And the Su-52 was clearly superior to the other option in the Soviet competition- the Ilyushin Il-52 (later re-designated the Il-102 as Ilyushin tried to salvage their development costs by offering it for export after the Soviet Air Force rejected it). And the Il-52 was just an updated Il-40 (a Korean War vintage design that was cancelled after adoption when only 5 production aircraft had been built), which was really just a jet engined Il-2
It actually is. Although this videos gives a very superficially description on Su-25 specific stuff (like flight control systems having rods 3-5 times thicker than fighters, or engine capable of surviving MANPAD) it really has same concept in mind. -Reinforced control systems -Well protected engine (especially for Il-2, but Su-25 has them on different sides for the same reason as Eurocopter Tiger has plate between them) -Rockets over guns (not the case for Il-2 with 37mm, but in general they had 82mm and 132mm HEAT rockets, while Su-25 has S-8, S-13, S-25, X-25L/29L) So it's pretty much the same plane.
It suffers a relatively high attrition rate purely due to its role as a CAS platform. If you're getting down low, slow and dirty to help the ground pounders out of a sticky situation then you are constantly exposed to danger within the combat zone; that's been the case since WW2. If you're a fighter then its all done as 'stand off' and you rarely see what you are shooting at. The men who fly these kind of platforms have to have a special suit to accommodate their unfeasibly large testicles!

Well figuring that the Soviets built probably the best-dedicated ground attack plane of WW2 I would have been amazed if this one had been anything other that an overwhelming success. Though I would like to see a comparison between the A10 and the SU-25.
The A-10 is superior in oretty.much every aspect, but that's partially to do with Fairchild taking some risks (that paid off) in their design and thus getting a more survivable aircraft, significantly due to the US specifying a larger, more capable aircraft in the A-X program, and finally due to the US using the typical American Cold War tactic of beating the enemy to death with bags of money. All in all, the Su-25 is a great CAS aircraft. The A-10 is better... but USAF politics means there are a lot fewer A-10s, because "Nobody ever got to be Chief of Staff of the Air Force by flying mudsmashers. The Bomber Mafia and the Pointy Nose Gang get the stars and the money."
@@geodkyt I dont know how did you decide that the A10 is superior in every way, but the general opinion is that both are about equally good. A10 carries 25% more weapons, while the Su25 is 25% faster, both are known to very resilient.
You like to spew bullshit it seems. You should read about the A-10s performance in the first Gulf War and the Blue/Blue issues it has faced. The A-10 is an overrated piece of shit that is comically inaccurate while being evidently obsolete, as it is only successful with GBUs (F-15, F-16, F-22, F-35, B-1, B-2, soon to be the B-21, AH-64s, AH-1Zs, etc also deploy with success). Your political points are actually accurate, but your conclusion is misguided. They're still in service BECAUSE of POLITICS, it would have been retired years ago if not.
Don't understand alot of the comments below, but the effectiveness of su25 really depends whether the airspace is contested and manpads. I doubt su25's equivalent can do better in the environment su25s usually work in.
@@garlicdragon8664Except its speed. Su25 is much faster (650km/h vs 950-1000km/h). Su25 is a better option now for the Ukrainians. They know how to use it and its much safer. Its not the middle east

Were the attack helicopters under army command and the planes all air-force? Where were the Frogfoots!!!
The SU-25 is the perfect example of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" there is only one other country that produces an aircraft like it, The Brits use to have the Blackburn Buccaneer but like the Harrier they thought it was a good idea to retire it.
@@tomwagemans1872 The A-10 is exactly in the same role. Odd how some people just love to post without having a solid base of knowledge to work with. Anyone who talks CAS airframes and doesn't know at least the A-10 and Su-25 cannot really be taken seriously as both airframes excel in this mission.
Let's keep in mind the a10 is only fielded when the US has total, and complete air superiority. The only reason it isn't retired is because of the war on terrorism. Russia continues to produce, and employ an aircraft in highly contested airspace.
Isn’t that what’s supposed to happen? It makes sense to capture air superiority with aircraft designed to do it. Then follow with cas as soon as possible using aircraft designed to do it. Kind of dumb to do it any other way is it not?
Because the A-10 has been proven obsolete and wildly unsuccessful. I recommend you read about its performance (lack of) during the Gulf War, and its required modernization (Makes the entire program pointless in the first place). Its cannon is dogshit, its purpose is better accomplished by almost every other modern fighter/attack based craft the US uses, and it is infamous for its blue-blue incidents.
Let's get one thing straight. Any airframe is a nightmare for ground troops. If it's a plane doing Close Air Support, we Americans are trained to roll on our backs, and unload as much fire as we can about a football field (or soccer pitch) ahead of the craft. Don't aim directly at something that fast. Use what we call "Kentucky windage". You don't use your sights, use your gut feeling.
One of the cooler planes around. The Su-57 is also super cool. Cover the Ka-52 Alligator and Ka-50 Black Shark next! Saw a video the other day of a Ka flying without its tail section, pretty badass tbh
Frogfoot, as well as Warthog, are planes for CAS in a scenario when Air supperiority is established. As Simon said in the end, any modern-ish figter would quickly outplay it, most likely not even in a dogfight-ish situation, but rather in a BVR missile(s) launch...
Well, yeah, if an F-35 can distinguish it from ground clutter (those things love to fly low), it's gonna kill the froggy before the froggy even knows it's dead.
I can just see a model diorama of two of these babies strafing in low n slow while a pair of warthogs come strafing in from the other side. Could look sick.

How brain dead are you? to assume a negative conotation.
It's interesting to look at the A-10's development competitor, the YA-9, and compare it to the SU-25. Similar design theory yet different eventual outcome.
The "frogfoot' is a way better aircraft then the A-10... No one.!!! No..one.. !! .. purchased an A-10.. Not one country bucket up and purchased an A-10.. .. no one .. And half the world purchased frogfoots for their military.. There is a reason for this .. I don't care what TV tells you.. peace my friend..
The difference ein outcome has to do with the quality of the competition in each design program. Suhkoi clearly had access to some of Northrop's drawings and data, and the YA-9 was a *very* good design that was neck and neck with the A-10. I'd argue that the YA-10 was superior to the YA-9, but it was a *really* close contest. The Su-25 faced off against a rewarmed Korean War vintage failure of an attempt by Iluyshin to build a "jet powered Il-2" (down to the tail gunner) that was quite simply, *bad* . The Soviets would have been insane not to pick the Su-25 over the Il-52.
I surprised you didn't even mention the similarities to the Northrop YA-9. There was a lot of cross pollination back then. Another good example would be the TU-160 and the B-1 Lancer.
People could you stop saying that the A-10 is better or Ukraine should receive the A-10 to replace the Frogfoot and such crap. No one wants the crappy A-10. Ukraine flat out refused to receive A-10s last Summer, with remarks that they couldnt babysitt it for its Combat Mission and even the Air Force tries to retire it for years now, but isnt allowed to, because of some dumb reasons. That was even the Reason why the Air Force recommended the Plane for Ukraine, to finally get rid of it. And dont forget all the blue on blue Accidents the A-10 had over the years...
@@patriktoth6258 Yeah, that's what I was going to type. the SU-25 strafes and leaves, the A-10 patrols. The A-10 also has many other issues, I mean, the Gulf War and Afghan revealed how shit it actually is/was.
I take a bit of issue with this (although I really enjoyed it!) Simon was so critical of the A-10 a while back but now the Frogfoot is all that and a bag of chips. You lie. Nothing in common. Planes look completely different. Su-25 has unique design for attack planes. It's just normal fake of your propaganda that screams that Russia's equipment is always copy of American. But situation is vica versa. Russia created first ground attack plane in the world - IL-2 and never left its leadership. First jet attack plane in the world was also Russian IL-40 and Su-25 was successor of it and Americans also copied many parts of it same as they copied Russian helicopter Yak-24 and created Chinook.
One of the biggest threats to close air support crafts is an intelligence operative with a truck full of shoulder fired surface to air missiles showing up like the ice cream truck guy.
It's not really built around it's weaponry, that is more true for the A-10. It is built to survive first, that's why the A-10, while a very resilient plane, is not quite the airborne tank the SU-25 is.
The Soviets initiated the CAS program that developed the Su-25 two years after the USAF initiated the A-X program (that resulted in the A-10). The Su-25 is *remarkably* similar (as in, "Billy, your homework has the same mistakes as Jimmy's homework, and you sit right next to each other" similar) to the runner-up in the A-X program - the Northrop YA-9 (which was, in testing, considered a quite good aircraft with excellent handling). Note the Ilyushin offering in the Soviet contest was a rewarmed Korean War vintage jet that failed (and was cancelled in 1956 after adoption before more than 5 aircraft could be built), so the Su-25 was certainly the correct choice by the Soviets in 1975 - itbavsolutely outperformed the Il-52 (later redesigned the Il-102) in testing.
Su-25 is not similar to A-10 at all. It's your dream. Su-25 is similar to IL-40 - first jet attack plane in the world. Americans also copied many parts of it.
That was based on propaganda information. Remember a year ago how they said Russia failed and was already defeated? Russia is winning by their standards, not ours.

-Reinforced control systems
-Well protected engine (especially for Il-2, but Su-25 has them on different sides for the same reason as Eurocopter Tiger has plate between them)
-Rockets over guns (not the case for Il-2 with 37mm, but in general they had 82mm and 132mm HEAT rockets, while Su-25 has S-8, S-13, S-25, X-25L/29L)
So it's pretty much the same plane.
