This is a first class film of it's era. I agree with Anna, Cat, and Irene. It deserves to be watched. Considering it was made in 1932 I was completely surprised at how good the special effects, visuals and art work are. Excellent editing by Mr. Shuster to tie them seamlessly together. Cinematography by Mr. JW Howe is flawless. William Cameron Menzies studied at Yale and the University of Edinburgh and went on to create some great work. Mr. Menzie directed the burning of Atlanta sequence in "Gone with the Wind" as well as the Salvador Dalí dream sequence of Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945). (As a side note, you should see Dali's masterpiece painting "Santiago El Grande" at the Beaverbrooke Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. I've seen it on three separate visits to that Province. It's amazing.) Oddly enough, in my view, one of Mr. Menzie's best pictures is the little-known sci-fi flick, "Invaders from Mars" 1953, which has an haunting nightmarish atmosphere all of it's own.
I lived unscaled from Mars growing up watched it everything it came in and was so excited about it. I'm watching this now wondering if a certain old "satanist" if the time, as THEY call him, didn't have a bit of something to do with this anda few other flicks back then.
Amazing to be a movie from 1932! Love old movies, theres something charming in old films where you can appreciate the effort of doing special effects when the technology wasnt advanced
Incredible camera work and lighting by James Wong Howe. Amazing art direction by James Cameron Menzies. The opening sequence of this he went on to duplicate in his direction of 1939's Thief of Baghdad for Korda. The Bela Lugosi character being similar to Conrad Veidt. You can see the beginnings here of his later more scientific/futuristic " Things to Come' 1936.
The plot maybe silly but the special effects were all done years BEFORE CGI, it was incredible work years ahead of its time. And the great Bela Lugosi as the villain can not be topped..
Started watching just to see how they had depicted my motherland and wasnt expecting a great deal, turned out to be a decent flick. The first sound movie had already been made in India by the time this released.
I must agree with what Irene D. has stated...The picture Quality of this film is beyond reproach. 😍 I don't know how you did it or where you found this film. But you have earned a subscriber. I will be sure to check out your other videos. Thank you so much for sharing these lost treasures. 💗 I'm old enough to appreciate these films from a bygone era. I much rather watch these films, then any of the drivel Hollywood calls entertainment, which is produced now-a-days.
So, this is wild: I read on IMDB that the crystal ball at 5:26 is the same prop that appears as the Wicked Witch of The West's crystal ball in the Wizard of Oz. When the two actors here are speaking, it's obviously a smaller ball, but the close-up looks just like W of Oz. And the actor says, "Dorothy, my sister!"
A most excellent & fiendishly compelling yarn. It reminds me of someone - me ! 🤓🦹♂️🧟♀️ I need that laboratory equipment for my own mischievous mechanisations ! 😜☠️
A Fabulous film photographed by the wonderful James Wong Howe, along with the lavish imaginative dreamy production of William Cameron Menzies with a strong story was a true delight to watch! Throw in Bela Lugosi as the antagonist you got yourself a humdinger of a movie.
Wow, this one looks in good quality. Thank you for uploading. I just uploaded my Bela Lugosi birthday anniversary video which will premiere on Oct. 20th. Last year I wrote a page at my blog for Bela's Day, hope to do the same this year, will see. Join us, Bela fans! XD
@@jillczarnyszewicz7494 Thanks, Jill! I decided to withdraw my The Black Cat conclusion of my music video I shared a year ago, which I had planned on posting at my blog since YT doesn't allow it here, but I don't know. Maybe I'll upload it at my blog: grateful people like you make it all worthwhile. It's the entitled $%@%# who spend their geriatric years talking smack about Bela whom I can't stand and don't deserve to see it.
The mystic life ..many are called..few are chosen..This would be a fun series to resurrect..for the right person..and to have Chandu nicely underplayed like Edmund Lowe..

Thanks Anna! I'm so glad you appreciated the film and I hope you enjoy anything else you find on my channel!
@@@jillczarnyszewicz7494 great job. So weird to see lugosi as someone besides chandu. Had only seen serial.

That's amazing! I'd never heard that piece of prop history before!
Great piece of history. Thanks so much. 👍👍
The picture quality is absolutely nuts
That was fun. Thank you

At 18:06. Interesting that Chandu was using the Jedi mind trick so long before Obi-Wan. Or was Obi-Wan using the Chandu mind trick?

It Was Lots Of Fun!! I Had A Great Time 😂
Dr Strange
Dr. Strange creator Steve Ditko surely must have seen this movie in his youth!
@@wtk6069 Dr Strange's character folded from Chandu the magician.
Stan Lee confirms the radio show was the inspiration.

I was disappointed at the lack of main titles. Is there a reason for this, a copyright issue or something?
Hi Otis! Not sure what you mean, the main titles appear at around 00:20 and seem to be playing fine on my end.
This is classic. I came here to see how Americans pronounced Chandu!! 😅
Greek subtitles why not?😢
Nice movie. Can’t help but wonder if …. Bela Lugosi dies in all of his movies.
Thanks!! Up until now I only saw the final scenes (No Spoilers)
Did the Fliechers reinterpret that in a Superman cartoon?
Chanduwan Kenobi
42:06 say.. That's Tommy Chong!
Dr strange variants
This is pretty spectacular, but would have been better if Chandu's family and friends weren't a bunch of completely useless idiots!
