Telugu language is a cousin of Kannada. The pronunciation is clearly distinct between all three letters. That is one reason a lot of Karnatic music is either in Telugu or Kannada.

As a Telugu speaker who had early schooling in the early 70s, I learnt 3 different sounds sa (స, स), Sa (శ , श) sha (ష, ष). Never recall producing the 'sh' sound while referring to God Siva (శివ, not as Shiva), or SrI (శ్రీ, and not as ShrI). Same sounds continued when I learnt Sanskrit, Hindi, and other Indian languages too. Argued with other Indian friends if the King (or train station in Mumbai) is to be called SivAji or ShivAji! Wish I could truly learn the true sounds of these three letters!

🤣🤣🤣 I watched this video till 2:47 min mark and the moment Bengali & Gujarati was mentioned, I was like, holy shiit, now I know what the pronunciation would be, and my imagination ran wild. And I cannot speak Sanskrit, but can read it. My issue with Sanskrit, when I used to study it as a school subject till 9th std (long ago) was "sandhi-viched" positions. I guess I need to try reading it more, as I found just 2 days ago, while watching Ai-giri Nandini bhajan, I could easily read it with voice playing. Great work 👌👌

I personally suggest all to listen వర లీల గాన లోల (Vara leela gana lola) keerthanam by Shri Tyagaraja Swamy. Despite of the original language Telugu, it is still one of the best learning tools for similar sound for any language following Devanagari Aksharam.

It is not तमिळ either. That ழ of Tamil is NOT found in any other language. You have to fold your tongue while pronouncing it. It's called Tamil's very own alphabet.

Bengalis definitely need to improve… it is Sarasvatī not Shoroshoti. It is Bhagavatī, not Bhogoboti. It is Jagaddhatrī, it is not Jogoddhatri. These priests doing Durga puja, Kali puja, Saraswati puja, etc. need to learn Sanskrit properly before they are even allowed to do puja publicly.
This is one of the reasons why many Gurus insist that you must ask a trained pandit / archarya to do paath from the Vedas and even Durga Saptasathi ( Purana).
Even in kannada we have 3 distinct letters ಸ ಶ and ಷ. But we pronounce SriRama differently. But a Telugu person uses S instead of Sh while chanting. Which is not right while chanting mantras. The meaning differs.

No we dont. You got to use melika Śa (శ) , and you have to put an accent like Śankara, Śarada, Śanthi, Śiva. All three letters and their pronunciations are very distinct in Telugu. (స, स) , Śa (శ,श) and sha (ష, ष).
Nice discussion. I do not undermine the importance of pronunciation, but the example of Vritrasura and Indra is more applicable when one does chanting for "kamya-prayoga". When the desire of the sadhaka is to realize devotion for the deity then such errors get corrected in due course of time by the mercy of the devata itself.
How can we, as a upAsaka, put the burden of pronunciation on the devatA. We need to ask if incorrect pronunciation can help us invoke the blessing of the devatA. Often we can hear some people say वोम instead of ऊँ. If the praNava itself wrongly articulated, what can one say about the rest of the mantra or sUkta. It is like being mixed up with boldface x and italic x while writing a mathematical paper...let the reader figure out....(in due course of time ?) Let us accept that our pronunciation is misplaced and strive to correct ourselves.

I can speak for Gujaratis. The distinction of three સ ષ શ are there and some communities are very particular about it. However, there are groups uses “apabhransh”
नमस्कारम् श - स pronunciation issue reflects in normal usage too than in recitation of mantram. From my observation especially in South India, in Malayalam majoritypeople pronunce ശ as സ sound. Example, ശ്രീരാം , ശ്രീജ, ശ്രീരംഗം are pronounced as സ്രീരാം, സ്രീജ, സ്രീരംഗം. This is also reflected in pronunciation of the same sound in many devotional and classical songs.

Hello Sir, I think the second example should be still Sastra as per Telugu, we don't call them as Shastra. You mentioned sha for second and third examples. I do feel bad when native speakers use Shivani instead of Sivani or Shiva instead of Siva. Shankara instead of Sankara. North Indians can be exempted, I think they dont have శ sound or letter.

It’s nauseating to listen to Indians in media, movies, anchors , all kinds of educated people, they don’t use bha, dHa dhha, kHa , only Dr. khadar Vali speaks pure telugu and his pronunciation is so refreshing to hear !

Sir, even Telugu people replace श with स, keralites replace 'ka' with 'ga' and almost everyone replace ळ with ल(Ex:मुरळी will be called as मुरलि) majority of North indians don't know the difference between ण and न. They pronounce both of them as न. and finally they remove the 'अ(a)' sound of every word.. Even Pandits reading mantra do this disaster... making Bhārat out of Bhārata or Rām out of Rāma , जै out of जय(Jaya) and so on... e-stri out of Stri (They say estri(meaning iron box) sukha praptirastu) and so on...
I believe that in spoken Malayalam when we pronounce samskrutam origin words we focus less on the pronunciation, but when speaking formal or shudha Malayalam we make an active effort to enunciate these distinctions. Most major Dravidian language alphabets after all has evolved over time to let us accurately transcribe samskrutam in to our regional language.

In kannada language, there is no problem of mispronounciation of sanskrit words, as the alphabet is similar to sanskrit and all 3 letters are different and Alpa Prana and mahaprana distinction is also very clear.
That’s why I only listen. I already have O.C.D tendencies. Not connecting to something helpful in fear of getting it wrong is a challenge. I know I’m tuning to some level of mastery when I listen to this channel.

In odia we have 3 'sa' dantesa,talbesha,mudhnesha....!!odia vocabulary and word pronunciation almost similar to sanskrit so while reading Sanskrit we don't face any trouble compair to hindi speaking ppl.

I've heard almost everyone mispronouncing (even upon correcting) "bhAsita" as "bhAshita" lingam" in lingAshTakam. Both are not just differently meant, but completely negates the 'mauna-vyAkhya prakaTita parabrahma tattvam' of Mahadeva, if you wrongly say that Shiva lingam is pleasantly talking instead of pleasantly glowing!😂

I do feel bad when native speakers use Shivani instead of Sivani or Shiva instead of Siva. Shankara instead of Sankara. North Indians can be exempted, I think they dont have శ sound or letter.

It’s nauseating to listen to Indians in media, movies, anchors , all kinds of educated people, they don’t use bha, dHa dhha, kHa , only Dr. khadar Vali speaks pure telugu and his pronunciation is so refreshing to hear !

you have to put an accent like Śankara, Śarada, Śanthi, Śiva. It is between Shiva and Siva.
There are three sa in telugu, sa like in samsaram సంసారం, sha like in shadjamam షడ్జమం, saa like in Sarat kalam శరత్ కాలం.
These must be thought properly well to children in school so that they have correct pronunciation.

Sir, even Telugu people replace श with स, keralites replace 'ka' with 'ga' and almost everyone replace ळ with ल(Ex:मुरळी will be called as मुरलि) majority of North indians don't know the difference between ण and न. They pronounce both of them as न. and finally they remove the 'अ(a)' sound of every word.. Even Pandits reading mantra do this disaster... making Bhārat out of Bhārata or Rām out of Rāma , जै out of जय(Jaya) and so on... e-stri out of Stri (They say estri(meaning iron box) sukha praptirastu) and so on...
I believe that in spoken Malayalam when we pronounce samskrutam origin words we focus less on the pronunciation, but when speaking formal or shudha Malayalam we make an active effort to enunciate these distinctions. Most major Dravidian language alphabets after all has evolved over time to let us accurately transcribe samskrutam in to our regional language.
No brother ,in Telugu we have శ and స separately. And we don't replace anything,😃

In kannada language, there is no problem of mispronounciation of sanskrit words, as the alphabet is similar to sanskrit and all 3 letters are different and Alpa Prana and mahaprana distinction is also very clear.
That’s why I only listen. I already have O.C.D tendencies.

Being a telugu person, I can confirm the arth and ardh mispronounciation. Although we read it properly, when we speak it os mispronounced.
In odia we have 3 'sa' dantesa,talbesha,mudhnesha....!!odia vocabulary and word pronunciation almost similar to sanskrit so while reading Sanskrit we don't face any trouble compair to hindi speaking ppl.

Disaster.. in bengali language there is no pronunciation of Hindi wala स it's all श type pronunciation. Does that means we all pronounce mantras wrong???
In bundelkhand श स and ष is same. Similarly ब and व is same.

I've heard almost everyone mispronouncing (even upon correcting) "bhAsita" as "bhAshita" lingam" in lingAshTakam. Both are not just differently meant, but completely negates the 'mauna-vyAkhya prakaTita parabrahma tattvam' of Mahadeva, if you wrongly say that Shiva lingam is pleasantly talking instead of pleasantly glowing!😂

Everything is okay.. context is important. If we can learn pronunciation then good. If not, Bajan and sankirthan is always amazing.
My take is that
It's OK for bhajans and all. But one needs to be careful while reciting Mantras and shlokas. Extra careful while recitation of Vedic mantras
