighted imperfections. Great work as always buddy. 👊👊
Thank you very much!
Love it when you just keep fighting until you win. The fight is not over until the winner says it is! It turned out great!
You got that right! Thank you!
The first part of the video reminded me of your video when you read that beautiful poem to us. Your voice is so comforting and soothing to me. So nice. Not all of your videos are commented by you so I always appreciate with your comments. Especially about the assortment of wood you are working with. Or the resin. And also the sketches which then turn into beautiful pieces of art. This dragon bowl is my favorite right before the celtic knot bowl. This may be due to the fact that my heart lies always in Scotland.
I absolutely LOVE this bowl!!! Since my favorite mystical creature and Chinese birth year are both dragon.... this really touches me deeply. I also love hearing you speak!
Thanks very much. We have those things in common! You're very kind 😊
The commentary in the beginning was absolutely perfect. Yet another great piece of work!
Thank you very much!😊
Love, love, love it I'm from Wales in the UK and on our flag is the Welsh dragon and I am proud to be Welsh so thank you so much for sharing this bowl it is awesome 🇬🇧💯👏🏻💯🇬🇧
Thank you very much! I've always thought your flag was amazing! You should be proud, such a rich and storied history...
Love it. Your comentary makes your video so interesting. It highlights your artistry.
Rod I love listening to your voice it is awesome and the work you do is always stunning. Simplify. Always be yourself.
Thanks very much! 😊
I actually enjoyed the Philip Marlowe style introduction being a Raymond Chandler fan.
As for your work, it keeps being more and more interesting.
This is truly a work of art.
Thank you for sharing!
I sure appreciate that! Thank you!
I learned and continue to learn how not to struggle through a thing. How to accept and be patient and tolerant with life. As soon as I think I’m in the drivers seat, life has a way of throwing me a curve ball. Accept it, accentuate the flaws. Getting better doesn’t mean beating everything into my will. allowing the challenge to have its work complete and still make a thing of beauty, that’s a win. Good job.
There is so much wisdom in your comment! Perfectly stated. Thank you very much! 👍👍
Great video Top. As a Vietnam vet thankIs for your service and thanks for your videos. I am a new subscriber and from what I have seen I will continue to be one for a long time. Your videos are very informative and the appreciation for your subscribers ads a lot to it. I have just retired for 8 years in the Mid-East working for CENTCOM doing building maintenance. I am building our retirement home south of Tallahassee Florida. I have worked in residential construction for 46 years and I have done a lot of wood working.36 years ago we lived in the mountains of I am going to have a nice shop for my retirement and have purchased a Grizzly lathe and I am a.nxious to start using it but right now I am busy with building the house. Thanks again
Thank you for your service as well, Dave! In Vietnam and with your service with CENTCOM. I wish you fair winds and following seas in your retirement. And... Welcome to my channel, I appreciate your subscription very much. You must be excited and looking forward to that new shop (and house, but we must prioritize, lol).
@@RHumphrey P.S, The first commander I had at CENTCOM was General Mad Dog. Super guy!!!
I don’t know how I missed this when you posted it as I’ve been subscribed to your channel for quite a while, long before this was posted. Incredible piece. I love that you accentuated the flaws of the wood and the trouble you had with the piece. I think it helps tell the story of the wood and the work that went into it.
Yeah, the notification bell system on RUclips is faulty. there are times my wife doesn't get the notifications, so I know it must be a widespread problem. I appreciate you finding and watching it though, Scott! Thank you!
I'm a subscriber for one reason. Your passion and love of your work. You have a wonderful talent, and you have a way of seeing details. You are a marvelous woodworker, and I am proud to have you as a brother Marine. Semper Fidelis.
You made my day just now, Clyde! Thank you so much my brother, Semper Fi
your skill, being able to watch and relax and appreciate your skill, is a real treat, i live and work in a city, most of the work i do is digital, i get to work with lovely people and i come home and make music. none of these things can be held in my hands to say “i made this” which is something i really miss.
Funny thing, my friend, is that I often wish I could make music...
R Humphrey it’s never too late! a little banjo or ukulele could be a nice project.
That is absolutely amazing. Greetings from an old Vietnam Navy Veteran.
Thank you very much! Welcome home, brother, and thanks for your service!
Very nice! The character of the would lends itself to the carved dragon scales. Beautiful routed dragon design as well. Absolutly love your work. I've spent hours over the last week watching your older videos and I'm hooked. Thanks again for sharing your amazing talent and artistry.
I think I Love it. Our brains seem to work in the same way, Oh Hey lets do this ! and then we are obligated to finish it ! LOL What were we thinking ? but the out come of each of those projects are Awesome !
Doug
Thank you Doug! So true, happy creative thoughts are so much easier than the actual work involved... hahaha, well said! 😁
I love listening to you and see something beautyful come into existence. Helps me through times of depression and allways cheers me up. Thank you
Thank you Elisabeth, I appreciate that and am so glad you find something you need through my work! 😊
@@RHumphrey I love all your postings, but this one is a philosophical lesson, great!
Beautifully designed and reminds me of my late mother... she could be a dragon at times too... my sons & daughter say that I have inherited the family trait but no way could I be as beautiful as this! It’s stunning work and I am envious of your talents too!
haha! I think maybe we all can be at times... Thank you so much!
I always love your work, Rod. And I strongly agree with the other commenters about your wonderful, calm voice.
Thank you don, I appreciate that!
Wow,just wow!you're a proven turner,and now a talented carver,very inspirational....
Thank you very much!😊
as you have accustomed us to magnificent creations added to the previous ones. magnificent.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
I was waiting for you to admit being an alcoholic at the start of the episode's story. Love your videos and love your voice, they are really calming, it really brightens my day seeing one of your videos in my feed.
I can see how that might seem the direction I was heading...but thankfully no. Thank you very much! 😊
Tear out's at times are my major pain at times. You must have infinite patience. I never learnt to carve but the dragon bowl is a lovely job well done Rob.
Thanks very much! 😊
First time ever saw how dragon scales where made in wood. Very cool. Love the whole piece. Great work.
Thank you very much!
A labour of love indeed and also a love of labour in your art. You have every right to be proud of such a strong looking piece.
Thanks very much! 😊
Love the bowl. Your art is an inspiration. While the detail work can be arduous, the result justifies the effort. Thanks much for your work on this channel.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
Awesome job your craftsmanship and knowledge is absolutely amazing it turned out just amazing, take care my friend god bless from the 🇺🇸🇺🇸🐊🐊Cajun 🐊🐊🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you Cajun, Semper Fi brother
Your narrative is always so great. You really put a lot of work into this bowl and it shows. Great work!
Thanks very much, Robert! I received your sticker! I'll show it in a video soon. You have the same headed your way!
R Humphrey Thanks! I’m excited for it! Hopefully if I get motivated to edit, I’ll have a bowl video out sometime within the next week or so.
Love when you share others work,,,I have to pause and take closer looks at their awesome work and ideas
Thank you Gordon, I'm glad you take the time to look at them, there's an incredible amount of talent in this audience!! 😊
You must have the patience of Job to carve those scales on the side of the bowl. It turned out a beautiful bowl, as they all do Rod. Keep the videos coming. Cheers, Huw
Thank you very much, Huw! I'll be honest....about a quarter of the way into the carving I was asking myself....why....why must I do these things.....lol
I have to say that your voice is comforting, and you don't drivel on about nonsense! That's one of the reasons I've gotten hooked on your channel, besides the excellent craftsmanship. By the way, have you ever considered doing lessons? A lot of these tools aren't something that some people (like myself) could ever buy in the near future, but being able to show people a new craft and have them take home artwork that they made would be pretty sweet!
Thank you Alaina! I've considered it in the past, perhaps I'll give the idea of teaching more thought...
You are easy to listen to. A mellow fellow. As for your name, or mine - as long as I am not called late for super I don’t care what I am called. Love watching your videos.
hahaha, I agree completely! Thanks very much!
Rod, I think this may be one of your most beautiful pieces of art yet. You always do such good work, and you let the wood be what it wants to be. Keep up the great work. JT
Thanks very much, JT!
Yet again Rod I am completely blown away with this that bowl is so beautiful your fantastic and it's an absolute pleasure to watch your work thanks for taking the time and effort to do it. 👍👍👍
Thank you, I sure appreciate that!
Sometimes we are all a little rough around the edges like your bowl. I agree with Jonathan I also find your voice calming and relaxing. I haven't said it yet but the bowl turned out fine. Semper Fi brother.
I couldn't agree more! Thank you. and Semper Fi!
Wow. This is really beautiful. I can't even imagine how many hours you put into this bowl. I love it. The scales were a really great addition.
Thanks very much! this one did take a lot of time, days, but I'm glad I did it! Thanks again!
Magnificent result. Thanks!
Thank you!
It's like an antique bowl until you get up and see the gem of a dragon inside. It's a master piece no doubt.
Thank you very much!
I sure enjoy your wonderful teaching and creations of the pieces of wood!
I love watching how u make things especially when u show your passion threw your work.... 💪💪💪
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Love this - fantastic!
Your voice reminds me of Franklin MacCormick on late-night Chicago radio of the 1960's..."Come, sit with me by the fire....".
The bowl is quite special...
Wow, a very high compliment, thank you so much!
Nice work. Great patience to work with the wood. Enjoy watching and listening.
Thanks Jon
Thank you very much!
Loved the intro,,,,almost as much as the work!
Thank you!😁
I roared with laughter when you mentioned "Dragnet" we are old enough to have watched the TV show and listened to the radio show. Then when I saw the design for the bowl, well more giggles, there is a radio comedy special based on Dragnet that occasionally plays on late night old time radio shows, it is called "Dragonet". If you have a chance to listen to it, do so, it has it's moments. However this does take away from the artistry of the lovely bowl you worked on, you are a real artist. With a feeling for wood, design and poetry.
haha, it was fun, I'm glad you enjoyed it...not much of an actor here... Thanks very much!
Wow. That's bloody awesome mate..
Thank you very much!
That was awesome.
This is a wonderful work of a real master !!!
Thanks very much! 😊
STUNNING MASTERPIECE, thank you very much.
You're welcome, and thank you very much!
Absolutely amazing work!
Thank you very much!
Outstanding!!! Thanks for sharing. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you!
Amazing Dragon bowl!
I love it. Such craftsmanship .
Thank you very much!
Awesome !!
Great Dragnet intro. The bowl's character matches its name.
Thanks very much! 😊
That’s a wicked bowl rod. You must have the patience of a saint to sit and do all those scales. As always rod stunning work.
Thank you very much, Steve!
❤️🐉 I always enjoy your videos! I love how you showcase other turners. And you have a soothing voice.
Thanks very much! 😊
Dear Ron, a very nice bowl and awesome design. I love the Dragon-theme. I like your explanations about what you are doing and i agree you have a warm clear and friendly voice and speech, that coud be well understood . Thanks for your very entertaining clips. Greetings from Germany.
Thank you very much, you're very kind! Greetings back from Indiana!
Another stunner. :D All that hand-carving made my hands ache just watching. Lovely result. Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you, hard on the hands for sure, but worth the effort I hope!
Fantastic project. Really loving the resin carvings. I really need to add that to my to-do-list. tear outs are the woods way of telling the artist which way to go, for the creation. In the end, the wood will share it's grace, as you say "rough and refined, rugged and full of character"... Keep things rolling. Out of all the woodworking youtube channels, yours is the most enjoyable.
Very kind of you to say Bob, much appreciated!
Beautiful. Much talent. Thank you for your service. 🇺🇸
Thank you, I appreciate that!
I'm new in this hobby I learn a lot with you thanks for this class.
Awesome. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanx
Thank you!
WOWZER! Great work totally awesome!
Thank you very much!
As always, a beautiful finished article, an excellent video with an informative commentary. Thanks for sharing this (and all the other videos) with us. Truly inspiring. Can't wait for the next one.
Thank you very much!
Rod, you have an interesting way about you. Love the voice, the humor, the obvious talent and love for wood turning. Had quite a few uncooperative pieces of wood myself that required hours of sanding but well worth the time and effort. Now want to tackle a similar bowl after i finish a few other projects. So many ideas, so little time.
Thank you very much, A R! All that effort sure pays off in the end, doesn't it!
Amazing bowl. Rod you astound me with your ideas and your talent for working wood. Thanks for the video.
Thank you, I appreciate that very much!
Absolutely beautiful. You nailed it!
Thank you!
Rod, the patience you must have! But then you ARE marine. Beautiful turn, SAFE TURNING, JOHN
Thank you very much! Semper Fi!
Im pretty excited you uploaded again! You're videos inspire me and i need that inspiration! Thank you Mr. Humphrey! Keep em coming!
I'm both happy and humbled to have inspired, misfitramone! Thanks for telling me 😊
@@RHumphrey I'm very appreciative of you getting back to as many of your fans/audience as you do. You're always responding within a short period and i respect that you take the time to do that. Loved the intro. Great thinking on the character of the bowl. Turned out beautiful.
Thank you very much!

Absolutely beautiful carving

Just loved that intro👍And your shows in general, thank you.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
And as always, beautiful work. I enjoyed the carving.
Thanks again, Derek!
This is so rustic, it almost looks like you found it like this. Like some type of buried artifact. The spalted wood was the perfect choice.
Much appreciated!
Another great video, love the dragon bowl. It shows you have amazing talent. Thanks again for sharing, and God Bless
Thank you, I appreciate that!
