Fantastic fishing. I'm surprised they haven't been nick named the pharaoh fish with all that stunning gold. I do love a good rudd, and those displayed here really are beauties. Nice one Paul. Hurry up with part 2.

Thanks Graham, they really are stunning. The pictures never really do the colours and the sheen justice.

I’m the opposite Paul. Used to catch big rudd growing up but haven’t caught a decent one for a few years. Lovely fish.

Hi Wayne, thanks mate. Yep, they are pretty rare, always have been I guess for most. Shame as I think they are a bit neglected. Tight lines! Paul

Big rudd are literally like gold dust, they're so rare and so hard to track down. I lost a big 2 pounder at the net a good number of years ago and it still haunts me particularly as the lake took a massive dip in form in the following seasons. If only I'd managed to slip the net under it I could have ticked that rather elusive specimen off my list and forgotten about it until the opportunity crossed my path again rather than constantly bugging me like a mosquito bite that I can't find let alone scratch. I've heard rumours of a coastal ley that might contain some gems but it's about 2hrs away and I've got no idea whether it's even accessible let alone fishable, sooner or later I'm going to have to have a peak.

They don’t last forever, especially if there are Roach present. I think you could summarise my Rudd fishing as opportunities taken and missed. They don’t come along that often and have rarely lasted very long. Best wishes, Paul

We don’t fish the Shannon know, we fish the Erne system and very rarely see a Rudd let alone big ones .....if I remember John Wilson did a video around that area many years ago fishing of a long weir catching big Rudd 👍

Meelick lough that’s where we fished , found the video of John Wilson fishing the Shannon then at the end of the video fishing the weir near meelick lough .....maybe worth some enquires.....👍

I am getting ready for a proper rudd campaign this year. Found an unfished lake with some big fish. Luckily it hasn't been taken over by roach like a lot of our irish waters. It's a boat only job so got an inflatable arriving next week. Got a wee leccie engine this week. Float rod is ready. Fingers crossed I manage one or two of them.

Fantastic! That sounds really exciting Ben. I remember reading about the Irish limestone lakes and the incredible Rudd fishing. What ever happened to them?
Good luck with the fishing, always lovely to be out in the boat. Tight lines! Paul

@@drpaulgarner yeah a lot of the famous ones around tulsk that terry lampard wrote about in his book have been infested with roach so a lot of hybridisation but still hold some big rudd I suspect. Problem is trying to find isolated ones not connected by drains and rivers that haven't seen roach introductions. Tenching at moment on one such lake but never seen any really big rudd unfortunately. If I could even crack 2lb this year I would be delighted. But lovely just to be out all same in solitude. Some of these lakes never see another angler

    Just magical paul
Used to fish for them myself 20 or so years ago in Ireland, north and south, its very hard to find
a fishery now with good rudd in them, lots with stunted stock no decent quality amongst them, maybe 6oz average.
Once upon a time, good tench waters always had quality rudd in them, the bream with rudd and hard fighting hybrids,
Still not to many places unfortunately, still enjoyed your video looking forward to vid 2, keep it lit.👍

Thanks for the comment Stephen. Stunting seems to be a big problem on many lakes. Same with Roach really. It would be interesting to see if a bit of stock management by thinning them out would work - often does the trick with Roach. Cheers, Paul

There are some cracking rudd in Broome pits near Bungay, Norfolk. I have had a few around the pound mark on tench gear.
I reckon if someone actually targeted them they would have some real monsters.

Good stuff. Been more than twenty years since I've visited the pits at Broome. They used to contain some lovely tench and big perch. Tight lines! Paul
