  • Few programs are as important to the construction industry as training, and no one trains carpenters like the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. For over 100 years, the UBC has developed and improved training programs to develop well-rounded, skilled crafts workers who have built America. The New England Carpenters Union offers a 4-year apprenticeship program created to thoroughly develop the talents and skills of up-and-coming carpenters. The apprenticeship program is a combination of classroom learning and job site employment. Apprentices attend classes for 1 week every 3 months at the New England Carpenters Training Center in Millbury, MA. Apprentices also learn the trade by working under the guidance of skilled workers, called journeymen. By completing the nearly 6,000 hours of work experience required to graduate from the apprentice program and become a journeyman you will become the best, most well trained, well rounded and most desirable candidate available for employment in this industry.

I’m a young guy getting into carpentry for a GC and can tell right off the back that non-unionized trades get taken advantage of by such non-unionized employment. Low pay, poor hazardous working conditions, days without breaks including lunch and etc.. You are also expendable because you can get replaced real fast by one of our friends south of the border that is willing to get payed low wages.

Zach no last name 1 ....I’m currently earning my bachelors degree in Construction Management. After I graduate, I’d like to complete a Union carpenters apprenticeship. I don’t want to be just a paper pusher. Any advice on getting in?

I need to get into this. The first time I fixed a door knob for my mom, I felt like a man. I felt like I could solve a problem for my family. I gotta sign up for this trade.

It sounds like seeing if being a union carpenter is for you! Depending on where you live, you can find a regional UBC council and sign up for the apprenticeship. In New England and New York state, go to NECTF.org for more info!

I am hopefully beginning my journey with my local carpenters union soon. They should be reaching out to me about applying tomorrow I hope. I've been in the gas/oil for a year and it's absolutely miserable.
