    It's more than just goaltending though. Our blueline keeps getting younger and younger with each injury. Hockey is highly based on chemistry and when you have new people in and out of the lineup for more than half the season you're not going to run on optimal performance. Give Daws a chance, maybe go for Saros if we are weak in development of goalies, but don't give up could-be core players for a decade down the line (Mercer) for a 34 year old goalie who might or might not be a difference maker or stay long in NJ considering all the injuries the Devils have gone through this year.

      They cant overpay for Marky or saros, if they do its a bad look on Fitzy. Goalies never get huge hauls. Like you said its more than the Goalie. They need a LD vet who can be on the PP cuz Hughes isnt it rn and the PP has been exposed cuz they refuse to quick pass it around, they lack size as well. Fitzy is too blame dude did nothing all offseason and watch all those FA goalie get signed and now they are having good years, Stolarz,lyon,Broissit and others. In the end im just tired of all this goalie talk for NJ, just stfu about it and tell us when a trade actually happens.

    We're never gonna get anywhere until we get good, reliable goaltending. Once we have that our skill players can start to turn it on more, with confidence, for once!

    They don't need a trade. Markstrom would be too expensive, from the sound of it. No way I'm giving up Mercer or Holtz. I have exactly zero interest in those other goalies. Seriously, Jake Allen? Let Carolina take him.
    As of tonight Daws just won back to back games. For Hradek to talk about Daws like we know exactly what we have is stupid. Comparing Markstrom to Patrick Mahomes is pants-on-head stupid. NJ is getting healthy and playing well since the break. Play the young goalies like they've been playing the young defensemen. See what happens.

      I have been screaming this exact thing. Don't let last years 2nd round birth push the team into spending vital money and vital pieces on a goalie who's going to be _marginally_ better behind this rookie and injured defense. Hamilton is out, Siegs is out, and losing Severson and Graves (who I loved) hurt.

      @@michaelmcmahan2101 Not my "ideal," no. It's the best route for the place they're in. Not a great place... but also not without some real hope. I acknowledge their GA and team save% have been bad. I just don't see Markstrom taking us from OLI straight to Cup contender, and therefore patience is a better route. They're getting healthy and they're a different team with Jack and Hischier in the lineup.

    I've seen enough of Saros for Fitz to make a move for him. Markstrom is having a great year, but how many seasons could the Devils realistically expect to get out of a 34 year old goalie? We've been down this road with Schneider & Bernier. Mortgaging off the future for an aging goalie doesn't make good business sense.

    • @rainsilent
      @rainsilent 8 месяцев назад +2

      In all fairness Schneider was one of the best goalies in the NHL for 3 years before a series of hip injuries did him in. Had he not gotten those injuries I'm pretty sure he would have lasted a number of years longer as an outstanding goalie. Heck, he might still be playing at a high level and the Devils might not have the team they do as a result. When he was healthy he was almost single-handedly keeping the Devils relevant. Schneider's injuries are what gave the Devils the team that they currently have because the team completely collapsed without him propping the team up.
      As for how many years on Markstrom? Getting 2 more after this would be all I would be looking for. Having Markstrom as a 2 season placeholder while either Daws or Schmid develop further into a true #1 seems to me like the idea scenario.

    • @captainmofongo584
      @captainmofongo584 8 месяцев назад +1

      @rainsilent I just don't think it's wise for 2 reasons. 1 I don't believe the Devils are currently built to go on a Stanley cup run. Once, a team like Carolina or Florida who, take away the middle of the ice and start banging and crashing that will wear this team down. 2 what happens if Daws or Schmido are not ready in 2 years? What do we do then? I'd rather spend those assets on a goalie like Saros, Askarov, or Swayman. That way, letting go of high caliber prospects will be worth it as we would have secured a goalie for the foreseeable future.

      @@captainmofongo584 Getting Saros and trading away either Daws or Schmidt with picks and prospects makes most sense.

    • @rainsilent
      @rainsilent 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@captainmofongo584 Fair points. I agree with #1 but then again the Avs didn't look ready to make a deep playoff run in 96 before they got Roy in a trade with Montreal.
      Part of #2 isn't a valid concern because it is an, as of current, fictional scenario. Wise GMs don't worry about such things. They make decisions based on what they do know and best estimations of what is likely to happen. Both Schmid and Daws show room to get better. Granted that isn't guaranteed to actually happen but if it doesn't or not should not be a factor into this trade. This trade is about now.
      That said the other part about #2 is completely valid in that Saros would potentially provide longer term as a starter if resigned. This is why I would also prefer to go after Saros over Markstrom. I was simply trying to provide a counter argument why Markstrom being so old shouldn't be that much of a concern.
      That said I would have also gone after Gibson, Nedeljkovic or someone else in the offseason anyways. This isn't an opinion based on 20/20 hindsight of goaltending being poor this season. This is for the simple fact that I would have wanted a proven goalie going into this season and Vanacek and Schmid were still unproven #1s on what looked like a strong team heading into the season.
      Same with Ned. I didn't name him based on how well he is doing in Pitt. I named him because he proved to be really good with a strong team in front of him in Carolina. His poor play in Detroit was, by all indications, more a crisis of confidence rather than anything else. Besides, Vegas proved how invaluable goalie depth can be last year. Sign Ned to a two way deal and have him and Schmid duke it out for 1b. Send the other to the minors and recall as performance dictates. I genuinely believe that Carolina trading Ned away because they didn't want to resign him to a 3x2 deal was the worst transaction to have happened in the past 4 seasons.

      @rainsilent I get it and I'm all for the debate. We can all agree that NJ greatest need at the moment is securing a starting caliber netminder that can perform in front of what is an offensively gifted team that hasn't even hit its prime.

    The Goaltending situation hasn't changed from last season, the only thing that did substantially change this offseason is the Blue line. Also, their 2 of their key D-men, Seigenthaler and Hamilton, got hurt early in the season and haven't been back since. And thats hurt them a lot more than the Goaltending.
    Go and pay top dollar to get an elite goaltender if you want, but its a band-aid on a gapping wound.

    Getting Saros and trading away either Daws or Schmidt with picks and prospects makes most sense. Markstrom is mostly just a rental for 1-2yr, better to have Saros who will last longer atleast.
    Merzlikins is a cheaper and more unreliable version of Saros, if the Devils want to cheap out with a bigger risk they could try Merzlikins also.

    This 'get a goalie' propaganda needs to stop. The Boston Bruins had Vezina caliber goaltending last season and went out in the first round. So did the Islanders and the Rangers and Tampa. You know who didn't have a Vezina caliber goaltender? The Vegas Golden Knights! So what really wins games is teams, not just goalies, you can still lose with the best goalie on the planet! There's no point in wasting assets and losing good players for a goalie. Especially when that goalie gets injured and leaves you worse off than when you started.

    • @bted

      Agreed 100%. There was no real discussion of their injury problems, as if goaltending was the ENTIRE problem with this season, and no discussion of what NJ would have to give up in a goalie trade. These guys sound like the average fan calling in to sports radio.

      @@yoholmes273 To say he "blew it" with 30 games left in the season is silly, by itself. Not that they're in a great spot, but jeez. If you were calling for a better goalie at the start of the year, coming off Schmid's win vs the Rangers and Vanecek's overachieving regular season, then that was great foresight by you. But I don't think you were. I just don't want Markstrom. Maybe you could convince me Saros would be a good fit but I get the feeling some of their problems may be about to solve themselves.

    Devils are NOT winning a cup with a defense core of Dougie, Marino, Seigs, Nemec, Bahl, and Luke. With time the rookies will be fine. But they lack a shutdown defenseman or even two. They lack physical gritty forwards needed for the playoffs. Way more pieces than just a better goalie to make this team a cup contender. Fitz, so far, messed up with Meier. Who he replaces Dougie and Palat with down the road will be key to their success.
