    I have a theory with The Price is Right. If you watch an intro of the show from each year the show has been on: 1972-present, you get a perfect representation of the changing culture.

    Johnny Olson=irreplaceable. He and Bob Barker really were the pinnacle in game-show MCing. Combined with Barker's Beauties like Holly Hallstrom, Dian Parkinson and Janice Pennington, their collaboration from 1977-85 was the best that any game show could ever boast. Almost miraculous.

      I'd love it if they started airing TPIR reruns again. Buzzr has reruns of the Bill Cullen version from the 50s and 60s, but they have yet to air any of the current series. If GSN doesn't do it (and even if they do), then it would be great to see some Johnny Olson-announced episodes from the 70s and 80s, and maybe even some of the episodes that Rod Roddy announced too.

    Yeah, the 1976-1979 edit of Walking (the proper name of the Come on Down cue) has a more put-together orchestration, sounds a bit better than the 1979-2007 version

    @uwtitanfan  17 лет назад +5

    I had about 2 dozen tapes of eps that I taped from '97 to around '99. Then they got destroyed when our septic system failed and flooded our basement which is where I had them. I tried to save them, but the oxide coating was destroyed and my VCR could only play a few secs before the heads would clog up. All I have left are two tapes, one of which thankfully was from GSN's 25th year day long special.

  • @DENo1MatchGameFan
    @DENo1MatchGameFan 15 лет назад +7

    Johnny Olson owned "Come On Down", and Rod Roddy was a worthy successor, but Rich Fields doesn't even come close!

    • @blind_t2
      @blind_t2 7 лет назад +3

      DENo1MatchGameFan true, but in all honesty, if i had to choose a modern-day announcer that did it after rod passed on, Rich would so be a better fit than George. Not bashing him, no disrespect, he's a good one, but rich must have watched price to keep suspense, especially during a car game. He had that part down to a T! He knew Bob's wording, and when to come in with that impact, that "wow" factor! With george, not feeling it much! Cash games, a little, but a car? Not really.

    • @hotwax9376
      @hotwax9376 4 года назад +3

      I was born after Johnny Olson died, so I grew up with Rod and Rich announcing. Watching clips of Rod's announcing, I'm sometimes disappointed with how low-key his "Come on down" could be at times compared to Johnny, Rich, or George. Of course, nobody could touch Johnny or Rod. And now that Mike Richards is on his way out the door, I hope CBS and Fremantle will reverse his decision to dismiss Rich, though I doubt it will actually happen.

You get the feeling from the very first video, as it was the first year of the permanent hour long episodes, and especially with the updated come on down music replacing the much less exciting music used from 1972-1975, that this was the beginning of something much more epic and fun that would last for countless years to come.

    There's actually three different versions of the current come on down music. The first, in the first two intros, the other ones use the second generation music, which was recorded the same time as the first, but with different instrumentation, and the current version which is a 1983 re-recording of the 1975 version. I know of one ep from 1975 that aired on gsn that used the second gen come on down music when they still were using the original music

      I love all your knowledge of the come on down theme! It is my favorite game show theme ever. It is so perfectly orchestrated for what it's used for, so exciting and matches the atmosphere of the contestants running down to contestants row with that light border. It just all matches so well. I had no idea that the version from 1983 to 2007 was different. How can you tell the difference in the timbre? I think I can tell that the 1979-1983 sounds a bit deeper which I like better.
