Casta Diva - Claudia Muzio

- A moving Rendition by one of the Great Sopranos of the last Century. Muzio was known for her interpretaions and her ability to produce great pathos in her singing. This recording was made by Columbia late in her career during declining health 1935
The tenor Giacomo Lauri-Volpi wrote of Muzio: "Singing with that unique voice of hers made of tears and sighs and restrained interior fire. The years, around 1930, were probably her best, precisely the years in which she did not record! Between 1924 and 1934 there is a ten-year gap. The missing period would seem to be the very one in which her interpretations had matured while her voice was still in prime condition. The early records may lack the intensity and creativeness of her later recordings, and in the famous Columbias one is aware of some physical limitations (uneasy high notes, flatness, mannerisms in style and enunciation, vowels!), but there is a pathos, an inner committment and charm in her singing that is immensely moving and touching. Only a few sopranos equalled her in this aspect of emotional involvement."
I have my Mother's Grand Piano which is over a hundred years old and it is autographed by Claudia Muzio.
It s a great value surely!! what a luck
Lucky you!!
She and Callas... no words can describe these talents and what the effect they have on people souls when they sing.
Beside, how I adore Muzio's vibrato! It always softens my heart.
"Casta diva" is a prayer Muzio knew this instinctively, listen to the chorus. The only other soprano to figure this out was Callas. Muzio's voice, I have no idea, from where this Angel and her voice comes.
I agree entirely. Callas' and Poselle's Norma sounds a goddess or at least high priestess - dramatic and awe inspiring. here, la divina Claudia is a woman or a mother in great sorrow and agony. As Mafaldo Favero and other divas pointed out, the uncomparable quality of Muzio's artistry is to make the audience to suffer with the heroine.
Beautiful and moving. My second favorite to my Maria.
Such gorgeous tone and expressiveness - hard to compare with anyone today - Claudia the Incomparable!
I concur with Jeff Oliva. There were Callas & Muzio. No other Sopranos can move me
like these two. Their greatness in this way is what opera singing can be but seldom is.
Perhaps you should listen to Rosa Ponselle. The greatest of them all
I just listened to the "cleaned up" 1929 Ponselle recording and agree that it's very beautifully sung. Neither diva makes any mistakes, so finally it's just a matter of personal taste imo. I'm a sucker for Muzio. If you haven't heard her sing O del mio amato ben, search for the RUclips. Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for the tip, it is really one of the best she ever recorded.
Wonderful singing even with the limitations of ill health. She was very great indeed. Her Addio from Traviata moves me to tears.
I have been listening to many Casta Divas. They all feature big name sopranos, who give it their personal stamp. Muzio's voice, has always been a favorite of mine, and she doesn't disappoint here. Perhaps, there is a little less drama in the words, but it is made up for in the overall wall of even sound that she produces, with her liquid legato. I love it!
Muzio,Ponselle,Callas etc.Who cares-they were all 3 fantastic and a delight to listen to.Brava divas.
La Divina
Lei è la DIVINA!!!!!!!
Technically, this is not flawless. My mind tells me this. Something else (my heart, my soul?) also tells me that the only proper response to such a performance is to thank God for making this miracle possible.
this is no mortal woman, tis Euterpe reborn
That "barrel" quality! It's called an open throat and using complete appogio, almost overly relaxed cheeks, causing that extra resonance. But even this Casta Diva has its technical vocal flaws, like notes being shaken out, the larynx being shaken to hit notes. So what?! I love Muzio. I love Callas! Muzio had a pure tone and was lyric. Callas was spinto, could do Dramatic and coloraturra as a assoluta agille' soprano. Both communicated greatly and are my favorite two female singers.
Mafaldo Favero's word about Muzio's Norma: " Her Norma was an unforgettable creation. She had the quality I consider essential in an artist: to make the public suffer along with her... Callas was a phenomenon, but she had no feminity and she never produced chills down my spine". I didn't want to give rise to any debates whether Muzio or Callas was the greatest (I prefer Callas here :P). Yet, it could be wonderful to listen to how Muzio would execute "In mia man" with her voix des larmes.
The score for this aria is marked "dolce espressivo e pianissimo sempre"...it isn't supposed to be sung with great fullness of voice. You criticizing Muzio is like G. Bush criticizing G. Washington!
Beautiful, silken legato, elegant style and deep, inward feeling. If only she had recorded more from Norma...
Viva Muzio!
Full opening middle voice, the way it should be, easy unstrained high notes although with pause in the vocalization parts and not the most difficult comma that we hear from Callas and Sutherland, beautiful agility in the coloratura, harsh and very fast portamento at the end
Sometimes I feel exhausted by every self appointed expert but I do understand this is a forum for discussion. Muzio is doing excellently and like Ponselle must have been important to the development of singers like Callas and Sutherland. I find this rendition
beautiful and haunting, ornamental figures, chromatic scales, or not...
The great mezzosoprano Ebe Stignani was Adalgisa to Muzio’s Norma and considered Muzio the greatest Norma with whom she ever sang.
No other Soprano in this Rep besides Callas moves me so. AH, NON CREDEA for another example. Too bad she didn't record right when the electrical process was initiated but nevertheless, even the year before she died, her performances are still
treasurable.. Forget the EDISON'S (1920-25)! Scratchy? A millenial understatement!
Semplicemente divino!
Muzio is a wonderful voice that I have loved for over 40 years her later recordings are in my option are the best
L'avevo ascoltata 40 anni fa e me ne ero innamorata!
Wonderful recording! Muzio is just sublime!
Great!!!
Did MUZIO ever sing NORMA on stage? Still her CASTA DIVA is a classic performance. On one of my old LPs this has her rendition included & is right up by the Callas recording(s). Although her electrical recordings were not made, as far as I know, prior to those she made the year before she died they still, if compromised by her health issues, are testimony to her greatness as a singer. O DEL MIO AMATO BEN, classic Muzio.
She DID sing Norma on stage!
At the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, she sang it 3 times: 1927, 1928 and 1933.
And also in other countries
listen to an old singer celestina boninsegna (dramatica soprano) sing this, and the great french soprano ninon vallin(lyric, but so beautiful).
your comments about Muzio are exceptionally perceptive and intelligent imho reduxmisc. Thank you. I love her. Only today I was listening to a recording of the Act I Otello duet she did with Merli. I so agree with you about the "pathos and inner commitment."
Callas or Muzio? Who is better? When I listen to Callas the answer is Callas. When to Muzio ... Muzio.
Honestly, that is not Muzio’s best. Her terrible expression is shockingly bad for someone who has 1/4th of the training true opera needs. I feel sad for those who like bad performances like Muzio.
@marioegorga AGREED ! that pathos wow it gets deep and deeper!
@beachblonde181 She was 46 in 1935, when this was recorded. Her breathing technique and voice production may be perfect. Her coloratura technique is not.
Muzio is simply wonderful. AShe is a Norma in the tradition of Rosa Ponselle - solid, sensual, dramatic and eminently musical. What a winning combination. Oh yes, Cerquetti is also in this category.
Maravillosa voz, dulce y sobria.
I stumbled upon this one by accident as I was comparing renditions of Casta Diva. Thank you. It is just marvelous....mellow, rich...as compelling in many ways as that of Callas without the slight hysteria in Callas's voice at times.
Superb. Thank you.
If one would need an intro to Muzio O DEL.MIO AMATO BEN would be a first example in my view. All her art is there without her poor health compromising & affecting some of her late recordings. Still, I find much of her from her best years even in 1935. I remain a Muzio partisan & proud of it! Although it is unfortunate that there seem to be no recordings of her from the very beginning of the electrical era when her vocal health & continuing artistic maturity were probably in perfect balance. But still, IMO, there is much to appreciate in some of her late recordings & I cherish the considerable beauty of her instrument & even with her health issues, I feel their evaluation somewhat underrated. A fine example, IMO, are the two scenes Muzio recorded from OTELLO with Merli (one of the 2 or 3 best OTELLOs during this time) where I find her in fine interpretive form & sounding still in admirable vocal shape considering her indisposition. As mentioned above her 1935 version of O DEL MIO AMATO BEN (in a moderate range) is the most memorable in my experience.
I am 60 yrs old and have love Muzio for almost all most of my life
I personally think her later /electrical recordings are superior to her earlier acoustic recordings
She will always my favorite female singer
@reduxmisc lovely
eveyone associates this so much with Callas but Claudia is wonderful
@reduxmisc
This is just wonderful, her belcanto technique is perfect, more perfect than Callas and she has the same pathos. I love this aria. Thank you for posting.
If someone can equal Maria in Casta Diva it is Claudia, great choir, orchestra and conductor as well!
Almost sounds like Serafin, but maybe to early to be him?
I would also say that Ponselle could be put in the same category as Muzio and Callas.
@@artdanks ,absolutely,Ponselle was great, maybe the greatest?
Even though in the most difficult part she didn't get closer to the most wonderful interpretation made by Callas ( 3:24 ), this interpretation is a jewel, her voice is really beautiful, wondrous.
Thank you for sharing
Marvillosa interpretación.!!
@reduxmisc I am shocked! it really does have a Callas feeling ! WOW
Music of the gods. Even better than Maria Callas on this-the signature song of Callas. This is the voice of a goddess.TY
the year was 1935.... I've just put additional notes in the more info section.
EXCELENTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Såå mycket själ och dramatik i rösten. Oerhört gripande
Very nice! This is the first time I've heard her Casta Diva. Who produced the record you're playing? Nice photos. FIVE STARS!
Claudia Muzio has a beautiful voice and she's one of my favorite sopranos of all time, but Norma must be powerful and not only beautiful. Maria Callas, Gina Cigna and Rosa Ponselle are the greatest Norma until now!!!!
A Class act in any Era
awesome! As good as any that ever recorded.
oh i love cigna and ponselle too!
Divine like your blessed soul.
Nina
I have about 100,000 classical and opera vocal recordings. Claudia Muzio is my favorite singer. That should say it all.
I know she was great. Overcome Callas and Ponselle in hinstrionic habilities, but each one of them had her best aria or song. In my opinion, this version is great, but I prefer Ponselles'casta diva
jfsanin
No es de este mundo
Sixtyfive years old and still infantile. Instead of your insipid comments on the singers why don´t you come with some suggestions of reallly great sopranos at the Colon! I am sure they were not argentinians.
The audience of the Colon is world famous for it´s warmth, enthusiasm and knowledge. You obviously are the exception. Your are making a complete prat of yourself.Find another forum for your vitriolic and incompotent remarks.
❤mon idole de jeunesse ❤
Beautiful
For everyone's information, mannai888 have an enormous regard for human beings. After all, art only exist because of the existence of human beings. It just so happens that non-human should go non-human ways and not tread the world of human beings, let alone the art world of human beings. And dialogue can only be made among human beings and definitely not between human beings and some lowly living organism.
I must accept the fact that finally someone equalled the immortal Callas in this aria.
The 3 great Normas...Callas, Ponselle, and Muzio.
@@artdanks sure
@@artdanks I could also add Cigna
Over the years there have been a few singers that have received the accolade of "La Divina" Muzio got hers in 1919. It is an accolade that signifies an extraordinary talent. Callas being one of them. Unfortunately today it is an accolade that is thrown around quite commonly and not always deservedly
Exquisite! FIVE STARS....
Celestina Boninsegna, "Casta diva...Ah! Bello a me ritorna", Bellini: Norma (rec. 1910)
@Robertgrade -At least as good as any of them and a better singer by far than Sutherland or Callas. Even Callas agrees that Ponselle was her (Callas) superior. They both learned much from Claudio Muzio.
The beauty of Norma comes from the drama, not from the desire to sing beautifully.
wow..I have never heared of this woman before tonight, she has got to be a great of all time, just remember the recording is totally rubish . Yet the tone and power are amazing. thanks

Salve Claudia.
HERMOSO.
no,Madame...i'm an humble dilettante from Argentina...only this...

Maravillosa !
@reduxmisc wow, I really enjoy this aria, good job and thanks for posting. from mexico
Bellisimo !!
Beautifully executed, but in my opinion cannot match Cigna's version.
