Interesting subject, well covered and with lots of worthwhile viewer comments below as well. Many of us RV'ers know very little about very significant safety-related subjects (like tire maintenance and weight management). So this kind of video serves a genuine public service. I respect the diligence and thoroughness you give the management of your camper and its systems, and this helps make your videos very worthwhile as well. Thanks to both of you.
Thanks for watching and for leaving a great comment! These topics aren't always the most exciting, however, they are really important. My goal is to share experiences and the little tidbits that we learn along the way. RUclips is a vast wealth of knowledge that I use daily, and it feels good to contribute my 2 cents.
This video is probably one the best if not the best I have seen on a tire review and I could hear you well. You did the review on a well worn set of tires and showed each tire where as other videos they talk about how good looking the tire is and how it fits their truck, and how good their truck looks, and other stuff that does not really elucidate long term performance and wear. They do not wear the tires before doing a "re"-view. They do their review on new tires; how is that a review without actually running them?? Review means you are taking another look and comparing your new notes with the old notes. I just purchased a set of LT285/75R16 NEXAN Roadian ATX based my personal inspection of the tire, the price as I am short on cash, the expected milage, the road hazrad warranty, and the overall warranty of the tire. Plus, if I do experience a problem with a tire there are shops in the areas where I travel and wheel. I would like a bit more agressive tire, but I am short on cash and these tires are supposed to do well in snow as it does snow in these mountains. We just got a sprinkling of snow yeaterday. Thank you for a well put together informative video. Be safe...
I agree completly! I do like the Coopers better so far, much smoother and quieter (even when the Nexens were new), but time will tell how they last. Reviews are good, so I have high hopes!
Try Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus with a soft bristle brush to remove that brake dust. I had a brake pad go bad and showered my rim with particles on a road trip. I tried lots of products and this is the only thing that worked. It ate up the metal from the brake pad, but didn't harm the rim.
I use cooper with a 2500 ram . Truck is only used to work. I have truck camper and a travel trailer. Coopers are doing great so far very happy at this point.
Very helpful video. I just ordered crossfire system for my rear tires, something you may consider for many reasons. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thanks! I have looked at them but have some questions and concerns before I go that route. Since our tire pressure has been so consistent, there hasn’t been much to think about. I’d like to know what you think about them once you get a chance to get some miles in
I’ve had these tires on my last three trucks. They were great! I do a lot of hunting in the fall and I’m always off-road and a lot of mud. They also do great in the snow. Only downfall is the rain starts after about 25,000 miles. But that’s usually just a takeoff. My back wheels will slide a little bit.other than that, great tire for the price!
42k with your driving conditions and weight-you did well. Coopers is what I run on my 1/2 ton 4x4 as a daily driver. They don’t get near the abuse your rig does but I’m happy with the performance after 20k. I’ll be interested to see how yours hold up.
I’m impressed with the tires, especially given the terrible reviews they have. They were flawless for us. I’m excited to have the new tires, they are so quiet and smooth. I hope to have the same good luck that I’ve had with the Nexen tires. Do you have Discoverers?
I've run Cooper AT3 10 ply for close to 200 thousand miles. I've had great service from them. If I ever decide to switch, it would probably be to Goodrich's K2O....
I'm happy to hear that you like them! I looked at the BFG K02s, but the tread life and noise were what stopped me. I have always been a fan of BFG tires, but our current life style requires a different approach. I'm really hoping the AT3s serve us well!
@@Stonybootas someone who pretty much was raised with BFG’s the KO2s in my experience actually are less noisy than the cooper AT3 we bought a brand new (to us had 5k miles on it at 3 years old) F250 and had them till when changed the rims and tires and got BFG’s they were surprisingly less noisy than the coopers both are great but we had our tires re-balanced and rotated them and did everything we could to fix it and the KO2s were so much quieter. Although the KO2s pick up rocks like a mf that’s what makes them noisy but traction wise they are better IMO to the coopers. The KM3s are so noisy it’s insane on the road though but those are mud terrains. Btw great vid I gotta get some tires on my 72 f250 and I don’t have the money or the want for BFG’s at the moment plus it’s a project that mainly sits so def not getting BFG’s yet because I don’t want flats spots lol.
If you have heard of Runaway Roses… they bought a brand new Ram and had Nexan on their Ram and had a “Bubble” Tires like anything else are a role of the dice… but they’re the only thing between you and the road…I Love my Faulken AT3’s
I've has 3 bubbles on my Toyos in the last year. And I've not exceeded the weight limit on these E rated tires. It's frustrating because they're not cheap.
I have read about so many problems with the Nexen tires, I was always looking for the start of an issue, I just got lucky. And, I agree, with any product there are risks, I just had a good run with them! I have some miles on my Discoverer AT3s and love them so far. I'll review them in the not too distant future.
I had some Nexen Rodian AT tires on a Ram 1500 and they rode real nice. Traded the truck 6k miles after so no long term report. Im a little surprised you waited as long as you did for the new tires as those looked a little rough especially for the type of driving you do. Glad your set with the new ones and dont think you can go wrong with Discover AT 3. Lots of guys on the Ram Forum have them and have nothing but good things to say.
Yes, we will have another video about the new tires. There’s a story about it and I needed a whole video to tell it. Plus, we wanted to get a few miles on them so we had some thoughts to share. Coming soon!
I have a friend who's a lifelong mechanic tell me to go with Coopers. After experiencing belt separation issues from the weight with Toyo Open Countries, I wish I'd have listened.
As other commenters have said, it's a roll of the dice. I never expected to have good luck with the Nexen tires. I have high hopes for the new tires, but only time will tell... I'm glad to hear that you mechanic friend likes Coopers.
By the way 42,000 miles is super. I'm leaving Tuesday for Alaska my tires are Michelin and I would say there at least 30,000 they were on the truck when I got it about 3 months ago I've put 8600 on them. I plan on putting new ones on when I get to Seattle.
No no steel wheels you just have to clean them more often. And with the weight that you carry will kinda hide an a unbalanced tire. Balance is must. 30+ years selling tools and equipment experience plus driving my tool trucks for that long and my tool truck tires are over $500 each and I learned a lot about not being balanced.
I’m a balance fanatic! Every time we had the camper off, I’d run the truck up to about 80mph to check the balance. To my surprise, they were always fine. It wasn’t until the last 4-5k miles that I had a little shake while unload. At that point, I didn’t care to spend the money since we were replacing them anyway. They really held up well! As for the steel wheels, my issue isn’t with cleaning. The problem is that I have steel wheels on the inside and aluminum on the outside. This really effects my ability to rotate. I’ll use the “alternative rotation” in the future. I do like the look of the shiny aluminum wheels though.
We bought our RAM used 5 years ago with 52000 miles on the odometer. We are now at 205000. We are on our 4th set of tires: 2 sets of Michelins, 1 Yokohama, and our current Hankook. All have performed well. All were bought from Discount Tire. Up until our most recent rotation they rotated the tires by remounting them in the new positions without changing the wheel locations. We will see what the next rotation brings. On the weight question, Escapees Club offers weighing of each corner so you can be sure none of the tires are overloaded.
Thanks for all the information! I didn’t know that about Escapees! We have been looking at signing up, which will probably happen in the winter. I’d love to have a weight for each corner! Thanks again!
Michelin has an amazing track record. I was on the fence and ended up with the coopers. Those Nexen tires were much better than I expected, but I wouldn't want them again. Not bad for factory installed tires though.
You mentioned weighing side to side. May I suggest the link to Escapee SmartWeigh program www.escapees.com/education/smartweigh/. They have portable scales that weighs each individual tire in the tow vehicle and trailer. Last time I had my new truck and Nash 17K weighed I saw them do a truck camper. They put scales on all six (6) tires. The owner said he learned as much about his inflation for his F 450 as I did weigh my truck and trailer. You don’t have to be an Escapee member to participate and the have three locations.
I have owned 3 Ram DRWs. One of my trucks got ruined by Texas Hail. All had Nexens. Worse tires ever. Had to replace fronts after 18 to 20,000. New ram has 14,500 miles towing heavy Fifthwheel and fronts will need to be changed by 20,000 . I only rotate fronts due to alcoa rims.
Not too bad, I found a range from about $130-300. They were in the middle, but with nothing to make them stand out from the crowd. Our new discoverers are great! Video coming soon.

You certainly can't complain about those tires. You have put them to the ultimate test. Let's hope that your Coopers treat you as well.

It was a calculated wait on the tires. I wanted to get full usage out of them. My last 3000 miles was all highway and no crazy driving.

Coopers are made in USA.
I think you’ll like the Coopers. I’ve run the on a number of SUVs with really good results.

The crown of the road is always going to make right side tires wear more or different. I drove semi for over 40 years had same problem.
It's wild how expensive tires have become...and you have 6 to replace! Yikes!
I’ll share all that in a video soon, total cost installed was about $1520. Not cheap, but it’s just part of the game I guess.

I’m very happy with the tread life, they lasted longer than I expected. Michelin is excellent! I’m sure you will have many happy miles.
Years ago we ordered a new set at Costco online in Anchorage. Left there with new shoes.

Rust on Rims comes from semimetalic brake pads. Not sure if it's worth upgrading to ceramic pads. We did for fronts axles. They last longer.
How was their 2wd snow performance??
It was pretty good. We didn't drive in too much snow, but the couple of times we did they behaved well.
Are you using the LT or P?
They are LT.
You didn't do a new tire review!
I’ll get around to it. They have been holding up well, so not much to report yet. But, I can try to work that in someday soon.
👍👍

Super singles = no traction in mud and snow, ice you might as well park.

I can't believe it I just got off the phone with my tire man and I'm buying the michelin LTX m/s.. So much for me giving advice.
Nexen is like the South Korean Michelin.
We had good luck, but I’m not sure if they would live up to Michelin’s reputation
A quality iron remover will clean those wheels right up, stuff smells like rotten eggs though
I had the at3s on my 16 mega cab 34 thousand miles later wore out never buy them agian
