- Here is one of our 1905 Mira 18 1/2 inch Concert Grand console music boxes playing an old favorite of mine, "The Merry Widow" waltz or "Die Lustig Wittwe" from Franz Lehar's 1905 operetta of the same name. The operetta is based on a story about the efforts of an ambassador in Paris who tries to keep a rich widow and her fortune in the country by finding an acceptable local suitor for her. Regardless of the story, the song is absolutely lovely and has for many years been a favorite of mine to play on my phonographs and music boxes. I hope you enjoy this selection on our Mira music box here as much as I do and thanks for stopping in for a visit.
Waltzing around the room right now!.........beautiful
What a fabulous sound and a beautiful song :)
@321beethoven Hi Jim, Thanks for your nice comments. Original 18 1/2 inch Mira discs can still be found on occasion but finding them in excellent playing condition can take time. Reproduced Mira 18 1/2 inch discs are readily available but I have never owned or played one. I was very fortunate to have found this Mira as the sound is lovely. We own two of the 18 1/2 Miras and this one has the sweeter sound. Every music box has its own unique sound. Good luck and best wishes, MusicBoxBoy
Wonderful to think that this disk was prepared in the same year as the premiere of the delightful operetta - over a century ago.
Beautiful. Merry widow sounds deeply moving on this machine.
Loving every disc and the music and sound quality is magnificent and there all in mint condition thank you :-)
Beautiful! I have always wanted a nice disc music box. A 15.5" Regina is nice but your Mira is superb!
One of the songs the Titanic’s brilliant band played of the fateful voyage...
Hurrah! What a wonderful melody! How pleasant is the sound of music-box. Some antique mechanical clocks played melodies for each hour on built in music-box or barrel organ just before striking the hours on bell or gong. Some clocks just don't strike the hours but only mark the hours by melodies. Music-box helps us to listen and learn to play music on vibraphone, xylophone, marimba, celesta and glockenspiel. Even barrel organ and player piano helps us to listen and learn to play music on organ and piano respectively. Nowadays demo in electronic keyboard which imitates the voices of all musical instruments helps us to listen and learn to play music manually. No electronic keyboard, quartz clock nor door bell that contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board connected to speaker can beat the real music-boxes.
Thank you for making such a wonderful video:). This song is sublime and brings back memories of my Late Father, who like the Operetta, "The Merry Window". All of your music boxes sound so high quality:).
A very fine interpetation of this splendid piece of music!
Merci beaucoup cette valse est magnifique et très romantique .je ne l'avais jamais entendu sur un appareil comme celui ci
Merci ++++
I have this song on a record and recognized it immediately, so beautiful!!
Absolutely brilliant! Blessings from New York!

Love wish I had a music box like this
100 лет, а звук - неподражаем!!! (passed 100 years, and the sound is unsurpassed)

Hi again MusicBoxBoy,
Just a word of thanks for your reply to my enquiry about mira discs and the sound varieactions of mira boxes.
I have not yet got a box but hoping to aquire a 18 1/2" or a 15 1/2" or both soon.
I only hope i can get some discs like the wonderfull ones you have, also that the box will sound as good as yours.
Very Best Regards again and thank again from Ireland.
JIM.
@bootsamou Thank you for the nice comment.
I'm an analogue man in a digital world!
This waltz I have on my Fotuna music box, together with the "Maxim" piece, which you can hear on the MusikalischeRomanzen channel. - At Jim: Some 18,5" Mira boxes have different keys to this one, but most of these models are tuned in F major like this one. There are also Mira 18,5" boxes, which are tuned half a key higher.
This was my first record, the Merry widow waltz from 1924!
"Witwe" - NOT "Wittwe" ;-) Greetings from Germany
@mayatatyana1 Thank you Maya! Always a pleasure to see a comment from you!
@amiedetherese You are very welcome! Always nice to see a comment from you.
@famouswolfy Thanks famouswolfy! Always nice to see a comment from you.
Do you have any recordings of old juke boxes or coin-operated pianos, anything where you have to drop a coin in the slot to prime the machine? In the '70s there was an LP called "Nickel Music," sadly not on CD, but you could hear the coin hit home, the machine fire itself up, and then the music. Sometimes it seemed like the machine had to make a physical effort to get out of neutral.
Hi MBB, it's great, that you only play original discs. Such instruments aren't built any more, o you only should present the repertoire, which was made for these instruments (only reproducting original discs is a great work, especially for people, who have a damaged disc with this original melody). - If you like, you can present your 2nd Mira 18,5" box, when it sounds OK, for comarison.
Hello! I was wondering if I could use this video's audio recording for a zoom production of "Happy Days". Thank you for your time!
@emilygclarinet Thanks!
Greetings from Germany! "Wittwe" is wrong, it's written with a single "t" (Witwe).
By the way - if "die lustige Witwe" is a man, he is called "der lustige Witwer".
Hi MusicBoxBoy,
You have wonderfull selections. I am in the process of byeing a 18 1/2" Mira.
Question : Can these discs still be got, either originals or reproductions ???
The quality of the sound from your box is just great, do all 18 1/2" empress sound the same ?
Really nice to hear such wonderfull titles.
Best Regards from JIM in IRELAND
bis in die Zeit vor dem 1. Weltkrieg hat man Witwe mit 2 t geschrieben, es ist kein Schreibfehler
