Quiet doesn't use sign language because she wasn't sure till the end of the game is she wanted to kill everyone or not basically. The run down is she was sent to kill Snake, but was defeated and extracted, so her back up plan was to use the parasites to kill him (and herself) but she wasn't sure if she wanted to do that since Snake shows mercy to her and she ends up falling in love with him. It isn't till the end of the game she finally admits that to herself when Snake goes out of his way to rescue her. Also someone pointed out she can speak Navajo but doesn't exactly get to interact with the only other person on the base that can speak it since she's locked up 24/7.
rrtt1 Pretty much. Since we're dropping spoilers now Navajo is the only language the bio weapon will not be activated with, so if she speaks any other language she will turn into a bioweapon and kill everyone. So she does not talk since she does not want to kill everyone.

The real issue isn't the fact that she can survive with taking energy through her skin. The real issue is the fact that she can sustain her powers that way. This is the list of amazing powers Quiet has: 1) She can dissipate into a puff of black smoke and teleport short distances. 2) She can turn invisible. Which by the way deflects sunlight in order to work, which would invalidate her power. 3) She can run at insane speeds. Faster than a car at the very least. 4) She can jump the height of a small building. 5) She has advanced reaction timing and depth perception. She is seen shooting the pilot of a fighter jet through the cockpit in mid flight. And she is seen firing bullets through spinning helicopter blades. She basically has bullet time eyesight. There is no way in hell these Parasites follow the Laws of Physics in any meaningful way. Water and sunlight simply cannot power these abilities. It'd have been better if they called it magic, at least it'd make some degree of sense.

And both of these characters fought in World War 2, and whatever tech they used were supposedly around in the 1960s. :P

What I've always thought was funny is all of the chat about Quiet. Let's ignore the "language recognizing parasite" that's introduced in this game, nuclear toting giant robots, a fuel-less robotic arm in 1984, a military base in the middle of the ocean that no one knows about, an absolute removal of physics when it comes to the martial arts sequences, and such accurate plastic surgery to conceal the identity of the "pawn" (in 1984 mind you with 1984 technology) that everyone, even his closest friends don't realize it's not really him. Let us also ignore from previous installments of flying people, psychics, ghosts that can psychologically affect you, mind control, nanobots that can control entire people/nations, ninja cyborgs, a vampire that can also suck cyborg fluids, skullface, the parasitic skull army, that weird firey bastard that has the psychic ghost/teleporting child thing in a straight jacket that can soak bullet and rechannel their energy whose entire existence is impossible and NEVER explained, a girl with a bomb the size of her torso IN her torso being smuggled and no one noticing it let alone it not killing her by existing in her body, the act of cloning throughout the series, single man being able to take out entire armies, etc. etc. etc. It's fiction. Why the obsession (over 30 videos on youtube btw) of "debunking" only Quiet is weird. There's literally millions of other aspects to Metal Gear that make absolutely no sense and is scientifically impossible. But, like noted, naked women get views. Here we are 2 years later and this video has 1.1mil views. I'm sure if Shoddy had done a video about how Psychomantis can't actually be telekinetic or psychopathic, it'd get 100 views and wouldn't pay the bills. I'd say the second best reason is "Because it's the first game in the Metal Gear timeline, making it a good introduction to the series", something that wouldn't discourage him from jumping right into the middle of it instead of starting from pixelated scratch.
To be fair, you blatantly ignored that the functions you pulled out for Quiet are not performed by HER, per se, but by a symbiotic organism that replaced her skin and lungs. While the total energy requirements ARE bullshit, everything else IS plausible depending on what magical process the organism in question uses. In theory, all she would need would be a plausible is to be able to absorb 8.3 MJ (or 2000 kcal) of energy from sunlight and a few trace minerals from her environment. The bullshit comes out to be the energy requirement. The sun provides an illuminance of ~1.3 kW / m2. Let's make out math easy and assume her exposed skin has a total surface area of .65m2 that gives her a maximum energy input of 500W from sunlight at 100% efficiency. Assuming she spends 8 hours per day sunbathing she would be able to absorb 500W *60 sec * 60 min * 8 hr or ~14.4 MJ. However, the best solar panels on the planet operate at only ~20% efficiency and plants average ~24%. That means that she would need to be at least three times more efficient than a green plant at absorbing incoming radiation from the sun.
Quiets lungs are burnt to ash. Her insides are all kinds of messed up due to stuf that happens in the story before you recruit her. She didn't get these abilities until after that happened. Before she was just another soldier, but after she got all those abilities, some of which are the photosynthesis. Now we all know its all bs anyway and an excuse to justify a character design. Personally I'm fine with that, but this video only looks at that one claim when in order to deal with that claim you should also look at the other things that she went through to get there. Though that would be telling some spoilers for Quiets story, but it could be done in a way to not give away the overall story spoilers. at least not more than Austin already hinted at here.

@Deez Nutz The NES port definitely is not good. The two MSX games, however are very well-made (at least for the time) and were successful in Japan. Hell, they packaged both of theme with both Subsistence and HD editions of MGS3, give them a spin.
As a woman I have no bloody problem with Quiet because I just like her character and her visuals. The idea is just amazing. I loved the saints from Hitman for the same reason. They were cool as shit. I don't feel triggered or attacked because I have my own confidence. And if man can't keep his ding dong calm it is his own problem. I suggest self control. But that of course has to be supported by the fact of you being an adult.

well to be fair, the End moves around alot less than Quiet, thus would require less energy. He is basicly pushed around in a wheelshair (saving his remaining energy stored), and only moves short distances on his own when he has to, otherwise being completely still.

My understanding was that the parasites that replaced her skin needed to photosynthesise to keep her, and themselves, alive, but the reason she wore minimal clothes, I assumed, was to make use of the chromatophores on those parasites to become invisible... I did not think about this long.
Sometimes I think that writers forget that the easiest solution usually makes the most sense. If they wanted a nekid gril, they should of just had the character hate clothes.And if you want a twist make it so that quiet was a regular human the whole time but went out of her way to come up with an excuse to not wear clothes.

He was also over 100 years old, so... Ignoring that, he was photosynthetic, and her abilities were augmented by the parasites, so they're two entirely different beasts.
I'd just like to point out, however, that Quiet's power come for The End. Code talker studied the remains of The End and found the Parasites that gave him his supposed abilities. Dead Or Alive Modelling Agency The in-game cutscene camera says othetwise. It so clearly focuses on Quiet's clevage and ass at times for no reason other than sex appeal. One could make the argument we're seeing fron Snake's viewpoint, but A: It rarely does this, so doing it now it very obviously suspisious, and B: Just because she's a badass doesn't mean it's still not exploitation. The designers used her body to exploit the male gaze to make people like the game more so it would sell more. They very clearly made her a sex-symbol (just because she's badass doesn't mean she isn't also a sex symbol). The best proof of this is the only time we see a topless or half-naked man in the game in an even remotely sexy light would be if you equip your character and your guards in swimsuits. This is an optional thing that's relatively hidden and not in-your-face about it. Quiet, however, is ALWAYS in sexy attire, the cutsenes focus on her body, and the only time you can actually cover her up is if you unlock one of her cosmetic costumes (of which only one doesn't have her boobs exposed and jiggle physics active) and it costs credits to start a mission wearing that, meaning that you have to pay in-game currency to make her decent. It's exploitation. There is no sexified, half-naked male that the camera focuses on in a sexy way, and the only decent clothing she has is unlocked after you've built up her relationship meter, and it's one of the later unlocks at that. Just because she's a badass doesn't mean it's not exploitation. Fine, "Pandering" is a more accurate term here. Look.... I think you're trying to make the argument that Quiet dresses like that because she doesn't care and/or is confident enough to deal with the inevitable gazes she gets from the men on Motherbase and Snake. That she dresses that way because she chooses to. But the thing is... She breathes and drinks through her skin. It says so right in game; she cannot wear normal clothes; she needs to be as naked as possible at all times in order to live. And who, prey tell, wrote this restriction into her character? The writers. The game developers. They literally forced her character to wear skimpy outfits. Like, she doesn't chose to wear skimpy outfits; she NEEDS to. ...So, what motivations did the writers have to do this? She's forced to dress slutty. It's irrelevant if she wants to or not; she's required to in order to survive. So it's not like she's choosing to dress this way. ...Think about the reasoning behind _why_ the writers did that. And then consider that there is very clearly jiggle physics implemented, and consider how there are cutscenes which focus entirely on her breasts and butt. ...Pandering. Plain and simple.

It's something critics can target, and with good reason. ...Regardless, it seems as though the initial argument of if this is exploitation has been resolved; while our definitions of the word may vary, we seem to both agree her outfit is designed with the sole intention of sex-appeal. Going to my original comment... as I said, it's not like the designers were being subtle about this exploitation and pandering. If they are going to do it, at the very least they could have gone all-the-way and made a joke out of it. Hence the joke name, "D-Cup".

Its fine to not want to go back and play the other games, but because they are all a part of an interconnected story, you have no justification in saying the plot makes no sense and is overblown. Its like opening a book and reading two chapters from the middle - not a lot is going to make sense. There is also an awful lot of information about the parasites in the game and in quiet that you seem to just not know - if you want to fairly call it nonsensical, you'd have to account for all the information the game actually gives, which you evidently didn't, because the game does clearly state that its not Quiet herself performing photosynthesis and etc, its the parasites and symbiosis they have, which makes all this infinitely more plausible at the least, and you have no way of disproving as there isn't a real world equivalent of the parasites to compare the ones in game to. This isn't supposed to be a justification for Quiet's attire saying that there's no way kojima had her the way she was for sex appeal, this is just the proper clarification of game lore and story you ignored. And if they are going to put in some shameless sex appeal, isn't it also fine to simultaneously be justified in the plot too? Not just upheld by some weak reason either, but a key point that the entire story of the game hinges on.
Quiet does have a sex appeal element, but she isnt just sex appeal, I liked het story quite a big in fact, and I hope she returns if they every decide to do justice to Venom's story.

Video game logic is why we look the other way when bullets are only effective in cut-scenes or when your character can eat a ham to regain health. Video game logic does not extend to the stupidest, most ill thought out justification for having titillation in a video game, ever. The concept makes no sense, no effort is put in to have it make any sense, and worst of all, there was no need for that BS. Kojima just decided that stupid was better than admitting he designed Quiet the sex appeal to be sex appeal.
I'm not going to say you /have/ to play every game in the 30 years of Metal Gear canon to truly appreciate the series. But you, personally, Austin, I get the feeling that once you pick apart Overwatch's science down to its last thread, Metal Gear could be a new stomping ground for you. Bipedal machines, Artificial intelligences, Nanomachines, cloning, FoxDIE, Sneaking Suits, Stealth Camo, the Codec, accelerated aging, cyborg ninjas, how much control the Patriots have, and so many more uncountable leaps of science fiction for you to analyze and tear apart. Lenny Face Using food is a terrible analogy. See, the problem here is the fact that the graphics are simply outdated (at least in the case of the first two "Solid" games). They're PS1 graphics, back when 3D models were basically brand new for video games- you can take literally any N64/PS1 game and compare it to any game made past 2008 and people would obviously say that the newer one looks better. It seems like a stupid reason to completely dismiss a game, though. So what, the game looks like crap and that puts you off completely? Whoopdie freakin doo, I guess you'll never be able to properly try classics and games that have been hailed as revolutionary just because you can't handle it when the game doesn't practically look like real life. I guess my point is, graphics shouldn't be a primary factor in judging a game and they definitely shouldn't be the only thing you consider when looking at a game. Games were originally made to play and graphics and story weren't that much of a concern until some point near the end of the SNES/Genesis era. Well, graphics were always an added bonus, but it's not like people went to go buy a megaman game because it looked cool even if they hated megaman's gameplay.

The video doesn't even discuss the topic of skin. It's all about energy and nutrition, both of which Quiet's human inside still depends on. Besides, photosynthesis, being the plant version of breathing, doesn't provide energy on its own. And even if it did, it would still take an inordinate amount of solar efficiency to pull it off. You need to find a much more efficient way of intaking it, and the way almost every organism on the plant has evolved to do this is to eat.
I guess the simple version of what I said can be boiled down to "It's not possible to talk about scientific possibilities of something you don't know the properties of." such as colonies of 'alien' parasites that form or perhaps replace organs of other organisms in such a way as is described, while the game never really goes into specifics.

Hide inside the buildings to hide from enemy fire. Have you also tried using the chicken hat? The mission probably only took me like, 30 to 45+ minutes.

Did you know quiet is linked to the beginning of the game when bandage man lights her on fire due to a certain interrogation scene where they find rubbing oil (what quiet was burned with) a plant she knocked over which was found in her body and her lungs were destroyed with burns. Cipher gave her abilities to disappear, move at super sonic speeds, and to breathe though her skin. She also doesn't eat. Ever. She can't speak (or doesn't want to) because Skull Face released a vocal cord parasite that will be triggered by a certain language and start breeding in the lungs.

Quiet doesn't use sign language because she wasn't sure till the end of the game is she wanted to kill everyone or not basically. The run down is she was sent to kill Snake, but was defeated and extracted, so her back up plan was to use the parasites to kill him (and herself) but she wasn't sure if she wanted to do that since Snake shows mercy to her and she ends up falling in love with him. It isn't till the end of the game she finally admits that to herself when Snake goes out of his way to rescue her. Also someone pointed out she can speak Navajo but doesn't exactly get to interact with the only other person on the base that can speak it since she's locked up 24/7.

The real issue isn't the fact that she can survive with taking energy through her skin. The real issue is the fact that she can sustain her powers that way. This is the list of amazing powers Quiet has:
1) She can dissipate into a puff of black smoke and teleport short distances.
2) She can turn invisible. Which by the way deflects sunlight in order to work, which would invalidate her power.
3) She can run at insane speeds. Faster than a car at the very least.
4) She can jump the height of a small building.
5) She has advanced reaction timing and depth perception. She is seen shooting the pilot of a fighter jet through the cockpit in mid flight. And she is seen firing bullets through spinning helicopter blades. She basically has bullet time eyesight.
There is no way in hell these Parasites follow the Laws of Physics in any meaningful way. Water and sunlight simply cannot power these abilities. It'd have been better if they called it magic, at least it'd make some degree of sense.

What I've always thought was funny is all of the chat about Quiet. I'd say the second best reason is "Because it's the first game in the Metal Gear timeline, making it a good introduction to the series", something that wouldn't discourage him from jumping right into the middle of it instead of starting from pixelated scratch.
To be fair, you blatantly ignored that the functions you pulled out for Quiet are not performed by HER, per se, but by a symbiotic organism that replaced her skin and lungs. While the total energy requirements ARE bullshit, everything else IS plausible depending on what magical process the organism in question uses. In theory, all she would need would be a plausible is to be able to absorb 8.3 MJ (or 2000 kcal) of energy from sunlight and a few trace minerals from her environment. The bullshit comes out to be the energy requirement.
The sun provides an illuminance of ~1.3 kW / m2. Let's make out math easy and assume her exposed skin has a total surface area of .65m2 that gives her a maximum energy input of 500W from sunlight at 100% efficiency. Assuming she spends 8 hours per day sunbathing she would be able to absorb 500W *60 sec * 60 min * 8 hr or ~14.4 MJ. However, the best solar panels on the planet operate at only ~20% efficiency and plants average ~24%. That means that she would need to be at least three times more efficient than a green plant at absorbing incoming radiation from the sun.

Quiets lungs are burnt to ash. Her insides are all kinds of messed up due to stuf that happens in the story before you recruit her. She didn't get these abilities until after that happened. Before she was just another soldier, but after she got all those abilities, some of which are the photosynthesis.
Now we all know its all bs anyway and an excuse to justify a character design. Personally I'm fine with that, but this video only looks at that one claim when in order to deal with that claim you should also look at the other things that she went through to get there.
Though that would be telling some spoilers for Quiets story, but it could be done in a way to not give away the overall story spoilers. at least not more than Austin already hinted at here.

As a woman I have no bloody problem with Quiet because I just like her character and her visuals. The idea is just amazing. I loved the saints from Hitman for the same reason. They were cool as shit. One could make the argument we're seeing fron Snake's viewpoint, but A: It rarely does this, so doing it now it very obviously suspisious, and B: Just because she's a badass doesn't mean it's still not exploitation. The designers used her body to exploit the male gaze to make people like the game more so it would sell more. They very clearly made her a sex-symbol (just because she's badass doesn't mean she isn't also a sex symbol). The best proof of this is the only time we see a topless or half-naked man in the game in an even remotely sexy light would be if you equip your character and your guards in swimsuits. This is an optional thing that's relatively hidden and not in-your-face about it. Quiet, however, is ALWAYS in sexy attire, the cutsenes focus on her body, and the only time you can actually cover her up is if you unlock one of her cosmetic costumes (of which only one doesn't have her boobs exposed and jiggle physics active) and it costs credits to start a mission wearing that, meaning that you have to pay in-game currency to make her decent.
It's exploitation. There is no sexified, half-naked male that the camera focuses on in a sexy way, and the only decent clothing she has is unlocked after you've built up her relationship meter, and it's one of the later unlocks at that.
Just because she's a badass doesn't mean it's not exploitation.

...So, what motivations did the writers have to do this?

Even without the whole "photosynthesis" thing, how well would breathing and drinking through your skin interact? The breathing through the skin would be hard enough without having to deal double duty with drinking.
Its fine to not want to go back and play the other games, but because they are all a part of an interconnected story, you have no justification in saying the plot makes no sense and is overblown. Its like opening a book and reading two chapters from the middle - not a lot is going to make sense. There is also an awful lot of information about the parasites in the game and in quiet that you seem to just not know - if you want to fairly call it nonsensical, you'd have to account for all the information the game actually gives, which you evidently didn't, because the game does clearly state that its not Quiet herself performing photosynthesis and etc, its the parasites and symbiosis they have, which makes all this infinitely more plausible at the least, and you have no way of disproving as there isn't a real world equivalent of the parasites to compare the ones in game to. This isn't supposed to be a justification for Quiet's attire saying that there's no way kojima had her the way she was for sex appeal, this is just the proper clarification of game lore and story you ignored. And if they are going to put in some shameless sex appeal, isn't it also fine to simultaneously be justified in the plot too? Not just upheld by some weak reason either, but a key point that the entire story of the game hinges on.

Video game logic does not extend to the stupidest, most ill thought out justification for having titillation in a video game, ever. Lenny Face Using food is a terrible analogy. See, the problem here is the fact that the graphics are simply outdated (at least in the case of the first two "Solid" games). They're PS1 graphics, back when 3D models were basically brand new for video games- you can take literally any N64/PS1 game and compare it to any game made past 2008 and people would obviously say that the newer one looks better. It seems like a stupid reason to completely dismiss a game, though. So what, the game looks like crap and that puts you off completely? Whoopdie freakin doo, I guess you'll never be able to properly try classics and games that have been hailed as revolutionary just because you can't handle it when the game doesn't practically look like real life.
I guess my point is, graphics shouldn't be a primary factor in judging a game and they definitely shouldn't be the only thing you consider when looking at a game. While I don't want to be "that guy"...Did you not get to the part of the game that tells you about how her skin and lungs are in fact not her at all, but a basically a colony of symbiotic organisms? The video doesn't even discuss the topic of skin. It's all about energy and nutrition, both of which Quiet's human inside still depends on.
Besides, photosynthesis, being the plant version of breathing, doesn't provide energy on its own. And even if it did, it would still take an inordinate amount of solar efficiency to pull it off. For reference, a single square foot of typical solar panel has roughly the solar-to-watt efficiency of 14%, which means it produces about 10 watts. It takes ~2300 watt/hours to equal a 2000 Calorie diet, which means you'd need 230 square feet of solar panel to equal a human diet in energy.
Fourteen percent, incidentally, is around the average efficiency rate of a plant.
Beyond even _that_, there's the sheer amount of mass that needs to be absorbed. You think all that brown stuff that you crap out every day is just food? No. Like urine, feces is the waste products of the entire body. Old cells that don't work anymore make up a huge part of feces, just like old water that cells can't use anymore make up a huge part of urine.
Your body needs physical nutrients to make new cells or your body would slowly crumble from the inside (ie, starve).
And, as explained in the video, you simply can't gain that kind of mass from the air. You need to find a much more efficient way of intaking it, and the way almost every organism on the plant has evolved to do this is to eat.
I guess the simple version of what I said can be boiled down to "It's not possible to talk about scientific possibilities of something you don't know the properties of." such as colonies of 'alien' parasites that form or perhaps replace organs of other organisms in such a way as is described, while the game never really goes into specifics.

It took me 35-40 hours before I finished Mission 10, and I really don't know how that happened. I mean, I know I'm not good at the game, but everyone I talk to gets really surprised when I tell them this. Am I missing something?
Kyra Grymm Well it depends what equipment you have. I wore battle armour and used a grenade launcher, bandana, missle launcher, etc. I you haven't already develop stronger weapons and armour. Hide inside the buildings to hide from enemy fire.
Have you also tried using the chicken hat? The mission probably only took me like, 30 to 45+ minutes.

She went under parasite therapy after being burned from rubbing alcohol at the hospital. the parasites gave her superhuman abilities like speed, perception, durability, longevity, phasing, invisibility and healing factors, so since she was badly burnt, the parasite restored her physical appearance but her internal organs are basically dead. She survives though photosynthesis, breathing through the skin, eliminating the needs for food, drinking or breathing through her lungs.
That's basically her powers.

Quiet is a fappable female character for horny young players added to lighten the mood of the less heavy mood Metal Gear made so far. Even Ground Zeroes that is shit has a heavier mood. Did you know quiet is linked to the beginning of the game when bandage man lights her on fire due to a certain interrogation scene where they find rubbing oil (what quiet was burned with) a plant she knocked over which was found in her body and her lungs were destroyed with burns. Cipher gave her abilities to disappear, move at super sonic speeds, and to breathe though her skin. She also doesn't eat. Ever. She can't speak (or doesn't want to) because Skull Face released a vocal cord parasite that will be triggered by a certain language and start breeding in the lungs.
