YES!!! 5u is the way to go . i find the sound better , a hotter signal and just more space to work with .. you get the added plus of being able to " fill a wall "for 1/4 for the cost
Noir is back! He had been busy recovering from seeling his kidneys to get more and bigger modules. Legend has it, he bribed a mad scientist in order to clone them so he can donate more :)))
More and more I've been giving this a lot of thought. I go through phases of what "makes" 5U, MOTM, and Euro different. Sometimes is based on nostalgia, sometimes module selection, and sometime what I want each format to be. I came to 5U from Eurorack. I did it for the physical aesthetics of big text, big dials, heavy cables . . the ergonomics, and the connection to synthesis history. But I still did not buy a keyboard. I was still obsessed with Krell patches, techno, ambient drones - and played the large format in much the same way as Euro. Albeit with 1/8th the module selection. This video, Noir's mere interest in 5u and perhaps my own embrace of large format all are small indicators (perhaps) of the pendulum's swing... *maybe* heralding the rise of 5u popularity for more manufacturers and young artists. Only time will tell, but I for one felt the draw and am very happy I opened the doors to large format.
Hey, that's MY MOTM system at 3:27 lol. Welcome to the fold. I'm curious what this huge dark room / studio is that you are using... based on the acoustics of your voice I'm wondering if you're in a basement?
It sounds crazy and it might be my imagination, but I swear the 5u stuff sounds better than euro with classic additive synthesis. More body or something. Or just bias confirmation.
Also as the guy who coined the term "MU", i must clarify it's literally a unit of measurement, not the name of the format. For example, the Sea Devils Filter is 1MU, the Mankato Filter is 2MU.
It's a lot easier if you have a studio the size of a hangar , a 747 and three articulated trucks to go on tour with a small system, cables the width of a baby's arm and shares in a nuclear power station to power it.
@@DarkSideofSynth I've been around synths a very long time. I never liked Moog format/synths even way back. To me it's like B/W TV. Yes, it exists, with an aspect ratio of 4:3, it was that size because it had to be, but then along came colour widescreen. Why watch B/W TV in this day and age? Most of my Eurorack setup is digital, because it sounds better and is far more interesting sonically.
@@PaulJBurns To each, his own. B/W can be very nice in some cases. Technology surely moves onwards but a) that doesn't mean it is always better nor b) does not mean you cannot enjoy a blast from the past every once in a while
@@PaulJBurns Nostalgia sure is the main reason but not necessarily the old one. I completely agree on the DX7. I had a DX7IID back then. Then again... many did not like and still don't like the DX7 ;) Again. to each, his own.
Idk why but I'm a huge fan of Modcan format, it seems to me like a format between eurorack and 5U, which I'm not sure entirely how accurate that sounds
Last year I decided that rather than get into modular I would instead start building my own synthesizers. Now I am building oscillators, filters, powered mixers, amplifiers and power supplies. Not gonna sell my synths either.
seems you've been out for a while. not sure if you'll see this but figured id try. ive watched both your reviews on the tempest and the nord 3p. i currently own the 3p and its pretty cool but i keep finding myself watching tempest videos every couple months. i just wanted to ask someone whos dealt with both. if i had a tempest instead of the 3p would i be missing out on anything? bascially is there anything the 3p can do that the tempest cant? i know the tempest has some extensive synthesis capabilities plus i feel like that coupled with some of the samples in the digital oscillators could make up for any digitalness the 3p can do. anyways if you see this thanks for answering and i really enjoy your channel but im also glad its not becoming your entire life lol
I prefer large format, for a few reasons: 1. Euroracks have those small ugly knobs, I don't like that. 2. I use the larger tele plugs for many things (guitars, patch bays, synthesizers, and so on), but never use the small kind, so I don't want to buy small ones that I then can only use for the eurorack. 3. The large format doesn't generally feel as cramped as eurorack can feel, sometimes.
I'd really like to move to 5U sometime. Eurorack always feels to have some serious quality issues due to its size (I've got 21U of Eurorack, but for example my Moog Voyager always feels 100x better, due to high quality pots and jacks).
Your appearance in the Hate Loops vid made me realize how much I miss you popping up in my feed. I hope you’re still well and doing what you love. Also the Behringer Crave and P.M. Voltage Lab are both probably a few weeks from market and I want to see what you do with them. Thanks for doing these!
I was literally thinking my one minor minor miiiiinor complaints about any one explaining modular is the content makers assume anyone view their videos knows what they're doing and just as I thought that at 2:53 provided a starting point. I think a lot of people first getting into modular come to RUclips to figure it out. Thank you for provided entertaining and informative content.
Seeing this video title was very exciting. 5U is very intriguing and was the first modular synths I was aware of but I’ve never had a chance to try one out. The Noise Engineering modules in 5U is exciting and something I didn’t know they were doing. How does the scale of the 5U modules feel? Always felt like euro is a bit cramped vertically.
The cool thing about modules is that they keep a good market value compared to other synths. When I started my modular, I just went all In without researching modules (big mistake) then I had to sell some and got some other ones. As of know, I believe that I have a system that does what I need it to do for my music production. This ones look interesting, I will go and check them out. Thanks for the video!
You know me hehe. BTW, the new stuff you showed at Superbooth was the only piece I was remotely interested in...shhh, don’t tell all the other companies lol
I would recommend anyone looking into modulars to consider the 4U format as well. When the prebuilt panels from 73-75.com are released (hopefully this year), you will be able to get a very comprehensive system and a real Serge for about 2000€, inc PSU and boat. And bananas is THE lead for patching :)
I must say that 5U and 5' 1/4" jack connectors and patch cables are way more comfortable than eurorack tinier and tinier modules.... And if you're looking for cheap ones, go the DIY "Kosmo" suggested and used by our dear Simon 'LMNC' Battle!
I bet we would have been in a band in some aspect together if we lived near each other or grew up together I was super into... i guess i still am.. into stabbing westward (guitarist at heart, but getting into eurorack and synth stuff more) and i have always looked for a synth of some kind to be in whatever metalband i was in the past nowadays i play synth in a doom metal band haha
Well you see I’ve grown to not like most all the consumerism of gear over the last few years, so, this is an opportunity to learn about something new, more than about just putting more stuff in my studio. Eurorack isn’t worse, but I really do love the hotter signal I was getting as well as the jack size, it just feels better in use to me. I have fat fingers 🤷🏾♂️
Good ol' MOTM. Y'all may know this already, but when Paul Schreiber first suggested doing a 5U set of modules, a bunch of us took a vote on what to call the line. "Module Of The Month" won out, since the idea was that he'd release module kits on a semi-regular basis. I'm pretty sure STS "retconned" the name to be "Mother Of The Modulars" after a while, because the other name didn't seem as professional as the modules were. And they were VERY nice. Easy to build, great sounding, well worth it. Those huge knobs and patch cables are a delight to work with. I wound up selling my MOTM modules a decade or so ago, and I regret it. (I sold it for the usual reasons - needed the money more than I needed the synth.)
Brother litterally felt like I was listening to some super dope new nails , I'm a huge reznor fan , and you got some influance fer sure , sounds super proper !
I actually never used the DFAM, to tell you the truth tomorrow will be the first time I’ve messed with a new Synth in like 4 months...won’t be the DFAM though, it’s gonna be Modal
So far my experience has shown me that modular minimizes productivity by increasing operator fatigue and discomfort. Let's all go take some piano lessons. ;)
With respect, you came at 5U with some odd preconceptions. 5U isn't more complicated than Eurorack (often quite the opposite), it just fits the hand better. [That said, you then started with four of the weirdest 5U modules available... :) ] Also, forget about "HP." 5U sizing is about "U" -- it's right in the name. Standard 19" rack units (1U=1.75"), used both for height and width.
