Adam hope you are near a rape seed field (aka Wild mustard and Canola plants) because the bees extract lots of nectar out of them.
The winter in Canada is colder than where Kamon is, so you may want to check Ian Steppler's videos also Michael Palmer's and see how they protect their hives from the winter cold.
The most important thing for a beekeeper is to prevent bees from swarming.
When a colony swarms the queen and the forager bees gorge themselves on honey and pollen leaving behind a depleted colony with nurse bees (they can't fly just yet), brood, lots of useless drones and few queen cells. There is only an 80% chance that the new queen survives but it will take a month for you to find out, Kamon has real good videos about how to prevent swarming.
      Good luck with your bees.

Thanks Adam and Mark! When it comes to wintering in a cold area my experience is nil. Healthy bees is the first step and the hardcore winter prep is something that Palmer, Ian and other northern Beekeepers can help you with.

I think it's absolutely awesome that you are able to get all of the sponsors so you will be able to do the extensive testing that y'all plan on doing. Trying to do it out of your own pocket would definitely be costly for sure. I had purchased seven Apimaye double deep hive boxes and put them in one of my yards. The bees are doing so well in them that I contacted Korhan from Apimaye and ordered 16 more. Your name came up in our conversation and he said he would be really interested to know how the bees did in these two different climates (Tennessee and Massachusetts) as far as overwintering goes. Anyway, I am looking forward to the next installment in this series and as I have said in the past I will be following it closely. Thanks for sharing.

Laurel couldn't do this herself and Kamon can't either but as a team you guys are great. I work with ag research and know all about variables which no one can control. That is why we look at multiple year data and replicated. With corn plots we look at 10 to 20 replications in order to feel confident in our data. Those numbers would be hard to replicate with bees but sometimes we see trends with lower reps and we get to weed out the worst at least.

They RELEASE THE QUEEN who then begins to lay the winter bee eggs and feel confident that mites wont be in the hole with the eggs. I am 99% sure the University of Minnesota and the University of Guelph have done this kind of mite research.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 года назад +11

Sure they have. How many people read those research Docs vs. watch a video? Not the way it should be but it is the way it is. Also, that is way north of many beekeepers. They don't produce mites like we do. We need to test things here in subtropical Tennessee. I also would argue it will be more meaningful getting to see the management side of things past a data sheet. We need them to keep doing what they are doing and we need to do what we are doing. The best scientists I know are also great beekeepers. I think you could say that the other way around as well. This first year we are using the basic treatments. Then when we branch off we will have already have a beginning foundation so we can dial it in from there. One of the main goals is to encourage more people to do their own testing and I believe this series will do that. Is what I am doing going to be as scientific as theirs probably not. (Yet)

Yea but who want to read a technical paper and not see exactly how they came to those conclusions? I’d much rather watch a video and be able to see how the study was conducted.

Would like to add that an issue that has been brought up this season is the quality control of chemical products. This type of experimentation helps keep the manufactures honest. Thank you Kamon.

Part of primary research is reproducing results other people get. Universities have of course done this kind of research, but as a scientist, understand that Kamon’s combination of variables are unique to his yards, and the information he’s gathering will be priceless.

Are you guys going to use that mite tracking app? I know that may be tedious with the number of hives you are monitoring but since you are still counting the bees the info might be valuable. I’m excited to see you results this year.

This is a question going out to Kamon. I have a swarm situation I’m not sure how to deal with. Did a Taranov split on a hive that was busting at the seams two weeks ago. Original hive had queen cups galore some with royal jelly and at least one with larvae. Split is doing really well. Now the original hive is busting at the seams with a fully charged swarm cell! Again!! The bees started to swarm yesterday but turned around and went back to the hive. The hive was covered face and partial sides. Weather has probably not been warm enough for its queen to mate. 68 max. Any suggestions? Weather was very windy and rainy today. I can see them crowding the doorways. Any help is appreciated.

I think this is very interesting and I am looking forward to it. However for it to be a proper control hive you should leave it untreated and see the results properly. Leaving them untreated until the mite loads increase doesn’t really show anything. To be scientifically accurate you should leave the control hives untouched. Great videos and best of luck with it

Will you try non treatment of bees to allow them to develop natural resistance and hygenic behavior. I have bees from a hive abandoned for a year and they have a very low mite count. They have never been treated and I intend not to either,
. In the uk we are moving towards non treatment to get the chemicals out of the bees and the fit will survive to live on and so on.

The bees I got from you are doing great and I had a swarm move into an old Nuc I set up as a swarm trap. Long story short I forgot about it and went to pull some frames from the nuc and saw all these bees lol. Keep up the great work!

In Germany the number of varroa is measured per 50 grams of bees. Saves a lot of counting.

My God Sr i can’t believe what a nice bee farm you can build. I Pay to Manlake LTd a bee package on December. They keep my money and when they supposed to send the bees they don’t have it. And they don’t care that they keep my money for all this time when I can pay the heat bill

Many beekeepers like myself are dropping it. Didn't work for me and several of my friends. Combined we spent over 18k on it last year. All of us did follow up washes and didn't like what we saw. I may test Apivar later but I also want to get away from synthetics and in order to do that I need to better understand the other products

@@kamonreynolds I can see that since I got a bad batch in the fall of 2019. The other batch numbers worked just fine but still lost over 30 hives..
Have not had a problem since then. I am beginning to hear of more who got bad batches...

Every keeper has their own way and each State/Area has different plant, heat, flows and more. I want to see how it turns out. Thank you Kamon you can never make everyone happy. Just make yourself happy and thats what counts. As i told one person this week. Suck it up cupcake and when he still threw a fit i told him how about i break his legs so he could walk it off. Keep on BEE keeping on Kamon Thank You

I put a swarm in a box and brought them home. Just a halve mile of distance. The next evening I saw what I believe was a queen fly into the hive. Could I have Missed her or did she go on a mating flight?
