I don't mind the smell too much though. The price is just a problem because my wife likes them. You're supposed to tap them with a stick to choose the one you want. We bought some from a farm once when visiting the beach, for like 100 bucks total...

Your durian didn't smell like rotten corpses because you got it frozen. Freezing denatures the components that produce that foul odor, resulting in a scent that's far less intense. If you want the true durian experience, eat it fresh.

Pro-Tip on how to open a durian: There is a star-shape at the apex of the fruit, where the flower's style/pollen stem ends and the fruit begins. Use a knife to cut into the star and along the seams and then you can easily access the pods after pulling it apart from there.
Also, you never really want to open a fruit from the stem since that is where it's thickest.

I'm a Malaysian and we eat durians regularly. The way you cut the durian is that you need a tough knife and poke the bottom of the durian and twist the knife. With enough depth and force, the durian will break apart and split into (usually) it's six parts, then you'll need to pry the husk fraction with your hands and they'll come apart with the fruit sitting on one side of the husk.
This method is much easier and it makes the durian quite presentable. Tho I don't really care how you cut a durian, as long as it isnt a chop down the middle. That's like chopping an avocado down the middle.
Fun fact : the name "Durian" comes from the Malay word "Duri" and the prefix "-an", duri itself meant "thorns" and the prefix duri-an gives of the rough meaning of "thornage" or "to thorn"

I had the privilege of eating fresh Musang King once during a trip to Malaysia. Honestly, I didn't think it was that bad, tasted pleasantly sweet. and really not "foot-y" at all. The scent was strong, almost like a strong cheese, but not unbearably so. My biggest gripe was the texture, which I can only describe as if you mixed custard with raw squash. Also, Malaysians told me to have durian-flavored ice cream beforehand to see if I could tolerate the real deal, since it's supposed to be milder. That was a lie - the durian ice cream is ten times worse. For like an hour after eating it, very time I took a deep breath, I could just feel the used sock aftertaste in my mouth.
