One of most common problems with 911 even with new models is front wings rusting at bottom near the sill due to stone chips.
Other German manufacturers have rectified this problem by having arch liners that cover this area apart from Mercedes.

    • @GT380man

I recall he’s mentioned that it’s now very rare. These are now classics, as a 2024, the oldest 996.1s are what, 26 years old?
I’ve heard an argument that if they were going to fail on bore scoring, they would have done so by now.
I don’t think we understand why some cars suffered like this and others not. Some say it’s how they were used, revving too high when inadequately warmed up. Others say cornering under hard throttle leading to oil starvation. Yet others swear by fussy oil grade & brand selection & everyone agrees, frequent changes is a sound precaution.
On any vehicle forum I’ve ever been on, oil threads are THE most contentious. I don’t know why. All premium oils of the grade specified by the manufacturer are going to be fine. The exception is if you’ve a wet clutch, like most motorcycles. Some additives definitely promote clutch slip. I mostly fettle 45 year old Suzukis. They were designed for 1970s oil technology. I wouldn’t pick “better” modern oils for that reason.
Luke is canny and I’m guessing that if he suspects bore scoring, he would decline to buy in the vehicle.
This car has had an engine rebuild. I know almost nothing about 911s, but I believe bore scoring, if bad enough to result in smoking, can only be fixed with a rebuild. I don’t know of any other reason beyond catastrophic mechanical failure that would lead to a rebuild. And most people say 911 motors are nearly bulletproof beyond a couple of well known weak points. So I’m guessing it’s died of bore scoring. What does Luke say?
I note that a sump pick up modification ex factory features in some 996 motors, like the X51 Power Pack engine. Presumably Porsche had reasoned that this reduces risk of bore scoring?
It’s a very good question you ask. I didn’t intend my post to be deflection in any way.

I'm a little confused. I thought you said the car the original owner wanted to purchase back you had already sold. Did that happen with two different cars?
I can't believe that place screwed up the split rims and mixed up the centers.
I love watching these videos because I love the 911s.
MOT is pretty thorough. I love that shaker machine. Is that to make sure the mirrors don't fall off? Lol. Probably for the suspension bushings and stuff.
We don't get any kind of inspections like that over here in the U.S., just annual smog check.

    • @friendsgreenporsche5234
      @friendsgreenporsche5234  3 года назад +1

Hi Werner Danler. The person you see in the video purchasing the Zenith Blue 996 owned the car previously a number of years ago. I wasn't aware that there isn't a mandatory like-wise test in the U.S!

@@friendsgreenporsche5234 I took my Peugeot to Kansas back in 93 and they said they were going to do an inspection when I had to register it there.
So the guy comes out and checked the car number and the engine number to make sure it was original. That was it!
Here in Nevada they just do annual smog checks. That's all any states do as far as I know. I know that if you just run out of gas on the autobahn you are in deep doo-doo.
      Cars here are pretty unsafe.
