    It was great to see the whole family out enjoying the day with you on the water. Hopefully in the future the little ones will take their kids out to show them how their grandpa taught them to net salmon. The fillets sure looked good. I'll be heading to Alaska soon and am looking forward to eating some good fresh caught wild salmon! You sure whet my appetite!

    Was a pleasure really, was alot harder years ago when we were at this commerically & had alot more nets out. Yes actually had a few rock cods & some scolpins the gopro wasn't tipped down enough to see. Fishery officers take any extra & they are taged & given to older & sick people. Sure was, you pick the big out & let the rest dry up & shake it out. Thanks, appreciate it ..!!

    Any extra caught are taken & taged by the Nunatukavut organization & given to elders & so on, its well managed. The commerical fishery was closed years ago so the stocks are very strong. Never trolled for salmon but works very well for artic char, will give it a try for salmon.

    Those rock cod are pretty good eating....I got one of those nets but it is illegal to set them here...I still do though from time to time....I believe a man should be able to feed his family any way he can.

    I no it's all work but it looks like fun work...Something I would like to try someday...Do you ever catch any other fish when you set the nets for salmon? And what happens when you get more than your 6? Like backyard said...Its got to be a pain in the ass getting all the weeds out of the net...Great video William....

    • @Biglandtrapper
      @Biglandtrapper  8 лет назад

      Winters here are harsh we don't have any fish farms here in Labrador, there are a few further South around Newfoundland island. Our salmon food fishery opens in a couple weeks, looking forward to filling the tags, were only allowed 6 hopefully get a few large ones out of it.....

    • @ChileExpatFamily
      @ChileExpatFamily 8 лет назад

      +William Larkham Jr (Bigland Trapper) no tags here. We fish year round. There are 20 salmon farms with in 1 hour of us. We fish year round. We have mild winters with little to no snow.
      I smoked 2 salmon yesterday. Jim

      We have one quota of crab landed waiting for the ice to clear to get into another zone. Our season usually starts late May early June depending on amount of ice that made during the winter.....So looking forward to getting a salmon in the smoker, enjoy, its one of my favorite things to eat......

    try putting a hook at the end of your net so when the fish are swimming along the net they get trapped in the hook

    • @Biglandtrapper
      @Biglandtrapper  7 лет назад

      Were not allowed to do that now but we use to do it years ago when there was a commercial salmon fishery...

  • @StanTheMan709

    I love all your videos! but people need to learn that Netting fish is not a sustainable solution to catching fish, would of been better to get those tags by trolling a spinner or spoon, cus what happens if you catch more than 6 in a net?
    sorry to sound like winer... lol Have you every tried Trolling for salmon? with abig red devil or rapala? work great! giver a shot sometime =)

      They sure are, most of the 10 - 12 pounders are already passed through before the season opens. They are a great eating fish, looking forward to filling the tags again the summer. All salt water, this is in William's Harbour, open to the North Atlantic ...!!

    • @Biglandtrapper
      @Biglandtrapper  7 лет назад

      I have tied flies before but I don't get to fly fish very often, I spend quiet a bit of time out to sea during the summer months.. I fish traditionally, with rods, with pots, cast net, otter trawl & so on, I do it all.....

    • @petrhaisman8645
      @petrhaisman8645 7 лет назад

      OK, I see, you´re an all round fisherman. I am a fly fisher and fly tier. So that is what I call sport fishing. That´s why I do not like fishing with nets... It is commercial and grabby and not enjoyable in my eyes...
