Great to hear about the new family members swimming around in your pond. The forum is always on my mind and do intend on re-establishing it. @ThePondDigger Welcome! We got set back a day making several trips to Home Depot trying to figure out the right PVC fittings to buy. Our flex hose didn't fit the given adapters for the Easy Pro Pump 2200 (we got from your website! Thank you!) and the waterfall filter outlet is a 0.5" bigger than the Mag Drive discharge. So far, it took three of us 2 hours to dig a hole 9' x 8' x 1' deep in an area riddled with tree roots from an old pine tree. Can't wait to get back at that hole today!

    A rule of thumb I use a lot is 1000 to 1200 gallons per hour per foot as a minimum is what most people consider attractive over a flat spillway stone. 1500 to 2000 gallons per hour per foot has more of a punch both visually and audibly. There is something tranquil about a waterfall that is running 800 to 1000 gallons per hour per foot. A well built waterfall should look great at many different flow rates. Best of luck to you.

  • @ThePondDigger
    @ThePondDigger  12 лет назад

    @MrBigfishbrad A 10k pond can certainly be managed with a couple of waterfall filters and a large skimmer. We typically review the goals and expectations of the pond with the soon to be pond owner before suggesting life support systems. I'd gladly look at your design before you pull the trigger. Let me know.

    Rigid pond liner is difficult to work with. Rubber liner is really easy to work with and should cost you less money than a rigid liner. What you are asking can be done. I just don't think I could describe techniques with text.

    beautiful pond your showing off, nice falls, great water clarity too! Bout time someone else stood up for bamboo, it gets SUCH a bad rap like you said. I have 7 species of bamboo growing on my property and I have not experienced any of the problems that scares people away from such an amazing plant. Nice job Digger!!

    A cheap cool way to is get a plastic 55 gallon drum, cut off the top & bottom, then cut it in half! Bury it in the ground leaving approx 2" above grade and plant your bamboo in there. Add mulch around the lip of the barrel that sticks above grade to disguise it & check it twice a year to make sure runners don't try & jump over the lip! Fast, easy and cheap! When we plant CLUMPING Bamboo we don't worry about root barriers because it is not invasive and easy to control. Best of luck to you!

  • @ThePondDigger
    @ThePondDigger  13 лет назад

    @Roninlord25a I couldn't tell you a thing about planting in PA as I'm a Southern California boy. Many varieties of bamboo can tolerate snow. You can choose from running bamboo as well, you just need to be sure and use rhizome barriers when planting to contain it.

    Most of these plants have no soil around the roots. The root systems on the plants are growing in the rock and gravel. If you live in an area with a harsh winter you will have to pick your aquatic plants specific to your area. When you pick the proper aquatic plants they will go dormant and rebound each winter.

    Let's Bamboo You Cazee!!! The first two species of clumping bamboo I want you to consider in AZ are Bambusa oldhamii (Oldham’s Bamboo) and Bambusa vertricosa (Buddha’s Belly). Remember this rule of thumb for bamboo. The first year the sleep, Second year they Creep, 3RD year they LEAP!

    @slamansj I'm a big fan of UV filters. You can balance some ponds without UV and others just flat out need UV to keep the pond in check. The trick getting the right size UV for your pond, installing it with the proper flow rates and maintaining the bulb. I see too many people spend money on UV filters that are wrong for their pond or install them incorrectly. UV filters are not bad.

    I rule of thumb for a waterfall spillway is 1000 gph per 1 foot of spillway. Here are the variations....
    If you have a flat piece of slate the 1000 gph per foot flow rate will be visually appealing however if use the same flow rate over a smooth round stone it may be a bit of a let down. So if you have a flat stone with an angular edge the water falls off of, then the rule of thumb flow rate can be very appealing. More flow is almost always better but a great waterfall can have 800 gph or less.

Btw, I built my pond early this spring, bought a couple of koi from Kodama and they spawned. We actually have a couple of baby koi swiming around the pond now. We are so excited. @lazyboyinc The cleaning of the filters is really determined by the quantity and size of the fish in the pond. Most of these mechanical bio filters should be cleaned quarterly. Some pond owners do it once or twice a year while we have other clients that clean them monthly.

    Great videos and thanks for taking the time to respond to comments. Those responses can be as informative as the videos. You've been a great help during my current project...used to refer to it as a pond, now I'm referring to it more as a backyard wildlife habitat. I like your waterfall flows, do you typically stick with a standard like 150 gph per inch of width?

    @ThePondDigger Eric, I hope you and all your wonderful staff had a great Christmas. Gearing up for this new pond build. And my head is spinning. Really struggling with the pond shape with the allotted area I have to build in. It looks as though this pond may be close to 10,000 gallons. Is that to big to run on a biofall setup. I figure I’ll need at least two bio falls and a big skimmer like the one in this video. What are your thoughts?
