It depends how you look at it , the hot hatch term used to mean the cooking model with a bigger engine and sharper suspension.. Nowadays people try to assign 0-60 times to the words hot hatch , i guess nowadays warm hatch would be a better saying for it , especially in a world of bmw m140i and audi rs4's , none the less we can all agree it is a fun car.
It's been demonstrated that the i3 (and any battery powered motor) has significantly more power/torque with a full battery rather than the almost empty battery used in the track time here. Of course the tires, etc still limit the speed capability for the corners so a full battery might not have improved the lap time too much.
Please please try that with the BEV. The REx is a second slower and a lot heavier, so while 0-40 is irrelevant on a flying lap, and 100+ on the straight is out of reach, the pickup from 40-70 feels very nippy to me. Would be really interested to know if there's a difference on the track.
Well Suzuki have been making engines for over 70 years, mainly motorcycles and there are thousands of motorcycles on the road that they have made, one is the Suzuki Cavalcade 1360cc, V4, 112bph, made from 1985 to 1991, that have the original engine have done over 250000 miles with no work being done on the engine except oil chnagers, and they still do 45 mpg average.
Half the price and tens times the fun, the SS is so much better. The so called green i3 has *more* impact on the environment than the Swift when everything is taken into account including manufacturing and disposal. If it were not for the all the tax breaks these electric cars would never be considered.
Bullshit, the i3 is made in a factory using 95 % sustainable energy and is made up of largely recycled ( not recyclable but already recycled) plastics. Same goes for the battery and I am sure CFRP by the time it gets to the end of its life.
Ilian Ibrishimov It is not just about CO2 (or claimed manufacturers figures which we all know are way out, they can't even give us true mpg or emission figures for the real world). The i3 costs more than twice as much as the Suzuki, despite being electric it will NEVER pay for itself in the long run over the Suzuki with running cost savings. The BMW is also slow and unengaging. Why would anyone buy the i3? The only people that might buy it are the same crowd who rush to buy the latest Apple product the day it comes out, regardless of how useless it is and regardless of cost. The BMW is basically a solution desperately looking for a problem. Expensive, slow and zero fun. Yet despite these findings the review still says the i3 is "a drivers car" really? A drivers car for a zombie maybe.
Almost everything you wrote proves your stupidity and ignorance. You don't have any knowledge about this car, or engineering behind it, or an IQ that enables you to understand why it's more expensive than a Swift (hint: there are things other than lap times that make a good car). Same goes for the Apple comment. Typical imbecile hater with zero knowledge or experience, and an intellect too limited to use the potential of devices and judge them by their actual performance, qualities and experience they give you, and not by the specifications on paper, which mean close to nothing in the real world. The sad part is, despite being incredibly stupid, people like you consider themselves superior, because hating a product you have no knowledge about and no experience with, and therefore no right to talk about, is what obviously makes you very intelligent, right? Try to disprove me, as a medical student (and someone with a 5 year university mechanical engineering degree) I meet and work with a lot of people like you, who "know" everything about everything, and give their uneducated opinions as often as possible. You've never even seen the i3 in person, let alone driven it, and you know it's an unengaging car and it's zero fun. On the other hand, people who've driven more cars than you will sit in during your entire life call it a fun and a great car...strange.
I have a Nissan LEAF, which is even slower and less engaging than the i3. But I would rather be driving an EV like the LEAF every day than pretty much any gas hot hatch on the market comparable to the Swift. Until you've driven an electric car, you really don't know how archaic gas cars are. I challenge you to test drive one.
togethia the i3 on the track looks very similar to my old renault R4, it can be funny for a pair of laps. but if you have a bmw badge on the bonnet and 487476762 price tag you can call it a driver's car
Jeff Kubel I have driven a Renault Zoe and although it's fine for some people I'm a big fan of the way the swift is an honest little rev happy cheap hot hatch. Just so people know and you can look these figures up for urself in Australia ( act) over 90000km the i3 will cost just $430 in electricity if you use solar then less. And that's if ur only getting 120km to a charge usually people are getting approx 140km. And service cost on average $240 a year. So to the people out there that comment on this car who ACTUALLY know very little sitting behind there PC do some research
That really makes me have doubts about this video. In Europe, the i3 REx can hold its range. They could've thrashed it with a 75 miles left in the charge, but 6?! That's careless at the least!
toyotaprius79 It's because it would be a bit embarrassing if the'r darling petrol got beat or run close by an electric. They're not exactly known for being the least biased journo's anyway.
Interesting compare. Although this was not the natural environment of the I3, which is the city (just look to those tires...). So, next time, they should do some light starts and tight corners.
What a piece of ugly shit that BMW is. Slow, ugly and expensive. What a perfect combo. I'd take the Suzuki anytime. Also, fuck this green car shit. The pollution emitted by the cars in the western world (which abide to high emission standards) are responsible for less than 3-4% of all greenhouse emissions, so you can sell 10 million of i3's and it will still make no substantial difference.
***** Looking good? I wonder how a Seat MPV with the face combination of a bull and a toilet seat looks good to anyone. And yes, the acceleration might be good, but the electric engine won't provide much of either top speed or range. If i´m not totally mistaken I´d say It was colorgraded that way. (Else it could simply be a Cam Filter). But usually this kind of grading approach would be taken if you have shifting light settings, -like suddenly the sky is clouded and gray and then a little later the sun beams trough creating strong contrasts and saturated colors. If so then you need to pull those two different light moods towards each other - Meaning making the sunny content look a lot more faded and less contrasty while trying to beef up the faded footage.
It makes since for BMW (who usually allow you to defeat traction control) to make the systems permanent on the i3. I mean who would buy one and ever want the back to step out? People who buy these don't want RWD thrills..
Ddyracer D Well I'm no BMW chief engineer but they have always built RWD cars, it's what they know how to do best. Even the Xi models are RWD biased AWD.. Maybe it had to do with packaging? Perhaps it didn't fit the architecture of the design to have the drive train be focused on the front wheels (weight balance wise ect..). Whatever the reason it doesn't matter. It doesn't kick the tail out ever because people that are expected to buy and use these cars would have a panic attack if they got oversteer (if they even knew what was happening). Point is that for driving noobs (the average road user) a car has to be safe and severely understeer biased if anything (like audis lol).
Ddyracer D Because it's the most space effective place to put the engine. Same reason a smart was rr. In an electric where battery size is a big issue that makes a large difference.
The Intel Core i3 is slower, cost twice as much, no sound, no fun factor, heavier n goes slower around corner. And somehow, at the end of this processor review, the i3 is the better driver car? Lols... i dread for the future we're forced to drive sterile shit like this as a daily driver... might as well take electric train for commuting purposes.
+Seramics Backward thinking is really what I dread about the future. Look a little more into this. The BMW is slower - round a track, where it was never really designed to be. Off the line it's way faster and for instant punch in normal driving it's in a different league. Unless you're driving everywhere in the swift at 5500rpm+ you've got nowhere near the performance under foot. It costs a lot more - yes. It will also get a lot more back when it comes to selling it and in the mean time it's costing very little to fuel (under 20% of the swift presuming you drive the swift like a vicar), doesn't need oil, filter, etc at service time, is far kinder to it's brakes thanks to regen, wil never need a clutch, gearbox or catalyst. Ownership costs wise over 3 years the i3 is way less expensive than a swift diesel never mind a sport. Even an aixam 500diesel will cost more to own. I'm sure they're a hoot if you're into that kind of thing. No sound - it's not loud like an ice car but there is sound. Like a quiet jet kind of sound as it winds up. Maybe you should try one before making silly comments? No fun factor - well he seemed to like it and again it's not what it's meant for. Drive one on normal journeys and it's a brilliant experience. It's heavier - so what? Almost everything is. It's a similar weight to a Mini which have a pretty good reputation for fun. Goes slower round a corner - that would be because, again, it's not meant as a track car. See the bicycle size tyres? It's designed to save energy. Again I'll remind you that to own something as cheaply as this you would have to be in a very crap car indeed. Basically you've obviously never even been near one, much less driven one so please keep the silly clarksonesque posturing where it belongs.
hung huge so u have driven both? then why u comment so long clarksonesque yourself then? backward thinking lol... people like you doesnt know how to appreciate real substance and only care about the latest tech..... why do you think people still prefer drive stick nowadays? arent CVT, dual cluth has been around for a long time? ohh, in many cases, dual cluth breaks time all the time too, newer is better right? i have owned hybrid before and its pure shit, carrying aroudn a heavy batt which needs expensive replacement latter.... and Swift Sports is a petrol car, not diesel, if it is, then ur talking about the wrong Swift... what about u do ur homework before coming up with a counter argument? why do many people still like cars like Evo, RX7? these are so old car.... you have no idea what im talking about do u? bloody noob... go ahead with ur shit pretentious lady electric car lol.... what a jokester dont come crying to me if you drive like a lady and doesnt know how to shift a gear manually ok?
hung huge you're a complete noob if you tell me owning a BMW with advanced technology over the long term is gonna be cheaper than a simple Suzuki Swift Sport which is build mostly mechanically. have you owned a BMW before? just entering the service centre gonna cost a lot more due to higher qualifications of mechanic required to service your car........you sound like a bloody 3 and a half year old kid playing mechanical vs electrical toy car
electric motors have torque through all the powerband, while a regular engine starts with less torque and will gain it as time goes on. that is why it is faster in terms of acceleration,
Astreim erm.... Gearbox in an electric motor would be useless , They have the same BHP and Torque regardless of speed because electric motors can spin at 50,000 rpm and have one moving part.
At 2:25 with 4 miles battery range, you can see that it's in limp mode - the right hand of the ePOWER display shows limited power. Did Autoexpress really think nbody was notice? Video sposored by OPEC? Why would you test a car with a flat battery?
They have used the only electric i3, not the one with the range extender (heavier, higher center of gravity). Specially when doing the timed lap using the range extender...
I3 one of the most desirable cars! Like most motoring journalists they all believe anything Germany produces is quality and beyond fault. Wonder who pays for their little jollies to nice countries for car reviews?
This comparison was very biased towards the Suzuki Swift. The i3 would have been more comparable if it has been the lighter non REx model, also the battery should have been fully charged, at low charge levels when driven flat out the BMS reduces the available power output at higher speeds. The final thing which would I believe have got the times much closer would have been to do the laps from a standing start rather than flying laps. If what I suggest was done the results could have been very different even with the limited maximum speed of the i3 at 93mph. I have to state I've nothing against Suzuki, I had 5 in previous years starting with the tiny Alto, 2 1litre and 1 1.3litre Swifts and then finally a Mk2 1.3 16v GTi which was a blast. I now own an i3 😊
Battery drained after just 2 laps on the track? Reminds me of playing games on my iPhone. I'd take the Suzuki Swift any day for instant gratification without the annoyance.
I hated the look of the i3 when they were first launched but its definately grown on me, Altough I wouldnt want one myself. Its the sort of car Id buy for my Mum if I could afford it. The swift sport is a lovely looking car and I almost bought one about 5 years ago but went for an Ibiza FR instead. For me the swift is abit too narrow and tall looking, If Suzuki designed them a little wider and the roof was abit lower I think it would be damn near perfect in terms of looks.
By being light with a well balanced chassis , its got a cult following amongst its owners because of the handling. Theres a reason if you go to nurbergring that this car is the most popular rental car by a country mile.
i3 may be slower, but I believe it gives the driver at least the same driving pleasure with SS. Since no one will use i3 on a race track to win a trophy, the pleasure it gives is far more important than the speed it has.
No it gives the driver a more comfortable luxurious ride from point A to point B. If that is what pleases you then it gives more pleasure. But if tasting some driving fun is what put's a smile on your face after arriving to your destination then the Swift Sport is what gives more pleasure.
That Suzuki thing... 1.6 litre, a little over 130hp and does 0-60mph in under nine seconds. I wonder why 130hp here in Brazil will hardly hit 60mph in under eleven seconds and never under ten. Lame.
Years ago the first 'mobile' phones were the size of a suitcase. We all laugh when we see photos of them now, but without them we would have never got to the mobiles we love now. This is only the first gen of electric cars, just like mobile phones the advances will be massive compared to traditional combustion engined cars. But that will only happen as long as early adopters spend their cash on cars like this. We are also on the verge of a massive breakthrough in battery and charging technology (remember the Tesla has to make do with laptop cells). The future of electric cars will be mind blowing as the sheer torque from electric motors is beyond what a traditional engine can deliver. I guarantee you one day you all will be talking about cars in your day to your grand children, and they will be rolling around on the floor laughing and saying 'no way, you really used drive around in cars filled with highly flammable liquid with smoke coming out of little pipes at the back!' :)
What does Audi have to do here? Btw Audi costs as much as a Bmw, it's heavy just as a Bmw, it's faster than a Bmw in a straight line, it's better built with a greater racing history. Most Audis are even faster around the track than the Bmws (RS5 vs m3, etc..) The one and only thing the bmw has is the RWD, but if i want RWD car i would buy a Merc. Go home fanboy
I like the i3, but the last coupe concept they made of it just before they changed it to four door was looking quite a lot better. A such the Swift might be slightly dated now, but when it first arrived to market it was certainly not criticized for it looks, because at that time it had more personality than nearly anything else in that segment, thus it was well driving and it sold a lot. Actually both these cars deserves some respect; The i3 for being a completely different approach taken by BMW with a strong fan base of driver enthusiasts, yet BMW did it anyway, that is courageous. The interior if the i3 is a automotive chapter by it´s own means - No other modern car has only B surfaces and the use of sustainable materials and the development of production methods and research to get that to work is more than extensive. The Swift deserves respect because, as already mentioned it was a cheap, broad segment car, yet with quite good production quality, well driving and exterior design that was very well received and stood out from the crowd.
By the last coupe concept they made, do you mean the i8? You may believe the i8 became the i3, but they both exist. The i8 is a coupe and the i3 is the hatchback.
Alex Mason No I do not mean the i8, Just Google (images): "bmw i3 concept coupe" and you will see the concept that was the last public concepts car before the i3 hit market.
Suzuki owns the record for Pikes Peak When it was an actual dirt course ! Although stupid Yanks have no clue about good cars and motoring ,attention ...BMW also is over rated.Suzuki is still alive in the USA !
MrIndianRebel it's called WARM HATCH it would not have a chance with real hot hatch like Ford Fiesta ST or Mini Cooper S unfortunately , even Mini Cooper accelerates on 7,9 sec to 62 miles but it's not a hot hatch at all
Irek M Like I said the SSS doesn't have a turbo and costs about half the price of Fiesta St and the Mini Cooper S. Give the SSS a good turbo kit, intakes and FFE and it give the Ford and Mini a run for it's money while still costing at half the price.
MrIndianRebel I do understand your point but only if the car is quicker (to 62 miles) than 7 sec is called Hot Hatch by today standards. We do have new Cooper and Cooper S and I can assure you both Minis will leave this Suzuki in the dust.

@@fcorivers maybe, but it would have been fun to see it move around more, power sliding etc
Basically you've obviously never even been near one, much less driven one so please keep the silly clarksonesque posturing where it belongs.
hung huge so u have driven both? then why u comment so long clarksonesque yourself then? backward thinking lol... people like you doesnt know how to appreciate real substance and only care about the latest tech..... why do you think people still prefer drive stick nowadays? arent CVT, dual cluth has been around for a long time? ohh, in many cases, dual cluth breaks time all the time too, newer is better right?
i have owned hybrid before and its pure shit, carrying aroudn a heavy batt which needs expensive replacement latter....
and Swift Sports is a petrol car, not diesel, if it is, then ur talking about the wrong Swift... what about u do ur homework before coming up with a counter argument?
why do many people still like cars like Evo, RX7? these are so old car.... you have no idea what im talking about do u? bloody noob... go ahead with ur shit pretentious lady electric car lol.... what a jokester
dont come crying to me if you drive like a lady and doesnt know how to shift a gear manually ok?
hung huge you're a complete noob if you tell me owning a BMW with advanced technology over the long term is gonna be cheaper than a simple Suzuki Swift Sport which is build mostly mechanically. have you owned a BMW before? just entering the service centre gonna cost a lot more due to higher qualifications of mechanic required to service your car........you sound like a bloody 3 and a half year old kid playing mechanical vs electrical toy car
Got a lot of hot air coming out with nothing to say, haven't you?
hung huge or did you switch to taking trains already? well done.
Apparently, the i3 accelerates from 0-30 faster than an E92 M3.
electric motors have torque through all the powerband, while a regular engine starts with less torque and will gain it as time goes on. that is why it is faster in terms of acceleration,
Astreim erm.... Gearbox in an electric motor would be useless , They have the same BHP and Torque regardless of speed because electric motors can spin at 50,000 rpm and have one moving part.
Jason Muir no it won't be useless, but it adds weight and complexity. Halving the gear ratio and you instantly double the torque at the wheels.
I wonder if a non-REx version would do better... after all, it's almost a second faster to 60 mph and it weighs ~300 lb less
At 2:25 with 4 miles battery range, you can see that it's in limp mode - the right hand of the ePOWER display shows limited power. Did Autoexpress really think nbody was notice? Video sposored by OPEC? Why would you test a car with a flat battery?
Nice tripod at 6:53
They have used the only electric i3, not the one with the range extender (heavier, higher center of gravity). Specially when doing the timed lap using the range extender...
I prefer Suzuki swift.
i own a 2014 suzuki swift 1.2 vvt inline4 zxi
daily driving since 6 yrs 101000+kms still has the thrill it came with on day 1
I3 one of the most desirable cars! Like most motoring journalists they all believe anything Germany produces is quality and beyond fault. Wonder who pays for their little jollies to nice countries for car reviews?
Great to see how fast you can drive with only 155/70R19.
I now own an i3 😊
Swift sport looks like a beast of a car
Battery drained after just 2 laps on the track? Reminds me of playing games on my iPhone. I'd take the Suzuki Swift any day for instant gratification without the annoyance.
Maaan, you can turn the esp off in the i3. Even has a drift mode...
They actually tested the i3...what a near EMPTY battery. Real fair Auto Express...
Those skinny tyres and van like chassis is not gonna do well on a track.
What's next? Renault Scenic vs. Citroen C4 Picasso on the Nurburgring nordschleife?
Suzuki Swift it's better 👍💕
Test with 10% battery? power go down, and the weight of REX version dont help.
if you are paying £30.000 for a vehicle you want it to look like a 30.000 Pounds vehicle there are £6.000 pounds cars which look way better than a i3
The i3's tires looks like it's from a shopping cart
thanks for the vid! might i suggest driving with a pair of sunglasses pls?
I hated the look of the i3 when they were first launched but its definately grown on me, Altough I wouldnt want one myself.
Its the sort of car Id buy for my Mum if I could afford it.
The swift sport is a lovely looking car and I almost bought one about 5 years ago but went for an Ibiza FR instead.
For me the swift is abit too narrow and tall looking, If Suzuki designed them a little wider and the roof was abit lower I think it would be damn near perfect in terms of looks.
I have a z4 3.0si and the i3 feels faster up to 80kph. I wonder how does the SS do it better.
By being light with a well balanced chassis , its got a cult following amongst its owners because of the handling.
Theres a reason if you go to nurbergring that this car is the most popular rental car by a country mile.
Bende tam ne zaman suyu çıkar diye merak ediyodum...
Never realized how hideous the i3 is until I saw this video.
The i3 is a lot of money thrown into a pit. The Suzuki Swift Sport is the best value for money in the car world.
both are nice cars
They're driving with the WRONG wheels. The 19" wheels are quite a bit better. The 20"s are more for looks... (which I don't like either!)
Swift anyday
i3 may be slower, but I believe it gives the driver at least the same driving pleasure with SS.
As an i3 owner & everyday 90km+ driver, I don't agree. I have to drive also SS to be sure though.
m6rk Well maybe but if you are looking for luxurious driving you could get a 3l v6 jaguar xfr for the same price that would be much more luxurious.
Wish I could have both!
Nice review.
People seem to forget how much pollution is made when the batteries for EVs are produced and how much of a bitch they are to recycle.
i3's are now under $15k USD, that's some intense depreciation
swift is awesome
why on earth would you compare these two cars
That Suzuki thing... 1.6 litre, a little over 130hp and does 0-60mph in under nine seconds. I wonder why 130hp here in Brazil will hardly hit 60mph in under eleven seconds and never under ten. Lame.
Sub 1000kg weight helps.... even a fiesta is 1250kg...
Its the most stupid comparison i have ever seen! How about testing the two during a turn turtle or body roll..lets see who will survive!
i3's traction control seems way too intrusive.
The biggest problem with this car is its price. It is comically expensive.
bmw`s tires suck on track, this battle was lost for the i3 since the begining
B to the M to the W...
i love you swift
If a Suzuki Swift is being compared to a BMW then bimmer already lost!
It makes no sence to compare these 2 cars.
good shots
Wouldn't be suprised if it was all in the tire width
S Miller oh please the i3 has no pull after 60 and it's a top heavy box on wheels.
8-10 mpg on the suzuki...almost supercar like consumption
Except when you realize that doing the same thing in a supercar gives you 2 mpg.
Suzuki swift sport really fun to drive
Lol 9seconds faster around a 1minute track. Bmw sucks..
Latvietis96 Yeah in ugliest car ever contest
Latvietis96 so you like washing machines, not cars
of course olways bmw is the best
Swift reply was bes
are those space saver wheels on BMW?
BMW = Very expensive, very heavy, slow, very ugly! what were they thinking?
+Oscar Radikoro AUDI = Very expensive, very heavy, slow, very GOODCAR what were they thinking buying bmw lol
Go home fanboy
i have a swift.... nd... now i proud my car... bmw... suck... 👺👺
sorry i was wrong
In india swifts power is poor and bad building quality... 1.2 engine
Loooooooool, BMW vs Suzuki XD
BMW i3 looks sick!!!!
swift ftw
Dudes, the i3 is actually a pretty cool-looking car... It looks futuristic... The suzuki on the other hand, just looks cheap...
It is cheap.
I think you're confusing the words futuristic and ugly. The i8 looks futuristic, the i3 looks ugly.
Alex Mason No I do not mean the i8, Just Google (images): "bmw i3 concept coupe" and you will see the concept that was the last public concepts car before the i3 hit market.
Suzuki owns the record for Pikes Peak When it was an actual dirt course ! Although stupid Yanks have no clue about good cars and motoring ,attention ...BMW also is over rated.Suzuki is still alive in the USA !
owen jaja all your sensors are connected to your mouth jaja! i dont say it in a bad way btw its cool u do that!
we all already know the bmw i3 is pointless garbage. no need to consider producing another i3 video. thanks.
The i3 looks horrible and is very ugly. How would anyone want to buy this?
The i3 looks so horrible !
Suzuki is not a hot hatch it's to slow ,hot hatch acceleration is less than 7 sec
Irek M It doesnt have a turbo and still manages a solid 8.6s I would call it a hot hatch.
Irek M Yes I would agree on that.
The BMW is fugly!
bmw uins
