- This tearjerker was the first million selling song.
words and music by Charles K. Harris
arranged by Joseph Clauder
published by Chas. K. Harris, New York City
sung by sheet music singer, Fred Feild
piano according to the sheet music
1. A little maiden climbed an old man's knee
Begged for a story, "Do Uncle please."
Why are you single, why live alone?
Have you no babies, have you no home?
"I had a sweetheart, years, years ago
Where she is now pet, you will soon know
List to the story, I'll tell it all
I believed her faithless after the ball"
Refrain:
After the ball is over, after the break of morn
After the dancers' leaving, after the stars are gone
Many a heart is aching, if you could read them all
Many the hopes that have vanished after the ball
2. Bright lights were flashing in the grand ballroom
Softly the music, playing sweet tunes
There came my sweetheart, my love, my own
"I wish some water, leave me alone"
When I returned, dear, there stood a man
Kissing my sweetheart as lovers can
Down fell the glass, pet, broken, that's all
Just as my heart was after the ball
3. Long years have passed, child, I've never wed
True to my lost love, though she is dead
She tried to tell me, tried to explain
I would not listen, pleadings were vain
One day a letter came from that man
He was her brother, the letter ran
That's why I'm lonely, no home at all
I broke her heart, pet, after the ball
A very sentimental ballad. This is grand emotion. The man and woman both suffered with broken hearts their whole lives; after the ball. In those days a lot of people enjoyed being shocked, feeling sad, even crying over a song. Charles Harris was so successful that he became a music publisher and moved from Milwaukee to New York City. There's a RUclips video of him singing this song.

I was born in 1943. My mother and also my grandmother sometimes sang this song to me when I was put to bed. There were other old songs also, but right now I can't think of them. For some reason, this song popped into my head today. Maybe because Memorial Day is tomorrow. My dearest grandmother is long gone, and my mother died almost 25 years ago...too soon.
Beautiful!
When did born your mother?
Cause I was born in 1920, my mother and my father were born in 1900, my father died in 2000 and my mother died in 2002
@@bruceleehace20anos17 Good to hear from you. My mother was born in 1922. My grandmother was born in 1899. I see that your mother and father lived long lives of 100+ years. And you, dear one, are 100 years old. My goodness. Your family is certainly blessed with longevity. I hope all of them are good years.
@@an645 Yes, almost everyone in my family lives over ninety, I had an uncle who lived 110 years, he died in 2012. And yes, all the years were good until 1929, the great depression was hard, but my family knew how to cope with it. .
I hope you and your family live much goods years!
@@bruceleehace20anos17 Wow, the stories you could tell from your long life. I bet so many would love to listen.
@@imtaliesen yes 100 years are great number If we're talking about age. I could tell you sometimes if you want!
At first I didn't like the 'imperfect' singing. However after listening to it several more times I think it actually adds to its sad and haunting nature. Almost like the character himself is singing. I think this is my favorite rendition.
The voice feels perfect. You can imagine the uncle sing the story to his niece.
The song was a colossal hit, up there with the best of today, back in the 1890s. It was sung all over the world and hugely popular in Britain and its Empire as well as America. It is of course the song used dramatically towards the end of Kern`s hit musical, "Showboat".
I was reading about "Hello Dolly" and this play was mentioned as close in plot.
Was there ever any problem between the producers of the two musicals (though they were many years apart) because of the similarities?
🎶🎶 after the ball was over.
Maggie took out her glass eye.
Put her false teeth in water,
Closed up her powder and dye.
Put her false leg in the corner.
Hung up her wig on the wall.
And all that was left went night night,
After the ball 🎶🎶
😁
🤣🤣
Dude sounds like Kermit (in a good way)
I was thinking Scooter, in a great way.
Bravo! I'm so wrapped up in this song!
Murdoch Mysteries: The Devil Inside brought me here.
Me to.
Very good episode of a very good show
Anyone remember the Funny version of this? When I was little (over 55 years back) my grandma sang different words, to the refrain, .. something about ''after the ball was over .. she took of her wig .. her false eye ... her false leg .. " but it was actually funny , like that "on top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese, .. I lost my poor meatball,.. when somebody sneezed," song.. anyone ? thanks
I was looking for that version
On Top of Old Smokey.
J P I remember the funny version as well. Here is a link to the various parodies. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_the_Ball_(song).
oh hey guys I just saw that people were asking about the parody version I put the words up there. That was the one I remember the most. There you go.

Great song, a nice example of XIX sigle United States popular songs. All the best from Argentine.
I just found this! I had my earbuds in and I was singing at the top of my lungs! One of the things that I miss, is that most of the grown-ups that played musical instruments in my family, (usually by ear), they are gone now, so I don't have accompaniment 😔, and if I recall a song, I must croon it acapella. This was absolutely fabulous! A delight, a treat!
Side note, I had a bit of a humorous family, so part way through I started singing the words that we were taught in humor! Lol! (Re: Maggie!)
i remember these old day when i was young, used to listen it with my friends now me and my friends are 152 years old
This is the song that brought me to your channel a couple of years ago (from Murdoch Mysteries which had this song).I found you again and subscribed. Thank you for the songs of yesteryear. I’m discovering so many good ones.
As an German, I really love the good old, American music and want to print songs like this. Where can I print this fantastic song?

@@sheetmusicsinger9651 Thank you very much my Friend. In Bavaria, where I came, we sayed: "Dankscheen. Du bist amoi a guada Mo." ("Thank you. You're a good man")
Than ks for giving me a chance to hear again the songs my mother sang back in the 1840s
Odd that the composer Charles K. Harris performed this song in the key of G, yet the sheet music he wrote is in Bb.
Thank you for providing this valuable resource for those of us who perform at "period events"!
You're welcome! Love these good old songs. Let's hang on to them.
My great great grandfather Henry was born in 1889 just 3 years before
I had to hear this song after reading about it in Midnight Bayou by Nora Roberts
The last part was a little different- and less sad- when I first heard it: "If you see Cinderella/Over the garden wall/Tell her Prince Charming was moonstruck/After the ball". Must have been a change.
Hmm, I'm still kind of suspicious. How was the girl kissing her *brother* that the guy got that jealous?
French?
Kristen-because the singer did not realize it was only her brother
This song is Plothole Central. If the girl wanted water, why did she have to kick out her boyfriend? If the man was kissing her " as lovers can" how can they be siblings? Thats incest! Why didn't the brother write sooner (or tell him in person?) The song makes much more sense without the third verse, which is almost always ignored. I'm certain Mr Harris had not thought of the 3rd verse until the song was finished. Its a very sloppy addition from a fine songwriter.
I love it!!! Thank you!
Nice song I had never heard before today as it is quite old but it is still nice to hear and enjoy.
Showboat is my favourite musical. I have it on Spotify and because the verse is so muffled, I decided to look up original lyrics.
So surprised to find there were 3 verses that told a sad story.
I was the lead singer in a small band that sang 50/50 music for dancing and I sang only the chorus for this song.
I regret I didn't know the verses back then.
I came here cause i heard this song on the end of an episode from Murdoch Mysteries.
My mother sang this song, and she felt moved by the sentiments therein. Her first two children died shortly after birth. She was advised not to have any more children. I am glad she didn’t listen. My mother and father had 12 more children. Their first and only marriage. We are all alive and healthy. Thanks be to God .
U must be old
That's way too many children and very irresponsible.
Hairy Mo , population is plunging downwards. The miracle gift of a child is amazing! It must be Everyone’s dream to have a child.
@@Randolph1233 How? Population is growing out of control!
@@scurly0792 , population in Europe is in rapid DECLINE.
Check the facts . In Britain we need 2.1 children per woman to maintain the population. It is 1.65 which is terminal decline. Britain needs asylum seekers more than asylum seekers need Britain.

i had to learn this song when i was in the 5th grade we did a skite called the gay 90's this was back in the 60 have fond memories from then
An evergreen sad song
I could hear Kermit the frog singing this
I was thinking Scooter.
I have been searching for an old ditty related to this song. This is how I remember one part.
After the ball was over,
Mary Took out her glass eye,
Put her false teeth in the tea pot,
Hung her hair up to dry,
Put her peg leg in the corner
Last line remembered as
Nothing was left of Mary
after the Ball
Does anyone know this ??? I would like to find it again and surprise my three older sisters. I remember that as children, they learned it from an Aunt.
Is this you singing the song or is it somebody else's rendition?
BRAVO...I always loved this tune but never knew the words...Blessings,
Wonderful :-)
...?!
Thanks to "sheet music singer", one can listen too all verses, and a special thanks to you tube!
OK... But why was her brother "kissing her as lovers can"? 🤔
WSC eh
Thank you for sharing the full song.
uncle scrooge love that
Literally here because of school work.
Wow! What subject and what year of school?
It is the first time I listen this weird song. According wikipedia, this is one of the first songs in Ballad. Interesting.
Here while reading To Paradise
My mother sang this- but a rather different version involving leaving your peg leg in the corner, hanging up your wig in the hall....
I too was born in 1943. The song my parents sang to me was "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."
Heard this sung in a movie on tv. I think my nana used to sing it when i was little. She also sang "bicycle built for two" and yankee doodle dandy, and I was afraid to go home in the dark😊
I’m playing this at a school play thank you for the sheets and audio
the vocals are too forward in the mix but thank you for the rendition
you really sound like you putting your soul into it. some would argue its imperfect or not good but I think it adds to the old elegant quality to the music. Great performance overall.

I only ever knew the first verse.
The 2nd verse makes this song even more tragic.
