- I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of Chicago 1930s, even more than New York, the American city par excellence: exponential development linked to the development of exceptional resources, all-out innovations, particularly in architectural matters, a very diverse population of origin and social relations.
In 1930s Chicago’s population reached 3 million.
Video Restoration Process:

Those illuminated signs are fantastic! SO much nicer than their cold, modern day flat screen LED replacements... the old neon signs definitely had a magic about them.
It's wild how the higher frame rate of these old clips makes them appear more 'modern' and brings them to life. So cool!!
Near the end, there is an advertisement to take the train to the San Francisco world Fair, which confirms that this is in 1939

Seems to be 1939, at 1:32 you see The Gorilla staring the Ritz Brothers, this was released 26 May 1939. Also the large Balaban & Katz banner states 22 years leadership, The Chicago-based Balaban & Katz theatre chain was formed in 1916 so banner went up in 1938. Starting at 2:45 right side a marquee ad show trains for the San Francisco Worlds Fair which opened from February 18, 1939, through October 29, 1939
This is absolutely incredible. Other than the cars and some signage, you would have no idea it was almost a century ago.

In 1953 our neighbor took us kids for an evening ride downtown to see the Buckingham fountain. On Lake Shore Drive from the South, the prominent object in the skyline was the sweep of the beacon on the Palmolive Building, its searchlight moving across the night sky across the lake.
They had to stop the beacon because of all the taller buildings in the area.
The Wrigley Building is/was magnificent.
@@jaldav indeed, time passing only ruins things that were ingenious more and more. Go take a gander at the comments on the videos of the 1893 world fair saying it is "not possible, even with 'todays' technology." This nonesense makes me absolutely livid.
I can imagine that too, a few years back they turned the light back on. I don’t know if it sweeps like it use to with the John Hancock behind it. Thanks for that memory.
Its an odd feeling for me. My Mom, who was born in Chicago in 1916 would have been 23 during the time of this video in the prime of her life. I miss her so much.
I’ve said this for so long and people look at me like I have 3 heads. YT is a virtual time machine. To a person from the 1800’s, to see us pulling this up on a phone or iPad and “go back” to see what it was like must be life changing. We take it for granted because we grew up with this tech. But to other eras, this is legit magic to them.

@@heyyou3133 Ai are pointless and have a hobby in undermining times before it; that is why they guess at colors and dim out a good time period, rendering it to feeling like a weak amount of the wonder it had, which was far more natural and normal in black and white and you could see the sorrounding area. When I was about five I fell out the back of my parents old car that had a running board. The running board saved my life for it broke my fall and gave my dad enough time to slow down before I fell off. Which I did. Then got up and waited on the sidewalk for them to come back and get me.
We moved from Boston to western suburbs of Chicago in 1963. Dad worked for an insurance company down on LaSalle St. He commuted via the old CB&Q everyday and walked from train station into the financial district; snow, rain, or shine. He took me to Wrigley Field many times - loved the Cubs - even on B&W WGN TV. Listened to WLS am radio.
I remember the Big Snow of ‘67, Brookfield Zoo, Adler planetarium, Science & Industry Museum, and the Art Museum on Michigan Ave.

Great job restoring and colorizing. When I was a child my mother used to take me to Marshall Fields during the Christmas season. I remember the escalators. That was in the 60's. Had a great childhood home in Morgan Park....built in 1883. My dad renovated it. Had a back staircase for the hired help back then. The attached garage in the backyard was very tall to accommodate the horse drawn carriages. The homes were spaced far apart...but then small modern homes were built in between the original homes starting in the late 40's. Loved the childhood home, I was lucky with that for sure!

In the early to mid-1990s, I was a floating salesman at that very store- which meant I could be on any one of the 14 floors helping a department on any given day. I also played Santa Bear (I was a theatre kid). That iconic location wouldn't be a Marshal Field's for much longer. I'm proud to have been a part of this company which wasn't just a name. I once quoted the founder to a customer after I overheard a snobby sales-person denying a woman a couple of extra gift boxes she kindly asked for. I said, "Marshal Field's himself said 'Give the lady what she wants!' I'll get some from the back room for you."
NASS you are a genius! We were used to lower quality old black and white footages which to some extent were a barrier with the past. But thanks to your talent and your magic the past becomes the present. And I must admit it's a very weird feeling. Because the people we are watching are no longer of this world. And yet they seem very much alive.

0:51 Balaban&Katz 1st successful air conditioning inside a movie theater. Movie theatres use to be a seasonal thing. Not so popular during the hot summers. Chicago was the 1st to perfect it inside movie theaters by pulling cold air from the chicago tunnels,and supplying it into vents.

The C&NW/UP sign at the end is advertising for the World's Fair in San Francisco. That puts the film between 1939 & 1940.

You drive down the highway today and there’s far fewer lights and less color than there was in those days, it was just more lively and exciting. I mean, those streetcars are just amazing.

In a million years I didn’t imagine scrolling lighted text signs were a thing in the 1930’s.
I looked up the Ritz Brothers “The Gorilla” and learned that it was released in 1939.

Chicago my city I grew up! after Capone!.1950 and! after church walking by I visited the garage on Clark st. valentine massacre! happens! as a child,
10! by a older cousin! told me the st valentine true story! we walk in!!curiosity! He showed the wall full of bullets holes! I place my finger on a brick ! wow remember like yesterday! never thought became historical place! or mafia! connection. I live on California, st. . Diversey Avenue , Humboldt park!! memory lane!.!! happy new year 2021. it's so weird! in 1999! I move to Florida st. south side 22 Avenue! 2 blocks down my friend Tony ! house! who I visited! he show nearby Al Capone house in Florida! near my place, 😁👍 it's !still there! .can't go in! of course! new residents.!! beautiful house! like southern plantation state.
@@karloshernandezs5631 Humboldt Park! My great-grandpa had an 1880s house next to the Humboldt Park "L". We would go there New Years Day for his birthday party. He died in 1949 but the house is still standing and in good shape as it shows up on the Google Earth street view.

How do you obtain these films? I frequented North Michigan Ave. , Wrigley Bldg. and the Water Tower when I lived there in the 70s and 80s so I appreciated the perspective.
Bring back the neon, and put up screens..... I remember until the 1980's, Halstead and N. Michigan looked just like Times Square.

Chicago was the NYC of the west and had one of the 1st skyscrapers.It was 4 awhile the 2nd largest city in usa.2day it has bout 3million people;had close 2 41/2 @one time but like in all cities the population dropped a little.It is now the 3rd largest in the usa.Los angeles surpassed it bout 15 yrs ago.Heard it has a great nite social life but crime plagues the city currently.
Despite the crime and corruption, maybe because of it, what a truly exciting and incredible place Chicago truly was!
