  • RADPIO UK reveal their latest 00 gauge model - the Andrew Barclay "Caledonia" 0-4-0 Fireless locomotive!
    Now available to Pre-Order! More information here: rapidotrains.co.uk/caledonia-...
    Recently Rapido were kind enough to invite me down to their UK headquarters to see everything they've been working on and they were kind enough to give me early access to their latest announcement - the Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 Caledonia Fireless Locomotives!
    Used in industrial settings where having a naked flame or sparks would cause an issue, fireless locomotives don't have a lot of the traditional features we usually expect from a steam engine. Instead of a boiler they feature a reservoir filled with high pressure steam and boiling water that gives an operating time of around four hours.
    This latest loco from Rapido UK will come in 10 different liveries, feature the new E24 decoder socket and will also come with a pre-fitted speaker. There won't be any chimney variants or firebox flicker... for obvious reasons!
    Thanks again to Rapido UK for letting me get up close and personal with the initial 3D printed samples and stay tuned for a much longer update featuring more Rapido projects in the near future.
    Thanks for watching 😃

    I’m so happy Rapido is doing things to keep themselves unique. We have other manufacturers squabbling and producing the same models as each other, meanwhile they are off doing their own thing! This looks lovely and hope to one day get one

      Let's not forget that it wasn't so long ago Rapido had their own duplication battle to fight... personally I also think duplication can be a good thing in certain circumstances.
      Speaking to Rapido while I was at their offices though, it was interesting to learn about the way they work which in part allows them to do more niche, quirky models like this that wouldn't be so successful for other manufacturers. Thanks for watching 😃

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy yeah that was because Hornby was trying to break the law, and most of Rapido’s stuff is pretty unique

      Bearing in mind that we don't know the full story (and likely never will) it's probably best for us all to move on - as both Rapido and Hornby have. There's no point letting the hobby become tribal over different manufacturers - it's a waste of time and energy that would be better spent modelling.

    These little industrial locos were ALWAYS popular but only availiable in kit form, just takes a company like Rapido to make them ready to run.

      They've very much been brought to the masses over the last decade or so though. Hornby kickstarted the trend with their Peckett and thanks to the huge success of that it's shown manufacturers that there's a really big market for these types of models. Thanks for watching 😃

      They're pretty special and certainly not the type of steam engines we're used to seeing. Certainly handy for industrial use where flames and sparks needed to be kept to a minimum. Thanks for watching 😃

    Now that fireless loco is definitely on my shopping list maybe 2 . Will give the uncoupling system a try .worst engine to uncouple is Bachman’s Micky mouse tank .😊

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 месяцев назад

      The couplings should be NEM tension locks, same as pretty much every other UK model on the market. But being a NEM socket you can easily switch it out for something else if desired. Thanks for watching 😃

      These certainly throw out the rule book on what we usually expect from a steam loco. I can see a lot of these making their way onto layouts purely because they are so different and quirky! Thanks for watching 😃

    Liliput use to do a fireless in HO but are like hens teeth to find for sale in UK. I know the steel works at BSC Parkgate (makers of plate for Brunel) had a larger one (0-6-0) for their coke gas plant. I would suggest most steelworks with gas plants would have at least one and also some of the explosive manufacturers in South-West Scotland.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 месяцев назад

      From the information I've been provided it seems 114 fireless locos were built so a decent number which implies there was plenty of work for them across the country. Thanks for watching 😃

    Such a cool model! Rapido are really making a hole in my wallet, everytime the make a new announcement it seems like I’m tempted to preorder what they announced, really good marketing on their part I suppose 😂. I’m tempted to get the Caledonian blue one, even though it wouldn’t fit in on my LNER layout.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 месяцев назад +1

      It certainly does seem that way, I know I'm pretty tempted myself by a lot of their upcoming models! If we're all having that reaction though, it suggests they've got a pretty good handle on who their audience is and what they want to see. As for the Caledonian Blue, perhaps it's a works livery that hasn't been repainted yet... or, you know, Rule 1! Thanks for watching 😃

      @modelrailfan37 5 месяцев назад

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy ya rule one does apply for me, I have an E1 on order in improved engine green 🤣. I’m just building my collection as I don’t have that many LNER locos yet, so I want to pick some more up before buying tons that don’t really fit in, the works livery is a great idea though, you might have persuaded me!

    I wish they did the Huntley & Palmer No 2 0-4-0F. The Hornby Huntley & Palmer loco looks nothing like the original fired loco... It looks more like an Andrew Barclay 0-4-0. There is nothing wrong with the Pecketts I have a 0-4-0 and a 0-6-0 it would be nice to get something closer to what Huntley & Palmer used, I'm original from Henley on Thames area and my Mum and Grandmother have both worked for Huntley & Palmer in Reading.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 месяцев назад +1

      The Hornby Huntley & Palmers W4 Peckett is based on a real locomotive though, No.832 I believe. For Rapido, if this initial run is popular enough we could see a second batch in the future so it's not out of the question that they might do that specific loco. Thanks for watching 😃

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy Thank you, they must have serval different locos over the years. I saw this photo at the reading museum with flat sides on the tanker. like the Andrew Barclay.

      If you look at the cab side on that photo you'll notice the letter A whereas the W4 Peckett has D on the cab side. I believe that H&P used letters instead of numbers to distinguish locos during that period so from that we can infer they had at least 4 locos.
      Similarly 5 photos down on this webpage shows the Peckett the Hornby model is based off: www.martynbane.co.uk/peckett/locos.htm
