That’s another think I had a problem with this movie: Belle and Beast’s “relationship.” It’s like he doesn’t want the spell broken from how much he’s not spending time with her from the beginning. In the original, he’s giving her a room and tells her she’s free to go anywhere. In this one, it’s the staff that does it. Beast just locks her in the dungeon and keeps her there. Then he refuses her dinner (at first.) I’m like, dude, do you want the spell broken or not?!?! He’s not making any attempt and it’s freaking annoying. How am I supposed to believe he wants the spell broken if he’s not putting in any effort unless forced to be his staff? In the original, we saw a bit of his remorse as Belle was crying in the dungeon, THEN he gives her a room.
How do people like this movie is beyond me 🤦🏾‍♀️

And remember when she refuses to dinner with him , that's when he asked his mirror to show her and felts upset for being a monster 🥺 (a very painful line for me to watch ) . There's so many scenes in the animated one that showed how desperate and hopeless the Beast was , but in the 2017 crap he wasn't and he was a complete jerk and *clasista* (yeah ,now he complains she was a thief's daughter 😅😅😅)

God, Disney is just so punchable nowadays with their Nickcom-like tween sitcoms that couldn’t survive without douchebag boyfriends (Cody Martin in The Suite Life on Deck, Mason Greyback in Wizards of Waverly Place, Jake Ryan (or so Hannah Montana… aka Miley Stewart and the rest of the cast would think) in Hannah Montana, Diggy & Holden in Liv & Maddie, etc), live-action remakes and finishing off Blue Sky!

You're right about how bringing up Belle's mother in the movie was pointless. I haven't seen Moana so I can't complain. There was one Disney movie involving the princess's mother that was done right, and that movie is Brave.

You said the library scene was like in the original , but it IS NOT (I would like to think you said that for time issues ). The library scene in this crap ruined everything done right in the original . In the 1991 version , the Beast was begining to fall for Belle and decided to give her something she loves ....but in the 2017 crap he was just showing off his book collection, it was just an afterthought. It's incredible how a live action movie is less charismatic and soulless than an animated one 🥺

It's a shame they didn't make a movie version of the Broadway play. Never saw the play but have the soundtrack. Susan Egan as Belle is great. It had more songs, and probably more scenes to make it longer for a play version. But maybe that would have been better. would be telling beauty and the beast in a way some like me may not have seen. but this just feels like a redo instead of a remake, aside from a few scenes. It just feels like wasted potential.

  • @Samaru163

There is so much more to be said about why this movie sucks. Gaston would be a big one for me: at first I was interested in the new take on his character by making him a patriotic soldier instead of just a hunter. It added a few nice touches to the film, such as Lefou trying to calm down Gaston by reminding him of "the war." However, this is ruined by the film's complete dependency on being a shot for shot remake of the original. They keep bringing up the fact that Gaston is a hunter, but the movie never shows us that he is a hunter. It shows us that he is a soldier by the way he dresses and how he can handle a blade and pistol, but he never shoots a wild animal (like he did in the original), and his trophies in the tavern are just a few scrawny deer heads, not the massive wall of deer, bear, boar, and other large game like in the original. By trying to tie itself back to the original movie, this one ruined what could have been a cool take on the character.

    • @ingridsuperfreak
      @ingridsuperfreak 3 года назад +2

I disagree, making Gaston a patriotic soldier instead of a hunter was a way to justify his actions, he was just a bully , a basic man from a basic town , he is beloved in his town because he is a hunter and meets all the good qualities of a chovinist man

Either way the animated one was slightly better as we see him bullsey a bird with a musket (muskets were not very accurate from what I rememver in history) and we see his cartoonishly impressive physical abilities. Spitting holes from a belt through a barrel, lifting the blonde triplets effortlessly, and eating a dozen eggs whole with le fool comically failing at the same thing. That's one thing I love about animation: you can go above and beyond with exaderation or showcasing. Mr. Enter talks about this in his review of reanimated, a live action 2d animation hybrid movie

Yeah, I sat through this movie on my own free will, considering that the 1991 film, while not my #1 favorite Disney film (that would go to 1973's "Robin Hood"), it is my favorite film from the Disney renaissance. The 2017 film is simply an empty husk of a movie compared to the original. As you said, it had no heart or soul, and I would argue it was simply made just for a cash grab.

The original Beauty and the Beast is not only my favourite disney movie, but in my top 3 movies of all time. It's one of those rare pieces of media that I consider perfect, so you can imagine how pissed this remake made me.
Emma Watson can be a good actor, but in this not only is she bland as tofu, but I don't see Belle I just see Emma Watson. The dress in the movie is just terrible looking, it looks like a 2 euro prom dress, the beast and belle have no chemistry, the LGBT represention is just used to stroke disney's ego. The only thing I actually like about the movie is the song Evermore.
But yeah I absolutely hate his movie, it fails as a remake of the original and on its own

Another thing, one of the best thing about Belle and the prince's relationship is that it took more than a day for the two to fall in love.

This movie was garbage. I hated Emma-soulless-Watson playing Belle. Belle is my absolute favorite princess, and they made her so boring and soulless in this movie.
Honestly, Watson doesn’t even look like Belle. Back then, when animated Disney would base their characters off real people’s faces, why couldn’t they do the same thing here and find someone that at least tried to match animated Belle’s face? I know I’m being picky, but Emma Watson is so freaking expressionless and emotionless with her bland face that I think they should have found someone else to play Belle. Even if someone was given a bad script, they can still at least put in an effort to act, and Emma Watson doesn’t seem to be putting in any effort at all, and that makes me unbelievably mad and insulted.
Screw this movie and everyone in it. It’s garbage.

Paige O'Hara was a Broadway actress, it's noticeable how she even "smiled" while she was singing. Emma just acted in Harry Potter and that's it (at least as an important role). I also hated Watson's performance and the zero chemistry between her and the CGI Beast....and maybe that ruined all the movie , because the film was about the romance.between them, but here it's just filler and plot twists thst doesn't go anywhere

About the name of the town: I watched the remake with subtitles on the other day and at one point Gaston does refer to the town as “Villeneuve” which I’m guessing is a reference to the author of the original Beauty and the Beast tale, Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve. I couldn’t find mention of the town’s name in the original movie, but it’s there in the remake at least

I would describe Emma Watson in this as “flat”.
    Her singing? Flat.
    Her acting? Flat.
Her character despite the source? Flat.
I’m a potterhead from way back when- so DUH I love her acting skills. But here? She just didn’t click. At all. It felt as if she was literally just line reading the script the whole time without putting forth attempts at characterization. She also was way to recognizable for the roll… I kept only seeing Hermione.
Gaston…. Good lord Gaston. Missed opportunities abounded to the point I nearly cried.
Honestly. It’s watchable to be fair…. But yeah. Just like the lion king remake, I came back from the theater, popped in the VHS and realigned my respect.

I agree that the enchantress is WORST than in the original. At least, she asked if she could stay and offers a rose; she didn't said her name or where she comes from but the lady asked nicely. Here, she enters in the castle and ruin the party AS WELL as casting a spell on innocent peoples. The magician also DIDN'T help Maurice when the villagers attacks him or when Gaston brings the old man in the forest; she didn't explained why she found him in the forest even if if she could. Guess letting him being beated by others was more important! In short, this character is a horrible person and i hate her XS
Belle's mother and the magic books made NO SENSE! First, learning that her parent died brought nothing interresting and didn't make Belle more charming or sensible. It didn't developped her feelings for the Beast either. A complete waiste of time! Second, if the magic book can teleport you ANYWHERE in the world; the Beast shouldn't be that sad since he can explore the world. His loneliness is reduce BECAUSE of this magic book. Thoses elements were so dumb, i face-palmed myself when i saw them. I only wathc this movie one time and it's enough, i won't do it again!
Lefou is CLEARLY in love with Gaston but decide to go with a random guy? I mean, he danced with him at the end and is suddenly in love with that man? He barely knows him and have more chemistry with Gaston; they should be a couple! Guess Disney is ashamed of showing gay characters in their remakes :S

Interesting fact: The Beast in this movie was originally going to be a guy in practical make up. But then, Disney decided to make it in motion capture. Basically, they pulled a 2011's The Thing prequel.
Let me explain. When the prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing was being made, the film crew originally wanted to rely heavily on practical effects, to keep in touch with what made the first movie so visually stunning. There's even a video on what the film would have looked like with those effects, and they look like the film studio put a lot of effort into making them. In fact, some of them look incredible! But then, Universal decided to switch it up and make them CGI! That is basically what Disney did years later. Let that sink in.

Y'know, I'm still trying to figure what was wrong with B&TB's (Beauty and the Beast) original ending, so much so that we need to have the Enchantress undo the punishment she put on Beast in the first place... I mean, even if you used the flimsy, "But... m-muh progressiveness scene!" argument, I can counter that quickly: you can still put it in there with the original ending, even if the only purpose of it is to kiss the asses of the LGBTs, which is quite condescending to them. Even Sir Ian thought that scene was garbage, according to what I've read. I thought the whole point of it was to teach Beast a lesson?

If the enchantress was just going to fix everything in the end, then what was the point of the rose? There is a time limit. Magic spells (of at least, spells in Beauty and the Beast) have time limits before they become permanent. Belle needed to be the one to break the spell, not the enchantress! That was the task and this movie completely ignored that, making the rose, the spell, and the lesson completely pointless.
Even though I hate the Maleficent movie with all my heart, at least it was established that curses and spells cannot be broken if you just change your mind. Something has to be done within the time limit to break the curse or spell. Maleficent changed her mind about Aurora and tried to lift the curse, but it didn’t work until what needed to be done was done.

Correct me if I'm wrong (three years late) but the prince was supposed to have been a beast for like ten years before his 21st year where the spell would become permanent. That would make him 11 or so when he was first cursed. Ignoring the fact that the enchantress clearly has no idea how children work in either version, either they aged up the prince significantly, made the prologue start way later than it happened in the original, or both the prince and belle are significantly older than their animated counterparts. None of those options make sense and one of them makes me very uncomfortable

    Here’s a little story for y’all!
Once upon a time, I was actually excited for this movie. I was happy to hear Emma Watson was gonna be Belle, that there would be a bit of extra backstory. Because Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie ever, and it always will be.
When I finally saw the movie, I did actually like it a bit. Shocker, I know. The costumes were good, I loved the castle’s design, and I did like the new songs, particularly How Does a Moment Last Forever and all its reprises. Did the movie have issues, well yeah. Even I saw that Auto-tuning Emma was such a bad idea and that they should had just hired another person to dub her singing. But I overall had a good time…at first.
But then I sat down and really thought about it. Then I watched many RUclips reviews on the movie and how they bashed it over and over again for its flaws, and I thought some more. Then I got the movie in Blu-ray, and watched it again with those new thoughts, both my own new thoughts and the opinions of others, swirling in my head.
And much like how the enchantress’s spell forced the beast’s true inner ugliness to the surface, so too did the live action movie do the same for my poor eyes.
I realized how much of a let-down this movie was and how more and more, I retroactively began to hate it. I felt betrayed as a die-hard fan of both the original movie and the original fairytale.
And even now, every time I think of this movie, I hate it more and more.
This film made me re-appreciate the original all the more and seek out other versions to fill the void the live action one left in my soul. Ones like the comic by Megan Kearney, where the story is so much more fleshed out and both Beauty and her Beast have actual time to develop their chemistry, all while establishing interesting rules for magic and how it can sometimes be it’s own horrifying entity if it were at least partially sentient.
Those made me feel better while the live action one made me now feel despair.
What a wasted opportunity to give new beautiful life to the tale as old as time, that ultimately ended with it becoming the very beast I was hoping it wouldn’t be.

For me the part with 'Why did the stuff get curse too' my thoughts for the original is that they were cures because A. To show the Beast that his bad actions of when he was a child will hurt other people around him and B. To show us the audience that at the time he was cures this is how he sees them. He didn't see them as people he just sees them as the item of their job.

A growing lion could survive solely on bugs until adulthood, which would be approximately 2 years if Simba is a few months old. There is a video on Film Theory about this and it was determined that Simba could've lived off of termites for that time with the downside that his teeth would be extremely weak since they wouldn't be strengthened by a lion's natural diet of antelope and zebra.

I have yet to see Shape of Water, so I can't say. I honestly am just not a fan of these live-action Disney remakes. God knows what Dumbo, Aladdin, and Lion King will be like in 2019. Although I am curious about the Christopher Robin movie that will be coming out this year.
Since you brought up Your Name, what are your thoughts on J.J. Abrams making a live-action adaptation of that film---cause honestly I'm not quite for it.

This may be a late reply but when you say you're least favorite Disney animated film I'm just going to take a guess and say it's either Home on the Range or Chicken Little---at least those two are my least favorites.

Same here with the original. Beauty & the Beast WAS my childhood. I taught myself to read at age 3 because Belle loved reading (and I was bored). When the tape player ate my first VHS copy, you'd have thought my mother died. My g-ma made me a homemade version of the yellow dress and I refused to go to my first day of kindergarten if I couldn't wear it. As an adult, I got to see Paige O'Hara sing live, and I immediately was moved to tears. She's still got it 100%, by the way.
The remake was the first flick I ever walked out of in the theater. Emma Watson lost all my respect as an actor because IDK if she thinks she tried or whatever, but she outright BUTCHERED my Belle, taking away all her personality, quirks, and warmth in order to make her just another #GurlBoss on the pile. The Beast looks like someone botched their first furry cosplay. FFS THE ENCHANTED OBJECTS SHOULD NOT BE HARD TO LOOK AT. I left at the magic transportation book scene because I had better things to do than listen to a non-singer and a CGI buffalo furry duet for five minutes about Belle's dead mother.

The Beast's singing voice in this film sounds like Ralph Fiennes, who is actually a great singer, much better than Emma Watson.

It is possible for a lion to eat off bugs since they are protien. And not only are there about 1.5 billion bugs per person, but africa has a wide array of bugs. Plus the thing about ariel writing confuses me bc ink doesnt work under water and neither does paper yet she signs her name perfectly on the magic contract, but at the same time if she can then ya she could explain it was her, buuuuuut then again eric may not believe a mute woman coulda been the siren he saw. Plus the myserious girl also saved him aside from sounding great so it's not that shallow. Then again any relarionship with beautiful partners can be considered shallow to some degree. I dunno, I'm no love expert 😅

Fun fact Luke Evans is Gay in real life along with Ian McKellan. Yeah the gay scene was 2 seconds like what?!? Also there was a scene with Stanley wearing a dress and smiling.
Overall I still think it's a brilliant film but that's just my personal opinion.

I really don´t get why they introduced the mother? Why she´s gone? Well, she died. Either from childbirth or sickness, that´s literally it. But no, they wanted to introduce the mother to I guess add some sort of conflict between Belle and Maurice? Idk they literellay failed. But okay let´s see we introduce the mother to add some conflict, that´s how I would do it. Warning: long comment.
Conflict: Belles mother died when she was really young from some sort of sickness. We learn that the mother was an excellent painter, like really really skilled. But for one of two reasons she didn´t made it. 1) Sexism: Bc her male "coworkers" (the male painters) were treated much better and the mother was much more criticised for her art compared to the male painters. Or 2) class issues. Bc the mother was part of middle or maybe even lower class she didn´t had access to the same materials as he upper class (both female and male painters) and she again was much more criticised than the painters from upper class. In both cases she never really made it, got strongly and unfairly criticised and died without fullfilling her dream of becoming a great painter. Belle is not only an extremely dreamy bookworm but alos an artist. But unlike her mother she is not a painter but instead a writer. She loves to read for entertainment, loves to read for inspiration and loves to write her own fictional stories or poems. Her father Maurice of course loves her and encourages her in her hobby but when it´s about actually writing a book and publishing it he is not really supportive and kind of "crushes" her dreams. He doesn´t do this out of spite or jealousy buit bc he saw what happened to his wife, Belles mother, and how she suffered bc of it and he doesn´t want the same to happen to his daughter, despite her skills.
Romance: Not only does Belle feel like an outcast bc she loves to read and no one seems to understand her and share her hobby (she basically is a medieval version of a gaming kid being at home all day only gaming and not going out with friends) but additionally she feels insecure about her dreams of being a writer. Neither the library nor the small printery are interested in her work and even her father, although she knows he loves her, seems to not support her want to publish sth. Maybe she even fights with writers block, symbolising even more how she feels trapped in this boring small villlage. In the castle the Beast gives her the big library as a present. We see her reading as often as possible, Belle teaches the Beast how to read again and they have reading dates where either one of them reads to the other one. One day Belle wants to write sth again but again, writers block. The Beast catches her by surprise and asks what she´s doing. Belle admits she just doesn´t know what to write and sth along the line of "It just seems to be impossible to find a good idea" and the Beast makes some sort of joke like "you´re in an enchanted castle with speaking furniture. Everything is possible". Later in the movie the two of them have a reading date again and this time Beasts asks her how it is going with the story, Belle says shes finished and actually has them with her and Beast asks her politely if he could read it. After he read it he praises it bu also criticises sth, ofc polite and honest and not rude or overdramatic. Belle is surprised by his honesty but actually sees it and is like "you´re actually right. Thank you very much" and thats how they bond over it.

I don't see too significant of a difference in time. It sucks you had your hard work copyrighted, but when you're on a site like RUclips that doesn't give a shit about fair use and relies on an automatic process to do the work... shit like that happens.

Ain't the only reason people think it's good is because of the new songs and yeah they're pretty okay I like them and he added some extra stuff that either didn't need to be there or it's fine I guess unfortunately acting it sucks and it's barely any chemistry between these guys and some stuff that they do add ruins and often hinders the film

Apparently, Bill Condon said that he couldn't understand why LeFou followed Gaston around so he figured, "It must be because Lefou is in love with Gaston!" Really? One dude can't idolize another unless he wants to bang him? Even as a kid, I never jumped to that conclusion, nor did the original hint that possibility. I always figured that LeFou was one of those pathetic hanger-ons that jumped onto a popular bandwagon in the hopes of being popular by proxy. He sucked up to Gaston because he thought he was cool and wanted to be cool too. He was Gaston's biggest fanboy, which helped add to the notion that Gaston was the town hero. They tried to add a touch of tragedy and sympathy to someone whose name literally translates to "the fool" or "the clown". You know, someone that isn't meant to be taken seriously. This is just one in a myriad of examples of corporate queerbaiting in order to make said corporation look progressive and make them billions of dollars...which worked, of course. That being said, I did like Josh Gad as LeFou. You can tell he's trying and is having fun with the role. This is funny because I normally find him extremely irritating; just look at Olaf or any role of his in general.

I'm so dissapointed at Disney! Instead of making original movies; Raya is ok but they were a few dumb things in it like Sisu's humor and constant talking about trust which was annoying or the kung fu baby which wasn't cute or funny XS Oh and the farting bugs, THAT was lame! The action, music and animation are good but the rest was a mess! Also, Sisu's design looks more like a dragon from MLP than a REAL dragon. Haku from Spirited away is more unique and cool than her, his personality AND his dragon form. This blue creature got NOTHING unique or special.
My point is; their next remakes sounds so stupid! Pinocchio, Bambi, the Aristochats, Robin Hood. What can you add in them except making Edgar the butler less ridiculous or developping more Robin and Marianne's romance? Nothing! Theses movies are fine, no need to ruin them with dumb changes like you did for Beauty and the beast, Maleficent, Lion King and Alice in Underland X( Leave them alone Disney!
Also, they wanted to remake Hercules. IF they respect more mythology and made Zeus a jerk, Hades nice and his wife Percephone; i would give it a chance! If Phill the satyre and Pegasus are not there, Meg is a damzel in distress instead of a sassy and kind women and Hades isn't funny; i won't watch it. I'm sure there will be dumb changes like in beauty and the Beast... or like in the upcoming little mermaid movie where, i'm not kidding, the producers puts Athena. HER MOTHER is in te movie even if she died when Ariel was five. That makes no sense! How can Triton revive his wife? He doesn't have this power, same for Ursula. How can Athena be ALIVE when she died years ago? This is so stupid!
