  • The EMKD is for its time a complicated high-end pinwheel machine. It supports semi-automatic multiplication as well as fully automatic division. Electrically my machine is not safe. It’s not grounded and to make things worse inside the motor there is a 75kOhm connection with the motor housing; I can’t use it without an isolation transformer.

Yes, my copy has the same hidden switch. It does show clear signs of use. However, I couldn't find an obvious way to get the digits out of sync with the input register. One reason I can think of is that it might be difficult to assure proper mounting during production. If I remember well, the construction doesn't allow for easy disconnection of pin wheel and number wheels. So maybe the hole was there for a simple post production allignment.
Anyway, the switch won't be there without a good reason. You made me curious.

    Thank you for this video.
I just bought the same machine out of order : at least, I know what she must do !

Wish you success in getting it operational. It's a sturdy machine and not very complicated.

My Walther EMKD runs without any issues now, indeed I used an isolation transformer for safety, thanks for the tip! But I have another small question: I was wondering what the purpose is of the black hole directly at the left from the number wheels on the input register. I actually found out that if there is a misfit between the number besides the pin wheel lever and the number shown in the register, then you can push with the tip of a pen in the hole to decouple the pins from the number wheels and to correct the error. As if the Walther engineers were aware of this technical issue but offered also a tool for easy repair. Is that also with your machine? Or could it have some other function?

I understood from your website that you operate the Walther EMKD in combination with an isolation transformer for safety. But isn't an earth leakage circuit breaker equally safe? Reason I ask is because I am currently also starting the repair of a Walther EMKD.

When I measured it, my EMKD showed a 75 kOhm resistance with the housing. The resulting current when touched won’t kill me. It will just feel rather unpleasant. However, because of this measurement as well as its age I don’t fully trust its electrical safety. A reliable earth leakage circuit breaker would be suitable as a final protection against electrical injury. However, these circuit breakers are electrical devices which may fail to operate within their specs.
I prefer an isolation transformer because of its inherent safety.
Wish you success repairing your machine.
